Zulu Mecca Responds To Dlala Thukzin\u2019s Hit-Making Advice To SA Hip Hop. South African rapper and actress Zulu Mecca has added her voice to the ongoing conversation about the direction of local hip hop, responding directly to recent remarks by Dlala Thukzin<\/a> on what rappers should do to make hit songs. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Rather than prescribing a formula, Mecca is urging the culture to embrace diversity, nuance, and creative freedom within the genre. <\/p>\n

Expanding the conversation further, Mecca compared the local scene to the United States, where she believes the vastness of the market allows artists of different styles to thrive without needing universal approval. \u201cIn my opinion, the HipHop scene in the US is so vast coz it gives artists of any style the potential to be great,\u201d<\/em> she wrote. Pointing to streaming numbers, she noted that while she may not personally know a Dax song, his three million monthly Spotify listeners signal undeniable success. IN MY OPINION, the HipHop scene in the US is so vast coz it gives artists of any style the potential to be great. I don\u2019t know one Dax song but with 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, I can assume he\u2019s a successful rapper. What is success here in SA?<\/p>\n
