Louder than Hunger<\/em> just came out from Candlewick. Would you please tell readers a bit about the story?<\/strong><\/p>\n John Schu: Thank you to MG Book Village for supporting libraries and librarians!<\/p>\n Thank you for supporting readers!<\/p>\n Louder Than Hunger<\/strong><\/em> tells Jake\u2019s story.<\/p>\n Jake volunteers at Tinley Terrace, a nursing home near his house.<\/p>\n He loves books.<\/p>\n He loves musicals and movies.<\/p>\n He avoids people his own age.<\/p>\n He avoids mirrors and food.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a very loud voice inside his head that tells him he\u2019s unworthy of taking up space. That he\u2019s unworthy of a happy life.<\/p>\n Eventually, Jake\u2019s hospitalized at Whispering Pines for anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and depression.<\/p>\n Jake\u2019s story is based on my experiences and emotions while living in multiple residential treatment facilities as a teen.<\/p>\n Anne: It\u2019s a heart-wrenching story. I like the way your summary mirrors the pages of the book\u2014more white space than text. Sometimes the shape of the words themselves gave me the sensation of falling, kind of like the downward spiral Jake was in. It\u2019s an effective way to tell Jake\u2019s story! What made you decide to write Louder than Hunger<\/em> as a verse novel?<\/strong><\/p>\n John Schu: The shape of the words gave you the sensation of falling\u2014wow! That makes my heart happy. That was my intention.<\/p>\n I always knew Louder Than Hunger<\/strong><\/em> needed to be told in verse. The white space in the margins comforted me. It helped me dig deeper. It helped me feel more comfortable with the level of vulnerability it took to tell this very personal story. I hope it helps readers more easily digest Jake\u2019s story, too.<\/p>\n Anne: Yes, I think it will. You open with the dedication, \u201cfor thirteen year-old me, who needed a book like this one,\u201d and at the end, you say, \u201cWriting Jake\u2019s story hurt and healed my heart.\u201d Ooooh, I ache for you and kids going through tough stuff, whether it\u2019s bullying, anorexia, depression, grief, or all of the above. What was the hardest scene for you to write?<\/strong><\/p>\n John Schu: Writing the dedications and the author\u2019s note were two of the most cathartic writing experiences.<\/p>\n Oh, so many of the scenes were hard to write.<\/p>\n The scene in the library.<\/p>\n The scene when his mom is screaming and yelling because Jake won\u2019t eat. She\u2019s lost. She doesn\u2019t know how to help him. She\u2019s dealing with her own depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n But you asked me which scene was the hardest<\/strong> to write . . .<\/p>\n The hardest poems to write were the ones after Jake\u2019s day pass with his mom to the Chicago Theatre. The Voice destroys what feels like it could be a turning point in Jake\u2019s treatment. As I wrote those scenes, I kept saying, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Jake! I need to hurt you again.\u201d<\/p>\n Anne: When I read those scenes, I was soooooo sad for Jake. <\/strong><\/p>\n Now, let\u2019s talk about the grandmother character. She plays a huge role in Jake\u2019s story. Was she based on your own grandmother? Tell us a bit about your grandma and your relationship with her.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n John Schu: Thank you for asking about Jake\u2019s grandma. In addition to dedicating the book to thirteen-year-old me, I write this in the dedication:<\/p>\n \u00a0For Grandma Ruth,<\/em> I was VERY <\/strong>close to my grandma. She was my best friend. She would pick me up every Friday afternoon during the school year to spend the weekend at her house. We spent almost every day together during summer break.<\/p>\n Like Jake\u2019s grandma, she loved the color red, The Golden Girls<\/em>, music, and Venture department store.<\/p>\n Like Jake\u2019s grandma, she read aloud Goofy\u2019s Big Race<\/em> hundreds of times. \u201cSlow and steady . . .\u201d<\/p>\n Like Jake\u2019s Grandma, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer when I was in middle school.<\/p>\n A cancer that destroyed her body. I miss her every day!<\/p>\n Anne: Oh, that must have been hard. I love how your grandma character kept telling Jake, \u201ctake care of my boy!\u201d I felt like I knew her.<\/strong><\/p>\n Jake has fond memories of elementary school. What about you? What year in school was your happiest?<\/strong><\/p>\n John Schu: School was complicated.<\/p>\n I felt out of place.<\/p>\n I spent a lot of time during elementary school feeling alone and on the outside looking in.<\/p>\n In The Creativity Project<\/em>, I write a letter to Dr. Mary Margaret Reed, my fifth-grade teacher.<\/p>\n I thank her for the happiest year of elementary school.<\/p>\n I thank her for being patient and understanding and kind.<\/p>\n I thank her for reading aloud to me.<\/p>\n I thank her for making me feel less alone.<\/p>\n A big thank-you to all of the Dr. Mary Margaret Reeds of the world!<\/p>\n Anne: I hope Dr. Reed reads this interview! <\/strong><\/p>\n These days, as you travel around the country visiting schools and nurturing a love of reading and libraries, what age group do you most enjoy spending time with?<\/strong><\/p>\n John Schu: I love visiting schools! I see grades 3-5 the most. I always thought it was my favorite age group, but I\u2019ve been adding more and more middle school visits to my schedule.
