The institution shuttered in 2011, the same year that former dictator Muammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed. Some of the museum\u2019s final patrons were armed men who incorrectly believed a secret tunnel was accessible inside and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/africa\/museum-libya-ancient-treasures-reopens-uprising-gadhafi-rcna248984\">vandalized a turquoise Volkswagen Beetle<\/a> belonging to the fallen leader.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reopening of the National Museum is not just a cultural moment but a live testimony that Libya is building its institutions,\u201d Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbiebah said in an address at the ceremony, before wielding a stick and officially opening the museum\u2019s doors.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly known as As-Saraya Al-Hamra, or the Red Castle, the building\u2019s nearly 110,000 square feet of gallery space will house artifacts spanning 5,000 years of North African history. Mosaics, coins, sculptures, rock art and murals from Libya\u2019s prehistory\u2014including Roman, Greek and Islamic periods\u2014are poised to be on display.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Friezes and statues from Leptis Magna and Sabratha, <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/183\/\">UNESCO World Heritage Sites<\/a> and some of the best-preserved cities from the Roman Empire\u2019s expansion into what is now Libya, will be on view.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"insight\">\n<div>\n<h4>Quick fact: The timeline of reopening<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Libya&#8217;s Government of National Unity came to power in 2021 and began to renovate the National Museum two years later.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the uprising, many artifacts were smuggled into hideaways to shield them from robbers. Roughly 21 items have since been returned to Libya since the fall of Gaddafi, <em>Reuter\u2019s <\/em>Ahmed Elumami <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/libyas-red-castle-museum-opens-first-time-since-fall-gaddafi-2025-12-13\/\">reports<\/a>, including nine artifacts from the United States. The repatriation of roughly two dozen items from Spain and more from Austria is being negotiated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a museum about the whole of Libya \u2026 the archaeological masterpieces of the whole country,\u201d Mustafa Turjman, the museum\u2019s former head of antiquities who was involved in the hiding of the museum\u2019s goods, told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/16\/libya-national-museum-reopens\">The Guardian<\/a>\u2019<\/em>s<em> <\/em>Patrick Wintour. \u201cIt is a force for unification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Museum visitors will be able to view ancient human remains excavated from the archaeological sites of Uan Muhuggiag and Jaghbub. Few artifacts are as precious as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/africas-oldest-mummy-is-a-toddler-who-died-5400-years-ago-nearly-a-millennium-before-the-egyptians-started-mummifying-their-dead-180987227\/\">5,400-year-old mummified toddler<\/a>, which was discovered in the sands of Tashwinat Valley, in southwestern Libya, in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>Since at least 1999, the mummy has sat in the National Museum where experts have attributed improper storage, frequent power outages and a lack of trained preservationists to its bones\u2019 decay. A movement to save the ancient infant and send it to Rome for restoration and analysis has gained momentum over the past year, Amr Fathallah reported for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/africas-oldest-mummy-is-a-toddler-who-died-5400-years-ago-nearly-a-millennium-before-the-egyptians-started-mummifying-their-dead-180987227\/\"><em>Smithsonian<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>in September.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must do everything in our power to recover what remains, if not for scientific value, then simply out of human decency,\u201d Ramadan al-Shaibani, a Libyan antiquities expert, told Fathallah. \u201cAfter all, this was a child, a human being, not just an archaeological artifact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Long delays are built into the museum\u2019s history\u2014though it was founded in 1919, the museum opened to the public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alowais.com\/libexhreopen\/\">for the first time in 1988<\/a>.
