margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"634\" data-original-width=\"640\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgEGlxgHDuREirqPITiORmkTfk5pmt_Z7hvPFZo78ioRH02aeP0NVJZlPpOGnRPl5vfVHW_2_SnCjTRDJNKAWf9nRBpeGL0wDUQLkjrT90OaF7chUtpJZf13l5eSOMAg0OSdXz8RXCuojQVrFvI354DQv3RxsuYnz8uKLIjv2ub5X56LgWCL_kK\/w400-h396\/wrapped%20versus%20snow.jpeg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This morning I awoke to a winter wonderland, and looking out the back door the snow cover branches reminded me of an article from back in 2008.\u00a0 At the time I didn&#8217;t really think the branches in the article looked like snow, but over the years I have come to realize that they really do evoke the memory of snow covered trees.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really surprising to me that I think of that article almost every time we get a particularly beautiful snowfall.<br \/>Here&#8217;s the article:<\/p>\n<p>WHITE WRAPPED SASSAFRAS TREES<br \/>Susanna Reppert, TheRosemaryHouse.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Having grown up with an evergreen<br \/>\ntree every year at Christmas time, the idea of a sassafras Christmas tree<br \/>\nintriqued me.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So when I had a chance to<br \/>\nmeet with Earlyn Repman of York,<br \/>\n PA who keeps this early Christmas<br \/>\ntradition alive I just knew I had to go see it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>So I loaded the family in the van on the Sunday before Christmas last<br \/>\nyear to go to view the grand wrapped Sassafras tree.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nWhile Ms Repman has other trees in her home, a red,white and blue tree and a<br \/>\ntree decorated in gingerbread, <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>the main<br \/>\nfeature in the house is the<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>7 foot in<br \/>\ncircumference sassafras tree.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>She feels<br \/>\nthat traditional green trees<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>can&#8217;t<br \/>\ncompare in <span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">beauty<\/span><br \/>\nto the twinkle of <span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">lights<\/span><br \/>\non the &#8220;snow&#8221;, glitter of icicles and the openness that allows you to<br \/>\nsee every ornament throughout the tree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEjx5DLYx47xYG25RXZWpIVdsOJhKleclv82BIIl6mLKYICLzL-etDIzv2Cu_IWAzuVPC1eaEvZ1K53JG-zQik8dHiyZWRnFuwFwoCPvjDdkA4q_Z8GIzQUZdsF2MW6QaWRkl9iSUUMpb90CKYcDV2V0iwAjSS2SRTB3-yILJgP7Z2TB7toZql5K\"\/><br \/>2008 photos were different&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Sassafras is the preferred tree<br \/>\nbecause of the shape of the tree.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>She<br \/>\nmarks the tree in the early spring before it has any leaves on it and when she<br \/>\ncan see the shape very well and then in late fall she will go out and gather<br \/>\nthe tree.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sassafras not only has a nice<br \/>\nfull shape but also provides the strength needed and it is pliable to work with<br \/>\nwhile wrapping.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: SimSun; mso-fareast-language: ZH-CN;\">Some of the tree branches are first reinforced and<br \/>\ntied to the trunk with wire because as it dries out it will weaken.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then the wrapping begins.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The tree is wrapped in strips of white<br \/>\ncotton, not batting as it is too heavy.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>The white lights are wrapped in with the white cotton so that you do not<br \/>\nsee the wires.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>On the 10 foot high, 7<br \/>\nfoot round tree, the wrapping takes 16-17 hours.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This large tree also holds 4,000 old leaded<br \/>\nicicles, which she saves from year to year and 758 ornaments.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\">The <span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">National <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Christmas<\/span><br \/>\nTree Association website lists a history of <span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Christmas<\/span><br \/>\ntrees. According to their history, in the early 1900&#8217;s, over harvesting of<br \/>\nevergreen trees had caused their numbers to dwindle considerably.<br \/>\nConservationists were concerned and magazines began to promote the use of an<br \/>\nartificial &#8220;snow&#8221; covered tree, consisting of a branch of a deciduous<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">tree<\/span> that would be<br \/>\nwrapped in cotton. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"772\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/a\/AVvXsEjmj5TbEgn-0sbA2XD_T_OjKg90QHxC-vTsr0LNE3nYNkq0IruWuIX8ZBAtrU8VRKIt8Y5hYtQaO7F8xoWSj_Q6q-VqRM4ITGWWCeVfAOGLxoH2bPzoObuXukKu7vXp2czLLWaNJedycmmyhNrLC-YG5tLT7F19uxFAwyChYBXUbys-PtNsa1Qg=w579-h772\" width=\"579\"\/><br \/>Ms Repman with one of her trees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><br \/>\nAccording to the <span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">National <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Christmas<\/span><br \/>\nCenter in Paradise, Pa.,<br \/>\nearly settlers would wrap sassafras trees in cotton batting then <span style=\"text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">decorate<\/span><br \/>\nthem with ornaments.
