It was also an early harvest, with some growers picking grapes two weeks ahead of schedule. So, what does all that mean? Expect low yields, which means less wine available. Results will vary, with some producers making excellent wines while others struggle to produce their best.

The rainy winter helped refill water tables, aiding growers through the drought. Budbreak appeared near the end of March, just before another frost hit. Hail struck the vineyards in early June and again later that month. Veraison began by mid-July under very warm, hot, and dry conditions, averaging 39°C, 102°F! The story had two sides—some much-needed rain fell, providing vital nourishment to the vines. However, the mid-August rains brought another destructive hailstorm.

Because the harvest was early, white wine grapes started as early as August 17, with red grapes harvested just one week later. Alcohol levels were kept in check, but producers adapted their approach based on their vines and vision, resulting in a diverse range of wines and styles. Overall, 2022 is a better vintage than 2021. Many excellent wines are produced, with some producers creating truly special bottles worth your attention.

Hail attacked the vines fiercely again on August 14 and 15, destroying a large area of vines. This is why many producers couldn’t produce their top cuvées. On the bright side, the remaining juice often used in the Cuvees has been blended into the traditional wines, adding a bit more character, and complexity. The wine blends about 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre, and 3% Cinsault. Drink from 2025-2037. 93 Pts

2022 Albin Jacumin My Grenache – Coming in at a whopping 16% ABV, this is big, but not over the top. Ripe, but not overripe, the wine is hot, with a scorched quality to the fruits, along with raisins and figs. The wine is produced from 100% old vine Grenache, aged in a combination of demi-muids and amphora. My guess is, this will be at its best in its youth. Drink from 2025-2032. 91 Pts

2022 Albin Jacumin a Aime – Black cherries, black raspberries, mint, and garrigue show easily in the nose, and on the palate. A bit firm in style, give it a year or two to see if it softens and fills out. This is one of the few wines produced from a blend of all 13 allowable, red varieties, though with a large percentage of Grenache in the blend. Drink from 2024-2034. 90 Pts

2022 Andre Brunel Cuvee Centenaire – Elegant, sophisticated, and already charming, the wine shows off its core of sweet, ripe, kirsch, strawberry, and cherries, complicated by thyme, pepper, herbs, and spice with ease. Texturally, this is simply fabulous. And it is going to drink well almost on release. The wine is made from 100% old vine Grenache from vines that are well over 100 years of age, which give this good concentration and depth of flavor. The wine comes from 100% year old Grenache, with Mourvedre, Syrah and other AOC allowed grape varieties. Powerful, concentrated, deep and intense, the nose explodes with its array of dried flowers, spices, Dark in color, in fact, this is the darkest wine of the vintage, the aromatic profile shows its complex array of black cherries, black raspberries, blackberries, smoke, thyme, and peppery herbs. The palate is even better with its seamless layers of spicy, deep, dark red, and black fruits. There is lift, length, purity, and intensity that are impossible to ignore.
