It was originally<br \/>\nintended for an academic essay collection, but the project was eventually<br \/>\ncancelled, and it never saw print. I subsequently made an illustrated PDF<br \/>\nversion of this essay available on my <a href=\"https:\/\/drkevinpatrick.academia.edu\/\">Academia page<\/a>, but this was only available to<br \/>\nAcademia.edu subscribers. Chief amongst these was<i>&nbsp;The Comic<br \/>\nAustralian<\/i>&nbsp;(1911-1913), the first magazine to print coloured comic<br \/>\nstrips illustrated by Australian artists. Oddly enough, it was the poet <a href=\"https:\/\/adb.anu.edu.au\/biography\/mccrae-hugh-raymond-7327\">Hugh McCrae (1876-1958)<\/a>, who drew a<br \/>\npioneering series of comic strips for the magazine, featuring a bushland<br \/>\nretinue of kangaroos and koalas, which made the then-innovative use of speech<br \/>\nballoons enclosed within formally separated panels&nbsp;<b>(Figure 1)&nbsp;<span style=\"color: red\">(Note #1)<\/span>.<\/b>&nbsp;The adoption of Australia\u2019s exotic<br \/>\nfauna as anthropomorphic characters would become a recurring motif in<br \/>\nAustralian comics from this period onwards.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">The growth of Australia\u2019s suburbs throughout the<br \/>\n1920s, serviced by public transport networks, created a new commuter audience<br \/>\nfor newspapers and periodicals&nbsp;<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit\"><span style=\"color: red\">(Note #2)<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">.&nbsp;Newspapers<br \/>\nbecame a more visual medium, subscribing to what historian K.S. Inglis called<br \/>\nthe \u2018law of increasing brightness\u2019, whereby \u2018the headlines [grew] higher \u2026the<br \/>\ndisplay advertisements more seductive \u2026 [and] the photographs larger and more<br \/>\nvivid\u2019&nbsp;<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit\"><span style=\"color: red\">(Note #3)<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">.&nbsp;Comic strips<br \/>\nstood poised to become a vital component in newspapers\u2019 growing emphasis on<br \/>\ngraphic design and layout, yet some Australian newspapers were slow to embrace<br \/>\nthe medium. Sydney\u2019s&nbsp;<\/span><i style=\"font-family: inherit\">Sunday Times<\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">, a self-styled \u201cfamily<br \/>\nnewspaper\u201d, published Australia\u2019s first comic-strip supplement for children on<br \/>\n14 August 1921&nbsp;<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit\"><span style=\"color: red\">(Note #4)<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">.&nbsp;The<br \/>\naustere and conservative S<\/span><i style=\"font-family: inherit\">ydney Morning Herald<\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">, however, steadfastly<br \/>\nrefused to print any comic strips until 1945, when it published C.S. Cross responded with&nbsp;<i>You &amp; Me<\/i>,<br \/>\nwhich became Australia\u2019s first weekly newspaper comic strip upon its debut in<br \/>\nAugust 1920&nbsp;<b>(Fig.2)<\/b>. The series focused on the portly Mr Pott and<br \/>\nhis lanky mate, \u201cWhalesteeth\u201d, whose barroom bonhomie frequently degenerated<br \/>\ninto violent arguments over politics, religion, and other topical issues. Ginger Meggs was a minor character<br \/>\nin&nbsp;<i>Us Fellers<\/i>, created by <a href=\"https:\/\/adb.anu.edu.au\/biography\/bancks-james-charles-jim-5119\">James Bancks (1889-1952)<\/a> for<br \/>\nSydney\u2019s&nbsp;<i>Sunday Sun<\/i>&nbsp;in November 1921. Meggs, who shirked<br \/>\nhomework in favour of racing billycarts and getting into fights, gradually<br \/>\nbecame the leading character.&nbsp;<i>Us Fellers<\/i>&nbsp;(subsequently<br \/>\nrenamed&nbsp;<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gingermeggs.com\/\">Ginger Meggs<\/a><\/i>) captured the everyday argot of Australian<br \/>\nchildren, but its successful placement with newspapers in Britain, Europe, and<br \/>\nthe United States during the 1920s suggested that the series\u2019 appeal was<br \/>\nuniversal&nbsp;<b>(Fig.3)<\/b>. Ginger Meggs became the undisputed star of<br \/>\nAustralian comics, appearing in the annual&nbsp;<i>Sunbeams Book<\/i>&nbsp;series<br \/>\n(1924-1951), and on cinema screens in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fHN06L_uAoU\"><i>Those Terrible Twins<\/i>&nbsp;(1925)<\/a>&nbsp;<b><span style=\"color: red\">(Note #7)<\/span><\/b>.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">In 1927, the&nbsp;<i>Auckland<br \/>\nStar<\/i>&nbsp;published one of New Zealand\u2019s first comic strips,&nbsp;<i>The<br \/>\nTee Wees\u2019 Adventures<\/i>, a charming \u201cbush fairy\u201d serial by D.
