According to a study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/arco.70014\"><em>Archaeology in Oceania<\/em><\/a>, these artifacts are 170-year-old \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/stonetoolsmuseum.com\/artefact\/australia\/tula-adze\/1893\/\">tulas<\/a>\u201d made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Australian-Aboriginal\">Aboriginal<\/a> groups.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Australia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/\">Griffith University<\/a> excavated the tulas in western Queensland in 2023. They were surveying a small body of water nearby when they glimpsed a cluster of jagged edges emerging from the earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as they saw it, they knew it was something special,\u201d lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/experts.griffith.edu.au\/18466-yinika-perston\">Yinika Perston<\/a>, an archaeologist at Griffith University, tells Abbey Halter and Maddie Nixon of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-01\/aboriginal-artefacts-discovered-outback-queensland-pitta-pitta\/106073188\">Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a> (ABC). \u201cWe could tell they were stone tools that someone had made there and, because they were all clustered together, we thought maybe it might be a deliberately buried bundle of tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/nuNg_iZRgnYZZSldoUBGQKRPxBA=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(1024x683:1025x684)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/12\/e8\/12e81bab-073b-475a-ac9a-dbf3d305387a\/dr-yinika-perston-excavating-1-2048x1365.jpeg\" alt=\"excavating\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Yinika Perston excavating the cache<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Griffith University<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.griffith.edu.au\/2025\/12\/02\/rare-stone-tool-cache-tells-story-of-trade-and-ingenuity\/\">statement<\/a> from Griffith University, the <a href=\"https:\/\/jajoowarrngara.org\/resource\/pitta-pitta-welcome\/\">Pitta Pitta<\/a> people likely created the tulas, which are meant to be attached to handles and used for woodworking, before burying them near a waterhole. Three pairs of the tulas fit together, indicating they were created from the same stone at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think the Pitta Pitta ancestors were likely planning to trade the tools in these caches when the time came, but for some reason never retrieved them,\u201d says Perston in the statement. \u201cOne possible reason for this may be due to disruption caused by European arrival\u2014but the dates aren\u2019t precise enough to be sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"insight\">\n<div>\n<h4>Quick fact: When did the first Europeans arrive in Australia?<\/h4>\n<p>The Dutch explorer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nma.gov.au\/defining-moments\/resources\/janszoon-maps-northern-australian-coast\">Willem Janszoon<\/a> landed on the coast of Cape York Peninsula in 1606, making him the first confirmed European to reach Australia.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to the study, radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating techniques suggest the recently discovered tulas were buried sometime between roughly 1793 and 1913, Perston tells ABC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Tulas] were still used quite a lot during the contact era,\u201d Perston says. \u201cThere\u2019s lots of photos of people using them; there\u2019s written record accounts of people using them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tools might have once been buried in a container made of kangaroo skin, tree bark, woven string or cloth, write the study authors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-found-a-cache-of-rare-aboriginal-artefacts-telling-a-story-of-trade-and-ingenuity-269282\"><em>Conversation<\/em><\/a>. However, high-powered microscopes revealed no traces of a container, possibly because plant and animal material \u201cdoes not survive well in desert conditions,\u201d they add.<\/p>\n<p>The region where the tulas were found, near the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queensland.com\/us\/en\/places-to-see\/destination-information\/p-56b25e452880253d74c45d6c-boulia\">Boulia<\/a>, is prone to both bushfires and sudden flooding, per the <em>Conversation<\/em>. The Pitta Pitta people once built <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.jcu.edu.au\/qar\/article\/view\/3799\">stone shelters<\/a> to shield themselves from harsh sun and winter winds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInnovation and connection helped them survive the region\u2019s harsh climates,\u201d Perston says in the statement. \u201cIf they could not find resources locally, they bartered along vast trade routes. \u201d Among the goods traded by Pitta Pitta communities were stone axes, pearl shells, ochre and <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/adj.12935\">pituri<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/GO9eEMgjxp6Bzk_j5h86hJV9Y6U=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(500x43:501x44)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/8c\/c5\/8cc59bf8-587a-4860-86d1-54ee32da9917\/tula_hafted_onto_the_end_of_a_wooden_handle_using_resin_ethnographic_example.jpeg\" alt=\"handle\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      An example of a wooden handle with a tula attached to it<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Archaeology in Oceania<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The cache of tulas is only the second collection of this size to be unearthed in Australia, reports ABC. The other discovery of this nature, excavated in 1988, was also found on Pitta Pitta land. Perston tells ABC that this kind of tool is \u201cfound and used pretty much all over Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just so happens that that other bundle is only seven kilometers [roughly four miles] away from where we found this one,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>The 1988 discovery featured just 34 tulas and 18 items known as flakes, which may have been unfinished tulas. Meanwhile, the newly discovered collection includes 60 complete tulas. \u201cIt is now clear this caching practice was no fluke,\u201d write the researchers in the <em>Conversation<\/em>. \u201cBurying bundles of unused stone tulas was a repeated practice here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trevina Rogers, a Pitta Pitta artist and co-author of the study, tells ABC that the cache is \u201ca very exciting discovery.\u201d She\u2019s been documenting Pitta Pitta culture since childhood and has more recently been collaborating with Griffith University to discover what her ancestors left behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the only way to find out, to get out there, and you always find something new,\u201d Rogers adds. She hopes the recent discovery will make local residents proud.
