Fokofpolisiekar’s independent brew, Fokof Lager, has picked up a Silver Pendoring award for its “Sports Drinkers” indoor poster campaign, marking a rare moment where countercultural branding gets recognised by the country’s most established advertising awards. From backyard pineapple-beer jokes in the early 2000s to national retail shelves more than two decades later, the win signals how far the band’s irreverent offshoot has come.

Unlike heritage-heavy beer brands obsessed with medals and machismo, Fokof Lager’s campaign leans into a different truth. Its stripped-back typography and confrontational tone frame “sport” not as elite athleticism, but as the everyday endurance of real life, positioning the lager as a product for people allergic to corporate polish. “Beer sales are more homogeneous and we were excited from day one to see how we could shake up the beer market and act more competitively,” said Jaco “Snakehead” Venter, who manages Fokof Lager’s marketing. Venter approached beer like music: it’s not about technical perfection but about instinct and feeling. That philosophy is what drove the decision to enter the Pendoring Awards in the first place, and what continues to guide the brand’s creative direction .

The Silver Pendoring arrives at a moment when independent alcohol brands face growing pressure, particularly around potential restrictions on alcohol advertising. For Fokof Lager, brand communication isn’t a luxury but a survival tool in a market dominated by multinational players. The project remains a fully hands-on effort from the band itself, with Hunter Kennedy handling copy, Johnny de Ridder contributing musically when needed, Wynand Myburgh managing finances, and Francois van Coke lending support where required. As for what’s next, the plan is characteristically vague: more beer, more ideas, and more noise in a space that could use some Fokof energy.
