During the roughly<strong> 432-mile<\/strong> haul, wind chills plunged to <strong>\u201327\u00b0F<\/strong>. When the truck arrived, the temperature was still <strong>\u20134\u00b0F<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A USDA inspector documented the outcome:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>7 pigs died during transport<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>5 pigs were in such poor condition that they had to be put down<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>3 more pigs died shortly after being unloaded<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Several surviving pigs suffered extensive frostbite<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why This Case Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every day, workers cram pigs, chickens, turkeys, cows and others into trucks without food or water. They\u2019re jolted through weather extremes, traffic, and frightening noises. They endure blistering heat, subzero cold, dehydration, and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/smithfield-truck-accidents\/\">Trucks have crashed en route<\/a>, violently killing animals or leaving them injured and suffering for hours before responders arrive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry reports show that\u00a0<strong>more than 1 million pigs die in transport each year<\/strong>, and at least tens of thousands arrive at the slaughterhouse injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s not even the end of the misery. For the animals who <em>do<\/em> reach the slaughterhouse alive, the violence continues. Workers shoot pigs in the head and cut their throats. When stunning fails\u2014as it often does\u2014<strong>pigs can still feel it as their throats are slashed and, sometimes, even when they are dumped into tanks of scalding-hot water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Every Pig Is Someone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pigs are curious, thoughtful individuals. They dream when they sleep. They recognize their own names. They show empathy for other pigs who are distressed or joyful.
