ETFs vary in price through the day as they are bought and sold.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETFs<\/a> with exposure to more underlying assets than the capital you put in \u2013 it\u2019s a fancy term for <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;leverage (gearing) is\u00a0any technique used to multiply gains and losses; usually it involves buying assets with borrowed funds, in the hope that income or\u00a0price appreciation will exceed the cost of borrowing&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/leverage\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">leverage<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>They usually hold a lot of physical assets (typically stocks) plus a futures overlay.<\/li>\n<li>CEEs are difficult to access from the UK \u2013 a\u00a0couple of brokers will let UK investors buy US <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A security that tracks an index, a commodity or a basket of assets like an index fund, but trades like a stock on an exchange. ETFs vary in price through the day as they are bought and sold.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETFs<\/a>, but only in taxable accounts.<\/li>\n<li>We now have one in the UK \u2013 the WisdomTree US Efficient Core UCITS <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Exchange traded fund - a basket of assets that tracks an index and is listed on a stock exhange (unlike traditional index funds which are not listed), which means that ETFs can be bought and sold through the trading day. ETFs\u00a0typically have higher liquidity and\u00a0lower running costs that index funds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf-2\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETF<\/a> (NTSX) \u2013 which holds 90% of US large-cap stocks and adds a 60% exposure to US Treasury bonds via a futures overlay, for a total exposure of 150% or 50% additional <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;leverage (gearing) is\u00a0any technique used to multiply gains and losses; usually it involves buying assets with borrowed funds, in the hope that income or\u00a0price appreciation will exceed the cost of borrowing&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/leverage\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">leverage<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>There are five funds in the US CEE range from WisdomTree:\n<ul>\n<li>NTSX \u2013 US stocks plus Treasuries<\/li>\n<li>NTSI \u2013 International stocks plus Treasuries<\/li>\n<li>NTSE \u2013 Emerging Markets Stocks plus Treasuries<\/li>\n<li>GDE \u2013 Gold plus US stocks<\/li>\n<li>GDMN \u2013 Gold plus Gold Miners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Portfolios including CEEs outperformed their unlevered counterparts\n<ul>\n<li>They have increased volatility (as expected) but their Sharpes are comparable or better.<\/li>\n<li>The drawdowns are not great, so you wouldn\u2019t want a huge allocation to this<\/li>\n<li>Their PWRs (perpetual withdrawal rate \u2013 similar to the Failsafe Withdrawal Rate, but not adjusted for inflation) are excellent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><span id=\"Return_Stacked_Funds\">Return Stacked Funds<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>We\u2019re working through a series of six articles on CEEs by Justin from Risk Parity Chronicles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Article number four looks at some new funds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I mentioned in my first post that ReSolve and NewFound have joined forces to launch some \u201cReturn Stacked\u201d <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A security that tracks an index, a commodity or a basket of assets like an index fund, but trades like a stock on an exchange. ETFs vary in price through the day as they are bought and sold.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETFs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first one is RBST, which is 100% bonds plus 100% managed futures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote wp_automatic_readability=\"12.571428571429\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">On the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Debt instrument issued by a government or company to raise money; pays regular interest with the original capital returned at maturity.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/bond\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">bond<\/a> side, it will have a target duration of 2 to 8 years, though may purchase bonds up to 20 years in term. On the managed futures side, it will be a long &amp; short fund covering 27 separate markets in four <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Anything that has a \u00a0monetary value (e.g. property, investments, cash).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/asset\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asset<\/a> classes: equities, bonds, currencies, and commodities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The second fund (in the works when Justin was writing) is RSSB, which is 100% global equities plus 100% bonds (Justin thought it would be 90\/60, but their plans changed).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This launched during the week I was writing these posts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span id=\"Managed_futures_funds\">Managed futures funds<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Back to article number four \u2013 a third fund mentioned by Justin is the first leveraged managed futures fund \u2013 Tuttle Capital 2X DBMF <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Exchange traded fund - a basket of assets that tracks an index and is listed on a stock exhange (unlike traditional index funds which are not listed), which means that ETFs can be bought and sold through the trading day. ETFs\u00a0typically have higher liquidity and\u00a0lower running costs that index funds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf-2\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETF<\/a> (MFUT).<\/p>\n<blockquote wp_automatic_readability=\"12.584474885845\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">On the managed futures side, there aren\u2019t even that many regular <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A security that tracks an index, a commodity or a basket of assets like an index fund, but trades like a stock on an exchange. Of the few, iMGP DBi Managed Futures Strategy <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Exchange traded fund - a basket of assets that tracks an index and is listed on a stock exhange (unlike traditional index funds which are not listed), which means that ETFs can be bought and sold through the trading day. ETFs\u00a0typically have higher liquidity and\u00a0lower running costs that index funds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf-2\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETF<\/a> (DBMF) is my choice. And you have KMLM, WTMF, FMF, and CTA, but that is not very many.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Considering their usefulness, CTA funds are surprisingly rare (there are none here in the UK) but if I were a US investor, six funds is getting there.<\/p>\n<h6><span id=\"Fund_List\">Fund List<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Justin notes that the usual <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Exchange traded fund - a basket of assets that tracks an index and is listed on a stock exhange (unlike traditional index funds which are not listed), which means that ETFs can be bought and sold through the trading day. ETFs\u00a0typically have higher liquidity and\u00a0lower running costs that index funds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf-2\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETF<\/a> screener sites (he uses Barchart and VettFI in the States \u2013 I use JustETF here in the UK) don\u2019t pick up the CEEs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>So he has created his own list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list has a lot of US mutual funds on it, and since I can\u2019t access those from the UK, I have provided an abridged list of just <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A security that tracks an index, a commodity or a basket of assets like an index fund, but trades like a stock on an exchange. ETFs\u00a0typically have higher liquidity and\u00a0lower running costs that index funds.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/etf-2\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ETF<\/a> (which was actually the second to launch, in September 2023).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RSST is 100% US large-cap stock plus 100% managed futures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s expensive (1.04% pa in charges) but not if you see that as the fee for an extra 100% of <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;leverage (gearing) is\u00a0any technique used to multiply gains and losses; usually it involves buying assets with borrowed funds, in the hope that income or\u00a0price appreciation will exceed the cost of borrowing&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/leverage\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">leverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can also see this as a hurdle rate for the managed futures portion of the fund to clear, such that the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Exchange traded fund - a basket of assets that tracks an index and is listed on a stock exhange (unlike traditional index funds which are not listed), which means that ETFs can be bought and sold through the trading day. There is hope that they will bring to the average DIY investor some new possibilities typically reserved for a few: the use of smart, reasonable <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;leverage (gearing) is\u00a0any technique used to multiply gains and losses; usually it involves buying assets with borrowed funds, in the hope that income or\u00a0price appreciation will exceed the cost of borrowing&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/leverage\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">leverage<\/a> to achieve higher expected returns while still maintaining highly diversified portfolios. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I\u2019ve spoken of this as the second path of Risk Parity [higher returns for the same level of volatility].<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It also covers how to account for these \u201cstrange\u201d beasts (are they 90+10, 90+60 or 100+100?) in your portfolios.\u00a0He defines some terms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Actual allocation \u2013 where the cash is invested<\/li>\n<li>Proportional allocation \u2013 the ratio between <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Anything that has a \u00a0monetary value (e.g. property, investments, cash).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/asset\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asset<\/a> classes, usually as a share of 100<\/li>\n<li>Effective allocation \u2013 how the fund performs (its exposure to <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Anything that has a \u00a0monetary value (e.g. property, investments, cash).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/asset\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asset<\/a> classes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some fund examples:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples.jpg\" data-slb-active=\"1\" data-slb-asset=\"1084645879\" data-slb-internal=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-42595\" src=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"Examples\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples-980x440.jpg 980w, https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples.jpg 984w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-42595\" src=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"Examples\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples-980x440.jpg 980w, https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Examples.jpg 984w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how Justin recommends tracking the funds:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Keep track of proportional allocations. This will help you put the different parts of a fund correctly in the right <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Anything that has a \u00a0monetary value (e.g. property, investments, cash).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/glossary\/asset\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">asset<\/a> class, and allow you to keep track of the actual dollars in your portfolio.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Then, for percentages of your portfolio, use the effective allocation.
