Led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/cymraeg\/staff-profiles\/listing\/profile\/syr\/#publications\">Simon Rodway<\/a>, a linguist at Aberystwyth University in Wales, the project aims to document the surviving words from languages that have been largely lost to history.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the researchers have collected more than 1,000 words\u2014\u201cjust a tiny little glimpse into the language,\u201d Rodway tells Ailsa Chang of NPR\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/12\/09\/nx-s1-5637378\/how-ancient-curses-are-helping-create-a-celtic-dictionary\">All Things Considered<\/a>.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re not going to get many more than that because the records of the Celtic languages in Britain and Ireland are not great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers are gathering material from ancient inscriptions and texts, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/cymraeg\/news\/news-article\/title-285203-en.html\">statement<\/a> from the university. Their dictionary will include words from about 325 B.C.E. through 500 C.E., reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2025\/dec\/08\/linguists-start-compiling-first-ever-complete-dictionary-of-ancient-celtic\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Steven Morris. They were hugely bureaucratic, so we have a lot of letters. We\u2019ve got legal stuff. We\u2019ve got inscriptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These Roman sources, written in Latin or Greek, contain Celtic names of places, ethnic groups and individuals, Rodway tells the <em>Guardian<\/em>. They include letters written by Roman soldiers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Julius-Caesar-Roman-ruler\">Julius Caesar<\/a>\u2019s accounts of his northern European conquests.<\/p>\n<p>Some key inscriptions are found on stones in Cornwall and Ireland. These writings use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maynoothuniversity.ie\/research\/spotlight-research\/ogham-stones-which-show-earliest-writing-ireland\">Ogham<\/a> alphabet, which features\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ogham.academy\/blog\/ogham-letters\">letters<\/a> made of straight lines. Other interesting sources include a group of four or five texts written entirely in ancient Celtic, which Rodway calls \u201ccurse tablets.\u201d These lead panels were engraved by Celts who were wronged and wanted revenge.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>\u169b\u1688\u1691\u168b\u1680\u1684\u1689\u1691\u1688\u1688\u169c and \u169b\u1691\u168c\u1690\u168b\u169c<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/2yWWFLI5kFU\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"2yWWFLI5kFU\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMostly, they\u2019re curses against thieves who have stolen the belongings of people, particularly in Bath,\u201d Rodway tells \u201cAll Things Considered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around 70 C.E., Roman settlers built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Roman-Baths\">bathhouses<\/a> above geothermal springs in the city now known as Bath. The baths attracted both tourists and thieves, Rodway says. Apparently, bathers would exit the pools to find their clothes had been stolen.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insight\">\n<div>\n<h4>Quick fact: More Roman bath discoveries<\/h4>\n<p>In 2023, archaeologists announced that they\u2019d unearthed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/lost-gems-over-2000-years-old-found-in-roman-baths-180981566\/\">2,000-year-old gemstones<\/a> in the drain beneath a Roman bath in Carlisle, England.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat they\u2019d do then is they would find somebody who had a sheet of lead, and they\u2019d scratch a curse on that lead tablet, asking a god or a goddess to do all sorts of horrible things to the person who\u2019d taken their belongings,\u201d Rodway adds. \u201cAnd they\u2019d throw that into the spring, which was consecrated to the goddess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers will compare their collection of ancient Celtic words to the medieval and modern Celtic languages. Per the statement, today\u2019s Celtic languages are very different from each other, but there are some similarities.
