{"id":351667,"date":"2025-12-19T18:38:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T18:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/adventure\/im-going-to-spend-three-months-counting-penguins-in-antarctica\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T18:38:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T18:38:00","slug":"im-going-to-spend-three-months-counting-penguins-in-antarctica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=351667","title":{"rendered":"I\u2019m going to spend three months counting penguins in Antarctica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"text\">\n<p class=\"standfirst\">Peter will spend three months in Antarctica working as a wildlife monitor at Port Lockroy, home to the world\u2019s southernmost post office<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who have been following the blog for a while, you may <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">recall that in 2023, I secured a coveted job at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukaht.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">UK Antarctic Heritage Trust<\/a>\u00a0(UKAHT), a charity responsible for preserving<\/span> British heritage sites in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasandboots.com\/destinations\/antarctica\/\">Antarctica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-107310\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Every year, UKAHT sends a small team to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukaht.org\/heritage\/port-lockroy\/\">Port Lockroy<\/a> to run the world\u2019s southernmost post office and a museum that serves as a time capsule of early polar science.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Introducing Port Lockroy: Base A\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LDbsPC2Kxgo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>I actually applied to work at Port Lockroy in 2022. My timing couldn\u2019t have been worse. Post-pandemic, the charity received a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/four-women-selected-to-live-and-work-in-a-remote-part-of-antarctica-with-a-colony-of-penguins-12711627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">record number<\/a> of applications \u2013 over 6,000 \u2013 and I wasn\u2019t one of the lucky ones. However, six months later, on the way back from a month-long sojourn in Central America, I spot an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CmAK8Desz38\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram post<\/a> for a job vacancy: Communications Officer at the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.<\/p>\n<p>I hastily applied and, a few weeks later, started working for the Trust where I combine several of my passions: writing articles, editing photography and researching stories of the explorers, scientists and conservationists who have braved one of the most challenging environments on Earth. My job? Wildlife monitor \u2013 which involves counting penguins on the tiny football-pitch-sized Goudier Island on the Antarctic Peninsula, 9,000 miles away from my home in London. <\/p>\n<p>Three years after applying to work at Port Lockroy, I\u2019ve found myself doing just that. I will be spending Christmas, New Year and my birthday in Antarctica. Sometimes, life just finds a way of working itself out in the end.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will I really be counting penguins in Antarctica?<\/h2>\n<p>I will be heading to Antarctica in December to spend three months living and working at Port Lockroy. I expect to be home in March 2026. Now a historic site and museum, and home to the world\u2019s most remote post office, the site is completed by a small gift shop where visitors can buy souvenirs with their purchases directly supporting the trust\u2019s important work in heritage conservation in one of the most challenging environments on the planet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A replica historic <a href=\"https:\/\/nissens.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nissen hut<\/a> completes the site and serves as a bunkhouse for our small team during the austral summer. Abandoned for three decades, Port Lockroy was restored in 1996 with support from UKAHT, who then took over full management of the site in 2006. The team also monitors the local gentoo penguin colony and carries out challenging conservation work on some of the most remote historic buildings on Earth.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who are the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust?<\/h2>\n<p>UKAHT protects and preserves sites and artefacts of international significance across the Antarctic Peninsula. Since then, they have worked to conserve and care for these sites to make them safe, secure and accessible for visitors from around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This season sees the Trust embark on one of its most significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c77d3vgn848o\">conservation works<\/a> at Port Lockroy since 1996, spanning three seasons. The three-year conservation plan begins this season with the team working to stabilise the structure.
