Out July 10 via Dualtone Records, <em data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1020\">Lordy<\/em> marks the Indiana band\u2019s first album in five years, following 2021\u2019s <em data-start=\"1090\" data-end=\"1104\">Good for You<\/em> and a decade-plus run that\u2019s taken them from American roots rock breakout to restless sonic explorers. Produced by Brad Cook, the new record strips the band\u2019s sound back to something naked, honest, and immediate \u2013 an album about surviving, rebuilding, accepting, and stepping back into life with blood still warm in the veins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For two years, Myers struggled to finish new songs, later explaining, \u201cI was all raw emotion.\u201d He wrote much of it at home in the daylight, clear-headed and awake, strumming his Martin guitar while the sun came through the kitchen windows. It\u2019s still vague enough though. I can even feel myself being vague in trying not to answer this question. I\u2019m sorry I can\u2019t help it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2759\">That personal charge comes surging through \u201cTiger Blood,\u201d even as the song moves with a loose, almost reckless swagger. Myers traces part of its origin to returning to his high school for the first time since graduating, with the football field unexpectedly coloring the song\u2019s mood and imagery. I had recently gone back to my high school for the first time since I graduated and just being in that setting was kind of informing the song. Especially the football field for some reason. I didn\u2019t play football, by the way \u2013 but to me it\u2019s a very simple song. Not deep at all. The verses resemble a softness, calm, maybe even blissful unawareness. It\u2019s nice to be in that state until you just can\u2019t anymore. The claws come out, or you have an urge to let loose. Really the song is just about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3514\" data-end=\"4279\">The claws do come out. By the time Myers reaches the refrain \u2013 \u201c<em>Friday nights come, oh, we\u2019re made of \/ veins of ice and tiger blood<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em> \u2013 \u201cTiger Blood\u201d has become a song about pressure turning feral: Youthful heat, reckless release, the charged pull of wanting to disappear into motion for one night. Its bridge pushes that feeling into a raucous call-and-response, born from a casino memory of a man named Bucky and a desperate gambler screaming, \u201c<em>Take me back to Lex<\/em>,\u201d trying to win enough to get back to Lexington. It\u2019s absurd, vivid, human, and exactly the kind of stray life-fragment Myers knows how to turn into song \u2013 a flash of story that makes the track feel even more alive, like a barroom myth shouted over the band as the whole room starts to tilt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4281\" data-end=\"4850\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely grabbing with expression and impulse,\u201d Myers says. \u201cThe song itself is very impulsive. It needed a bridge. My friend Abby Hamilton said she could hear a call and response thing working. So I said when I say \u2018<em>take me back to Lex<\/em>,\u2019 you all say \u2018<em>Bucky<\/em>.\u2019 This story has always stuck with me: I was playing roulette in Indiana. The guy spinning the ball (dealing) had a name tag that said, Bucky. Houndmouth have always had a gift for making songs that feel lived-in and lit from within, and \u201cTiger Blood\u201d adds fresh fire to that legacy. It\u2019s ragged and radiant, catchy as hell and cut with real ache \u2013 a ferocious opening statement from a band back in motion, letting whatever needs to come out come out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4852\" data-end=\"5499\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">That\u2019s the charge running through <em>Lordy<\/em>\u2019s lead-up so far: Not a neat comeback narrative, but the sound of Houndmouth kicking the door down and bringing its full, fired-up storm into the room. At the end of the day, I like writing songs and playing them.<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"title\"><span\/><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"sub-title\"><strong>If I\u2019m not mistaken, 2026 marks Houndmouth\u2019s 15-year anniversary \u2013 can you recommend a couple deeper cuts or personal highlights from the Houndmouth catalog for <em>Atwood<\/em>\u2019s crate-digging audience to sink their teeth into?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Houndmouth<\/strong>: I wrote a song for a podcast (I believe) called <em>The Song Confessional<\/em> in 2020 called \u201cSome Paradise.\u201d They sent us a voicemail of someone telling a story about being on a boat in the middle of a huge storm. This person was basically scared for their life and recalled all of the details. In the midst of the chaos they even managed to fall in love on that boat. Anyways, we\u2019d listen to this voicemail and I\u2019d be taking notes because the point was to turn it into a song. I can even feel myself being vague in trying not to answer this question. What ultimately made it feel like the right title for the record?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Houndmouth<\/strong>: Nothing about writing this song felt unnatural. It wasn\u2019t overthought. I was just kind of pissed off and walking around with a guitar saying stuff. I usually don\u2019t write songs that fast. Like 5\/10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, to name the record I just thought about the most natural thing that came out during the process and went with that. I wrote everything except \u201c<em>come on let it out now<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>I\u2019ve been wondering where my mind went<\/em>.\u201d So, I used those lines as a starting point. I had recently gone back to my high school for the first time since I graduated and just being in that setting was kind of informing the song. Especially the football field for some reason. I didn\u2019t play football btw. But to me it\u2019s a very simple song. Not deep at all. The verses resemble a softness, calm, maybe even blissful unawareness. It\u2019s nice to be in that state until you just can\u2019t anymore. The claws come out, or you have an urge to let loose. Really the song is just about that.<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"title\"><span\/><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"sub-title\"><strong> \u201cTiger Blood\u201d feels like it\u2019s grappling with expression, impulse, and even losing your grip on your own thoughts \u2013 that sense of your mind slipping \u201c<em>between the earth and the pavement<\/em>.\u201d Where was your head at when you wrote this, and what were you trying to work through or make sense of in that moment?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Houndmouth<\/strong>: It\u2019s definitely grabbing with expression and impulse. The song itself is very impulsive. It needed a bridge. Friend Abby Hamilton said she could hear a call and response thing working. So I said when I say, \u201c<em>Take me back to lex<\/em>,\u201d you all say, \u201c<em>Bucky<\/em>.\u201d This story has always stuck with me: I was playing roulette in Indiana. The guy spinning the ball (dealing) had a name tag that said, Bucky.
