With Western journalists confined to their hotels, the story could only be told by insiders like Tavakolian. A\u00a0year earlier, she had photographed teen girls climbing a\u00a0fence, clad in a\u00a0hijab, sunglasses, and Adidas trainers on their way to a\u00a0protest and understood the lengths she had to go. She scaled trees and pounded the streets, creating an epic portrait of solidarity in the face of state sanctioned violence. The Western media quickly took notice, propelling Tavakolian on the global stage with representation by Polaris Images, a\u00a0New York photo agency, while continuing to live and work in\u00a0Iran.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the next two decades, Tavakolian built a\u00a0singular career covering conflicts across the <\/span>Middle East<\/span><\/a>. But after her father died prematurely in 2019<\/span>, she stopped making photographs for nearly two years and returned to her archive in search of where it all began. It is here, in her new monograph\u00a0<\/span>And They Laughed at Me<\/span><\/i><\/a> (Kehrer Verlag), that Tavakolian maps her path with the hard-won wisdom of one who has lived to tell the\u00a0tale.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For many years, I\u00a0was curious to understand why I\u00a0have such a\u00a0melancholic eye, why I\u00a0see the world the way I\u00a0do, and why I\u00a0am often drawn to stories that are complex and have no clear answers,\u201d\u00a0Tavakolian says. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Going back to the contact sheets helped me understand this. Looking at them frame by frame, I\u00a0could follow the path my eye was taking as a\u00a0teenager. What surprised me most was how consistent that gaze was. Even before I\u00a0knew what kind of photographer I\u00a0wanted to become, I\u00a0was already drawn to moments of vulnerability, uncertainty, and quiet emotion. I\u00a0realised that I\u00a0was not looking for answers. I\u00a0was looking for questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
