The law came into effect at the start of this year, and imposed requirements on both app store owners like Apple and Google, and developers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any user in Texas who creates a new Apple account will need to confirm whether they are 18 years old or older. In some cases, Apple will be able to carry out this <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2026\/02\/25\/apple-age-verification-in-ios-26-4-beta-2-took-less-than-30-seconds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">verification automatically<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, developers will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2025\/10\/08\/apple-announces-new-requirements-for-apps-available-in-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">determine the age range<\/a> of app users in order to ensure compliance. <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2025\/11\/04\/app-store-texas-sb2420-new-apis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple provides tools<\/a> to help them do so.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-supreme-court-rejects-a-pause-in-enforcement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supreme Court rejects a pause in enforcement<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A trade body whose members include both Apple and Google had applied to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for enforcement of the law to be suspended while it attempted to have the law declared unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was rejected, with the Consumer and Communications Industry Association then taking the matter to the US Supreme Court. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/social-media\/supreme-court-texas-enforce-age-verification-law-mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNET<\/a><\/em> reports that the court has denied the request in a one-sentence ruling.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that Texas can, for now, continue enforcing its age verification law, which mandates app stores to verify minors\u2019 ages and secure parental consent before downloading apps or making in-app purchases.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ruling reads, in its entirety:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The application to vacate stay presented to Justice Alito and by him referred to the Court is denied.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"h-9to5mac-s-take\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">9to5Mac\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battle is unlikely to end here, with Apple and others still seeking to have the law reversed. However, it\u2019s clear which way the wind is blowing on this one in jurisdictions around the world, and we\u2019ve argued before that Apple would be better advised to accept the inevitable now and <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2025\/12\/19\/apple-age-verification-with-a-privacy-focus-would-solve-two-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">turn it into a PR win<\/a> rather than a legal defeat later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>9to5Mac<\/em> readers overwhelmingly agreed that they would trust Apple to carry out age and identity verification over individual app developers and websites doing so.
