In the wallet were a man\u2019s ID and credit cards, about<br \/>\n$250 in cash, and photos of what appeared to be a wife and children. As he was<br \/>\na good Samaritan, Carter put the wallet in a padded envelope and sent it to the<br \/>\nlost and found at the local precinct, though not before transferring the photos<br \/>\nto his own wallet, since he did not have a wife and children of his own.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"><o:p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">*<br \/>\n* *<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"><o:p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">A man in a tuxedo was eating cereal<br \/>\non the subway, raisin bran. He had one of those little boxes, a fun pack,<br \/>\nthey\u2019re called, where you pour milk directly into the box, which is lined with<br \/>\nwax paper and when opened acts as a bowl. He very demurely opened the box,<br \/>\npulling the flaps aside, with a bottle of milk clamped between his legs. He<br \/>\ngrabbed the milk with one hand and with the other rested the box on his knee.<br \/>\nThen, his other hand now free, he opened the bottle and poured some milk onto<br \/>\nhis cereal. He proceeded to eat the raisin bran with a little plastic spoon,<br \/>\nsmiling beatifically, like a little boy enjoying a special treat. Then the<br \/>\ntrain made a sudden jolt, and the man\u2019s cereal and milk went flying all over<br \/>\nthe shirt of the man sitting next to him, whose grim face I had already taken<br \/>\nnote of. Things only got worse from there. A side of me wanted to watch the<br \/>\nwhole thing play out, but, alas, it was my stop.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"><o:p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">*<br \/>\n* *<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"><o:p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The dog was barking at the ceiling<br \/>\nfor what seemed like hours. Was there something upstairs? A sound, a smell,<br \/>\nanother dog? He didn\u2019t hear or smell anything, but he was no dog. He decided to<br \/>\ngo upstairs and knock on the neighbors\u2019 door. He didn\u2019t know them; they had<br \/>\nonly moved in recently, after the death of Mrs. Moran, whose children had sold<br \/>\nthem the apartment. According to one of the other neighbors they were<br \/>\nLithuanian, though he didn\u2019t think that was relevant to the problem at hand. He<br \/>\ntook the stairs, as it was only one flight up, and knocked on the door, which<br \/>\nhad a nameplate that said Kazlauskas. A man opened the door, holding a raw<br \/>\nsteak and baring his canines. \u201cYes, can I help you?\u201d the man, whom he assumed<br \/>\nto be Kazlauskas, barked in a gravelly voice.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><o:p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">*<br \/>\n* *<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><o:p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<br \/><\/span><\/o:p><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>The funeral director gasped when<br \/>\nMrs. Fish requested her husband be wrapped in newspaper. \u201cThat would be highly<br \/>\nirregular,\u201d Mr. Gray told Mrs. Fish.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s not my idea,\u201d she told him.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was his wish. It\u2019s in his will.\u201d<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u201cWell, all right,\u201d Gray said. \u201cI\u2019ve<br \/>\nseen some pretty crazy requests, but this one takes the cake. Still, the<br \/>\ncustomer\u2019s always right, even in death.
