SAN JUAN BUENAVENTURA of Mr. Francis Ong<\/i><\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Years in conception but merely months in the making, my
\nown image of our town’s Patron Saint is finally done.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Mauban <\/b>is the only old town in the Philippines<\/b> that was
\ndedicated to San Buenaventura<\/b>. Though the year when the Franciscans<\/b> officially
\narrived in Mauban<\/b> has not yet been established, Huerta<\/b> notes that the town has
\nalready been in existence at least by 1583 but Fray Gaspar de San Agustin<\/b> in
\nhis work ‘Conquistas de las Islas Filipinas<\/i>‘ mentions that after reaching
\nLucban<\/b> in 1571, Juan de Salcedo<\/b> traveled to the Port of Mauban<\/b> in a place
\ncalled Alitas <\/b>where he found boats that took him to the gold mines of Paracale.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The earliest mention of Mauban<\/b> and San Buenaventura<\/b>
\ntogether, I found in a letter from 1599 sent by the Ecclesiastical Council<\/b> in
\nIntramuros<\/b> complaining about the Religious Orders<\/b>‘ non-compliance with
\nestablishing parishes and that these Churches mentioned did not have the
\nlicense to operate– one of them is for San Buenaventura de Mauban.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The antique head and paragua<\/i> (payong) came from one of
\nthose very rare occurrences when Alex Del Rosario Castro<\/b> chose to part with one
\nof his collections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

His blog, andalltheangelsandsaints<\/i>, has probably been one
\nof the biggest influences with the way I view collecting — as an adventure and
\na treasure hunt worth stories to tell. Was it a decade of random panliligaw
\n<\/i>that eventually ended with a ‘YES’ late last year?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It then underwent the careful encarna<\/i> conservation by
\nElbert Mateo<\/b> who did a very fine job in keeping true to the original. The hands
\ncame from Kevini-Tzi Hanunaneh,<\/b> the body made by reliable Louie Frederic de
\nJesus.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The metal accoutrements were made by Jass Monteroso <\/b>of Kalayaan, Laguna<\/b>
\n— the church atop the book is a faithful replica to the one carried by our
\nFestejada<\/i> image that could’ve been the image of Mauban<\/b>‘s stone church and
\nbelfry that fell during the earthquake of 1880. His sandals (not visible in the
\nphoto) have also been copied from the pair wore by the Santo Patron<\/b>.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

His vestments were beautifully made by Makoy Basco
\nCelestino <\/b>of Linea<\/b> and it was based on old photos of the wooden image enshrined
\nin the Church (This image was said to have miraculously survived the
\ndestruction of the last Spanish era church in Mauban<\/b> that was a casualty of a
\ndecember typhoon that hit our town in 1947), the image on the fachada<\/i> of the
\nChurch and the silhouette of the mozetta <\/i>(shoulder cape) of the Festejada.<\/i><\/p>\n
