{"id":349926,"date":"2025-12-18T18:29:33","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T18:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/alabama-joins-ftc-deceptive-practices-lawsuit-against-uber\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T18:29:33","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T18:29:33","slug":"alabama-joins-ftc-deceptive-practices-lawsuit-against-uber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=349926","title":{"rendered":"Alabama joins FTC deceptive practices lawsuit against Uber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that his office is among 22 state and county law enforcement agencies joining a federal lawsuit against Uber.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uber has been accused of charging customers for subscriptions to its Uber One service without consent, failing to deliver promised benefits such as free deliveries and monthly savings and making subscriptions difficult to cancel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uber One is a monthly or yearly subscription service that promises $0 delivery fees and up to $25 in monthly savings; however, the FTC said consumers reported failures to receive both promised benefits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The complaint alleges that Uber users were enrolled in the service without their knowledge, including those who signed up for a free trial and were automatically charged if they failed to cancel the service. The filing also described cancelling an Uber One subscription as \u201cexceedingly difficult,\u201d citing that users had to navigate 23 screens and take up to 32 actions to end their subscription.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The complaint seeks civil penalties from Uber for the company\u2019s alleged violations of the Restore Online Shoppers\u2019 Confidence Act as well as state consumer protection laws, such as Alabama\u2019s Consumer Protection Act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A previous deceptive practices lawsuit was filed against the ride-booking companies Uber Technologies Inc. and Uber USA LLC by the Federal Trade Commission in April. The FTC, alongside 21 states and the District of Columbia, filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/UberetalFirstAmendedComplaint_0.pdf\">amended complaint<\/a> against Uber in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamaag.gov\/attorney-general-marshall-announces-lawsuit-against-uber-technologies-inc-and-uber-usa-llc\/\">press release<\/a>, Marshall\u2019s office wrote that the attorney general, through involvement in the suit, is seeking restitution for customers, penalties and costs against Uber as well as an injunction against the ride-hailing giant\u2019s allegedly deceptive subscription practices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBig corporations like Uber don\u2019t get a free pass to break the law. Advertising \u2018free\u2019 trials and then trapping consumers in subscriptions they can\u2019t easily cancel is deceptive, plain and simple,\u201d\u00a0Marshall said in a written statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMillions of Americans signed up for Uber One trusting the company\u2019s promises. Others never signed up at all yet were charged anyway,\u201d the attorney general continued. \u201cThat kind of corporate abuse is exactly why our coalition joined the FTC\u2019s lawsuit. We are standing up for consumers and sending a clear message: no company, no matter how big, is above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of early 2025, Uber served more than 180 million monthly active users worldwide, with the service available in more than 200 cities in Alabama. Uber has denied the allegations set forth by the FTC and lawsuit partners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe majority of cancellations take 20 seconds or less and can be done in the app anytime,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-ftc-21-states-file-amended-complaint-against-uber-alleging-deceptive-billing-2025-12-15\/\">Uber told Reuters<\/a> in an emailed statement on Monday. \u201cPrior to December 2024, as explained during sign up, consumers within 48 hours of their next billing period had to contact Support in order to cancel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the amended complaint was announced on Monday, Uber\u2019s stock price has dropped nearly 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coalition is being led by Maryland and includes the attorneys general of Arizona, Connecticut, D.C., Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, alongside the district attorney for Alameda County, California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshall urged affected customers in Alabama to notify the attorney general\u2019s office of their claims by filing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamaag.gov\/consumer-complaint\/\">online consumer complaint<\/a> or by calling Alabama\u2019s Consumer Hotline.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
