The most successful renovations aren\u2019t always the ones that add more space. Often, they\u2019re the ones that make better use of the space that already exists.<\/p>\n

That was certainly the case with this Portland primary suite.<\/p>\n

While the original suite offered generous square footage, it lacked the functionality, storage, and flow our clients wanted for everyday living. The bathroom was small and compartmentalized, storage was limited, and the relationship between the bedroom, closet, and bath felt disconnected. The suite had character, but it wasn\u2019t working nearly as hard as it could.<\/p>\n

Rather than simply updating finishes, we reimagined the entire experience.<\/p>\n

Starting with the Floor Plan<\/h3>\n

When approaching a renovation, we always begin by asking one question: How can the home better support the way our clients live?<\/p>\n

The original layout dedicated a significant amount of space to circulation while limiting the size and functionality of the bathroom. Storage was fragmented between small closets, and the bathroom lacked both the amenities and organization expected in a modern primary suite.<\/p>\n

By redistributing square footage rather than adding onto the home, we were able to completely transform the suite\u2019s functionality.<\/p>\n

The new floor plan creates distinct zones for sleeping, dressing, bathing, and getting ready, allowing each space to serve a clear purpose while feeling connected to the whole.<\/p>\n

What was once a collection of disconnected rooms now functions as a cohesive retreat.<\/p>\n

A Spa-Inspired Bathroom with Graphic Personality<\/h3>\n

The bathroom became the centerpiece of the transformation.<\/p>\n

We expanded the footprint and reconfigured the layout to accommodate a dramatic walk-in shower with a freestanding soaking tub positioned within the enclosure. The result feels less like a traditional bathroom and more like a boutique hotel spa.<\/p>\n

Glossy black tile wraps the shower walls, creating depth and contrast while referencing the black tile details found in the original bathroom. Rather than erase the home\u2019s history, we wanted to reinterpret it through a more contemporary lens.<\/p>\n

Underfoot, a bold geometric tile pattern introduces movement and energy while connecting the black-and-white palette throughout the space.<\/p>\n

The combination is graphic, timeless, and unapologetically bold.<\/p>\n

Storage Designed Around Daily Life<\/h3>\n

One of the biggest challenges in the original suite was the lack of practical storage.<\/p>\n

A pedestal sink offered little functionality, and closet storage was divided into smaller, less efficient spaces.<\/p>\n

The renovation introduced a custom double vanity with substantial storage, integrated medicine cabinets, dedicated dressing areas, and thoughtfully planned organization throughout the suite.<\/p>\n

The separate water closet provides privacy, while built-in storage keeps everyday necessities hidden from view, creating a cleaner and more relaxing environment.<\/p>\n

Luxury is often less about extravagance and more about ease. Every element of this suite was designed to simplify our clients\u2019 daily routines.<\/p>\n

Honoring the Home\u2019s Character<\/h3>\n

One of the aspects we love most about renovating older homes is finding the balance between preservation and transformation.<\/p>\n

This Portland home already possessed beautiful architectural character, and we wanted the new design to feel like a natural evolution rather than a complete departure.<\/p>\n

Original proportions, traditional detailing, and the home\u2019s inherent charm remain intact, while contemporary furnishings, striking materials, and layered finishes bring the suite firmly into the present.<\/p>\n

The result feels fresh without feeling trendy and sophisticated without sacrificing warmth.<\/p>\n

A Retreat Designed for Everyday Living<\/h3>\n

Today, the primary suite functions entirely differently than it did before.<\/p>\n

The bedroom feels calmer and more intentional. The bathroom delivers the experience of a luxury hotel. Storage is integrated seamlessly throughout the space. Every square foot serves a purpose.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, the suite now reflects the way our clients want to live.<\/p>\n

This project is a reminder that great design isn\u2019t always about creating more space. Sometimes it\u2019s about seeing the potential within the existing footprint and transforming it into something extraordinary.<\/p>\n

Because true luxury isn\u2019t measured in square feet. It\u2019s measured in how a space makes you feel.<\/p>\n
