Since this is the Season of Thanks, I\u2019m offering something I think writers will be thankful for. It\u2019s something editors and agents wish more writers understood: your picture book needs to answer one question fast\u2014<em>so what?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">Not in a mean way. But more like a <em>who is this for and why will it matter to them?<\/em> way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">Because here\u2019s the thing: your manuscript doesn\u2019t just need to convince<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-sZWQw6kBqNk\/Wmtr2jZAhpI\/AAAAAAAAJZg\/s4xwVZlu8r0OHNdxsKvDbrBjbeFRk0IEgCLcBGAs\/s1600\/so-what-1462746_1920.png\" alt=\"5 So Whats: Prioritizing Improvement Opportunities - CX Journey\u2122\" width=\"272\" height=\"272\"\/>\u00a0an editor. It needs to work for the art director planning page turns, the sales rep pitching to Barnes <span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span> Noble, the librarian deciding what to order, the teacher choosing a readaloud book for the classroom, and the grandparent standing in the aisle at Target.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">If you can\u2019t answer \u201cSo What?\u201d clearly, nobody else can either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>What \u201cSo What?\u201d Actually Means<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">It\u2019s two things:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-decimal space-y-2.5 pl-7\">\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Who needs this book?<\/strong> (Age range + the specific kid experience you\u2019re addressing)<\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>What does it give them?<\/strong> (Not a theme. A benefit they can\u00a0feel.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">Example:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-2.5 pl-7\">\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Weak<\/strong>: \u201cIt\u2019s about friendship.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Strong<\/strong>: \u201cIt\u2019s for 4\u20136 year olds learning how to navigate their first disagreements with friends. It shows them that saying sorry doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re wrong, just that you\u00a0care.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">See the difference? The second one tells everyone in the pipeline <em>exactly<\/em> who to sell it to and why a parent or teacher would buy\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>How to Prove It in Your Manuscript<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">Once you know your \u201cSo What?,\u201d make sure your manuscript delivers it across all 32 (or more!) pages.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-2.5 pl-7\">\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Does your main character\u2019s problem match the reader\u2019s real-\u200blife struggle?<\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Does the story show (not tell!) how to handle that struggle in a way kids can try themselves?<\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Does the story create natural visual moments and pacing that support the So\u00a0What?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">If <em>you<\/em> can\u2019t clearly picture the shelf it belongs on or the specific kid who needs it after reading your opening, that\u2019s your revision signal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>The \u201cSo What?\u201d Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">Try this: <em>This book is for [age] about [specific kid problem]. It helps them [what they\u2019ll learn\/\u200bfeel\/\u200bdo] through [the story\u2019s approach].<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">If you can say that out loud without hedge words like \u201ckind of\u201d or \u201cexplores the idea of,\u201d you\u2019re on the right\u00a0track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Let\u2019s look at a real example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4807QTJ\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4959 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlypicturebooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/The-Rabbit-Listened-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.onlypicturebooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/The-Rabbit-Listened-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.onlypicturebooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/The-Rabbit-Listened-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.onlypicturebooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/The-Rabbit-Listened-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.onlypicturebooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/The-Rabbit-Listened-88x88.jpeg 88w, https:\/\/www.onlypicturebooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/The-Rabbit-Listened.jpeg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span><em>The Rabbit Listened<\/em> is for 3\u20136 year olds who\u2019ve experienced something upsetting and don\u2019t know how to feel better. It helps them understand that sometimes you don\u2019t need solutions or advice\u2014you just need someone to sit with you and listen\u2014through a story where different animals offer different types of comfort until Rabbit shows up and simply stays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\">That\u2019s a \u201cSo What?\u201d every role in the pipeline can work with. The editor knows it\u2019s a social-\u200bemotional title. The art director can visualize quiet, tender moments. The sales rep can pitch it to the feelings\/\u200bcomfort shelf. And the parent shopping at their local indie bookstore immediately knows if their kid needs this book right\u00a0now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Your turn.<\/strong> Write the \u201cSo What?\u201d for your current manuscript. If it lands clearly\u2014no hemming and hawing, no vague language\u2014you\u2019ve got a solid foundation. But if you\u2019re struggling to articulate it? That\u2019s valuable information too.
