The sixth of<br \/>\nJanuary is the official date that the baptism of Christ is celebrated in the<br \/>\nEastern Orthodox Church. It is not to be confused with the Western holiday also<br \/>\ncalled Epiphany which is a celebration of the magi presenting the baby Christ<br \/>\nwith their gifts.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">The word Theophany means \u201cRevelation of God;\u201d<br \/>\nTheophany therefore marks the revelation of the Trinitarian nature of God when<br \/>\nJesus was baptized. Those who witnessed heard the Father\u2019s voice from Heaven,<br \/>\nsaw the Spirit descending upon Jesus, and could see Jesus in the flesh, whom<br \/>\nGod confirmed to be His Son with His voice.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Theophany<br \/>\nIcon:<o:p\/><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">The symbolism of this icon is deep and rich. There<br \/>\nis one particular part I want to focus on for this blog entry.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Jesus is<br \/>\nnaked, or nearly so.<o:p\/><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Christ is purposely depicted with little or no<br \/>\nclothing. But why is that significant?<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">All throughout the creation narrative in Genesis<br \/>\nwe see God creating and then saying it is \u201cgood.\u201d Man and woman were created<br \/>\ntogether in God\u2019s image. They were both beautiful, and while they lacked<br \/>\nphysical garments, they were clothed in the glory of the \u201cimage\u201d and \u201clikeness\u201d<br \/>\nof God. However, when they fell into sin, they hid in shame until God brought<br \/>\nthem garments of skin to wear (which symbolizes the sinful tendency that now<br \/>\nobscures our true nature). Their natural beauty was transformed into an object<br \/>\nof shame. Adam and Eve fell, and with them fell creation.<o:p\/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEi971ZnZ1T29RckMIj4KOfkS5Vk-s3eZ-45bvNV3QlYQ7fA0pn7VssLTFf985U62DQgVLDYUp6XM9UAdAh0gyzCrnJjIq5nl-NTM4niuWNRCR6CYz7Uh00_A7ZmjFqG0N5Dn6jWaBh4DAA\/s1600\/16.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"538\" data-original-width=\"726\" height=\"474\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEi971ZnZ1T29RckMIj4KOfkS5Vk-s3eZ-45bvNV3QlYQ7fA0pn7VssLTFf985U62DQgVLDYUp6XM9UAdAh0gyzCrnJjIq5nl-NTM4niuWNRCR6CYz7Uh00_A7ZmjFqG0N5Dn6jWaBh4DAA\/s640\/16.jpg\" width=\"640\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Now, enter Jesus Christ: he represents the second<br \/>\nAdam (1 Cor 15). In shame and nakedness, Adam hid. Yet Christ comes in His<br \/>\nmajesty, both as God and man, both in glory and nakedness completely unashamed,<br \/>\nrepresenting the beauty of the undefiled human made possible through Him (and<br \/>\nin the subsequent centuries, Christians were often baptized without any<br \/>\nclothing, shedding the garments of the \u201cold man\u201d to die in Christ and be<br \/>\nresurrected in Him). But why was Christ baptized if He had no sin?<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">While Christ was baptized in the Jordan River, it<br \/>\nwas really the Jordan and all of creation that was baptized in Christ. As<br \/>\nCanticle Four of Compline of Theophany states, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">At Thine appearing in the body, the earth was sanctified, the waters<br \/>\nblessed, the heaven enlightened, and mankind was set loose from the bitter<br \/>\ntyranny of the enemy.<o:p\/><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">We see the beginning of a new creation in<br \/>\nTheophany. Things are being set right. Christ has come not only to cleanse and<br \/>\nrestore mankind, but to adopt us as heirs into His Kingdom. And when we receive<br \/>\nHis glory, not only are we redeemed, but we draw all of creation with us into<br \/>\nthe final restoration. That is why \u201ccreation groans\u201d in eager expectation,<br \/>\nawaiting the glorification of the children of God. (Rom 8)<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">A few<br \/>\nother notes about the Icon:<o:p\/><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">&#8211; At the top the Holy Spirit is descending upon<br \/>\nJesus as a dove, the Holy Spirit is depicted in a Mandorla. In this manner, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Father, using His own pre-eternal and<br \/>\nconsubstantial and subracelestial Spirit as His finger, crying out and point<br \/>\nfrom heaven, openly declared and proclaimed to all that the one then being<br \/>\nbaptized by John in the Jordan was His beloved Son, while at the same time<br \/>\nmanifesting His unity with Him.\u201d<\/i> (St. Gregory Palamas, Homily 60.15). St.<br \/>\nJohn Chrysostom also emphasizes that the Gospels state <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">the Heavens were opened<\/i>, the Spirit descends upon us so that we can<br \/>\nascend with Christ and the Spirit to the Father in Heaven. For the first time<br \/>\nsince the fall of mankind, the Heavens were opened to us.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">&#8211; The angels on the right side are waiting to<br \/>\nattend and dress Him after the baptism is over.<o:p\/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">&#8211; John the Baptist, while baptizing Jesus is<br \/>\nusually turned away or looking at the Spirit descending upon Christ. This<br \/>\nsignifies that Theophany is about elevating Jesus Christ. If this were an<br \/>\nOlympic race, it would be as if the Old Testament (John the Baptist and all<br \/>\nbefore him) were passing the baton to the New Testament (Jesus Christ and all<br \/>\nof the saints).<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">&#8211; There is an axe near John the Baptist, which<br \/>\nreflects his warning that our lives must bear the fruit of the Spirit or else<br \/>\nwe will be removed. As the<br \/>\nPsalms say:<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Psalm 73:14<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\"> <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u2013Thou did establish the sea by Thy might,<br \/>\nThou did break the heads of the dragons in the water.<o:p\/><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Psalm<br \/>\n76:15<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\"> <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u2013 The waters saw Thee,<br \/>\nO God, the waters saw Thee and were afraid; the abysses were troubled.<o:p\/><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Psalm 113:3<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\"> \u2013 <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The sea beheld and fled, [the River] Jordan<br \/>\nturned back.<\/i><o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Theophany<br \/>\nMusic:<o:p\/><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">There are several hymns sung during this season,<br \/>\nbut the forefeast Troparion hymn confirms some of the things I write about here:<br \/>\n<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">O Adam, be glad with our first mother,<br \/>\nEve; hide not as you did of old in Paradise. Seeing you naked, He has appeared<br \/>\nnow to clothe you in the first robe again. Christ has appeared, for He truly<br \/>\nwills to renew all creation.<\/i> If you can get a copy of The Festal Menaion<br \/>\nproduced by Mother Mary and Met. Kallistos Ware (St. Tikhon\u2019s Seminary Press),<br \/>\nthen you will find nearly 100 pages of deep theology regarding this feast day.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Theophany<br \/>\nCelebrations:<o:p\/><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">During this time of the year, a beautiful ceremony<br \/>\nis carried out and holy water is prepared in each parish. Congregants are free<br \/>\nto take the holy water home with them. A portion is kept and used by the church<br \/>\nthroughout the year.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;georgia&quot; , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Also, house blessings are completed during the<br \/>\nsubsequent weeks using the holy water prepared during the Feast of Theophany. It<br \/>\nis not unusual to give a small gift to the priest who has blessed the home<br \/>\n(many priests do not receive a salary and these types of events help carry them<br \/>\nfinancially through the year) and\/or you may cook a meal for him.
