It opens with an anachronistic moment, but, there are shivers galore to follow.  Murtha, with personal favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/mikesfilmtalk.com\/2024\/01\/05\/friends-forever-2023-independent-film-makes-horror-look-easy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thomas Angeletti<\/a> as cinematographer\/co-editor, show us just how effective horror <em>should<\/em> look. * Angeletti shares the snipping and trimming duties with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm12253415\/?ref_=ttfc_fcr_7_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Justin Jean<\/a>.*<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-trench-of-the-damned-story\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trench of the Damned Story<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two \u201cGI\u2019s\u201d are embedded in a trench. It is 1944. World War II is happening all around them. The anachronistic pachyderm in question, is a cigarette filter. A creation that did not start appearing until the 1950s. A former smoker, moi, who only stopped with outside intervention, noticed the filter immediately. (I\u2019m also somewhat who was given C Rations in training, smokes for the GI\u2019s were short; no filter.) *On a side note: The cigarette looked abnormally long. Almost like what England called, \u201cLuxury Length.\u201d Back when \u201c100\u2019s\u201d first came on the market.*<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-film-works-though\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Film Works Though<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment we meet what the soldiers are facing, in that trench, the adrenaline spikes. The \u201czombie\u201d creature takes us right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0089908\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_Return%20to%20O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Return to OZ<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*Long side note. The 1985 Dark Fantasy movie starred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000103\/?ref_=tt_ov_3_1\">Fairuza Balk<\/a> as Dorothy. In the story, she is chased by \u201cWheelers.\u201d My daughter swore she was traumatised by these things. I finally saw them and agreed, they are indeed  stress inducing. Murtha manages, in one almost offhand scene, to makes us 10 years old all over again. It must be said that Mark Murtha is also a Mike\u2019s Film Talk favorite. I\u2019ll wait.*<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-trench-of-the-damned-cast\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Trench of the Damned Cast<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm9805998\/?ref_=ttfc_fcr_4_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daniel Griesheimer<\/a> is Burke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm18552483\/?ref_=ttfc_fcr_4_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Motti Ken<\/a> is Kincaid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm9101650\/?ref_=tt_cst_t_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Murtha<\/a> is Dr Wolff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm18552482\/?ref_=tt_cst_t_7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sean Worthen<\/a> is The Experiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone gives their \u201cA\u201d game here and it moves this 12 minute film forward with ease. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-where-others-have-gone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Others Have Gone<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Movies set in trenches are not unique, but they are pretty spaced out.  <a href=\"https:\/\/mikesfilmtalk.com\/2012\/06\/07\/deathwatch-2002\/\">Deathwatch<\/a> (2002) is a firm favorite. Set in a trench in WW1, a group of British soldiers discover something much worse that the Hun. That 94 minute film, with a splendid cast; Jamie Bell, Kris Marshall and Andy Serkis are just three of a very talented group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Trench of the Damned<\/em><\/strong>  gets us right in the imagination. That filter, yanked an entire star off the ranking. The film is on its Festival Run right now.
