On August 5, 2019, India unilaterally revoked Article 370 of its Constitution, stripping Kashmir of its nominal autonomy. We woke up to the sound of helicopters, drones, and curfew announcements. Tens of thousands of additional Indian troops were brought into the Valley. Spools of razor wire dotted the streets as new checkpoints and barricades emerged. A communications blackout was imposed marked by the suspension of mobile networks, landlines, internet, satellite television, newspapers, and postal services.)<br \/>\nfor my \u201cfieldwork\u201d in Kashmir<\/p>\n<p>Opening scene:<br \/>\na solitary boat in a serene lake<br \/>\n[slow motion]<br \/>\n[rhythmic sound of oars] [water lapping]<br \/>\n[birdsong] [soft breeze]<br \/>\n[a musical rendition of Habba Khatoon\u2019s poetry] ( Habba Khatoon is a 16th-century poet from Kashmir.)<\/p>\n<p>Last scene:<br \/>\nscreen fades to black<br \/>\nan uncanny silence devours sound<br \/>\nas text appears:<br \/>\n<em>Where time stands still<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As the flight<br \/>\nfrom New Delhi lands in Srinagar<br \/>\nwe are instructed to<br \/>\npull down our window shades<br \/>\non the recommendation of the Ministry of Defence\u2014<br \/>\ncurrent situation, security regulations<br \/>\nso <em>on<br \/>\n<\/em>and so<em> forth<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As the plane shudders on touchdown,<br \/>\ntourists and soldiers on flight<br \/>\ncheer, clap, jump<br \/>\n<em>repeat<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Janat e Kashmir\u2014<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Paradise of Kashmir<\/em>,<br \/>\na large screen glows<br \/>\nabove the baggage claim<br \/>\nat Srinagar airport\u2014<br \/>\na military garrison (Established in 1947 by the Indian Air Force, Srinagar Airport includes a civil enclave administered by the Airports Authority of India.)<\/p>\n<p>Two months later,<br \/>\nthe Ministry of Ruins<br \/>\nonce again<br \/>\nransacks our time<br \/>\nseizing its throat<br \/>\nstealing its breath<br \/>\nslashing its heart<br \/>\nuntil it bleeds to stillness<br \/>\nwhile the Imperial Clock keeps striking<\/p>\n<p>In the dispossessed land<br \/>\nit is the usual scenery:<br \/>\na little pixel dinosaur declares<br \/>\n<em>Unable to connect to the internet<br \/>\n<\/em>indefinite curfew<br \/>\nlacerated bodies<br \/>\ndead ends<br \/>\nnight raids<br \/>\nsoundproofing<br \/>\nno signal<br \/>\ncrackdown<br \/>\nsnap<br \/>\ncut<br \/>\nsuspend<br \/>\n<em>repeat<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the dispossessed land<br \/>\nit is the usual scenery:<br \/>\nsilence beaten into a grammar of terror<br \/>\nslashed larynxes<br \/>\ndamaged eardrums<br \/>\non display in glass cabinets<br \/>\nalso known as a Museum of Normalcy<br \/>\nPLEASE DO NOT TOUCH<\/p>\n<p>In the dispossessed land<br \/>\nit is the usual scenery:<br \/>\ndossiers of colonial crimes<br \/>\ntendered as peace treaties<\/p>\n<p>In the dispossessed land<br \/>\nit is the usual scenery:<br \/>\nImperial Clock \/>\nsirens<br \/>\nexplosions<br \/>\nresonating through the city\u2019s sternum<\/p>\n<p><em>Ausl\u00e4nder raus\u2014<\/em>(\u00a0This is a German far-right anti-immigrant slogan.)<em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>Foreigners Out<br \/>\n<\/em>Two teens sing into the night<br \/>\ngliding on a kick scooter<br \/>\nacross my street<\/p>\n<p>I listen to roof tiles<br \/>\ncrashing to the ground<br \/>\nthrough an aluminum rubble chute<br \/>\noutside my window<br \/>\ntremoring through my teeth<br \/>\nmy body<br \/>\nsummoning sounds<br \/>\nshaking my bones,<br \/>\ngrowing up<br \/>\ninside<br \/>\nthe shape of a scream<\/p>\n<p>I listen to police sirens,<br \/>\nemergency announcements<br \/>\nordering evacuation\u2014<br \/>\nan unexploded World War II bomb<br \/>\nnear Heidelberg Central Station<br \/>\nI wander<br \/>\ninto the December night<br \/>\nalive with alarms<br \/>\nshattering the regulatory Ruhezeit\u2014(Ruhezeit, German for \u201cquiet time\u201d: legally enforced quiet hours in Germany.)<br \/>\nrising clamor of uncertainty\u2014<br \/>\nhome<\/p>\n<p>A voice rises<br \/>\ninto the<br \/>\nautumn night wind<br \/>\nin Altstadt<br \/>\nat the student encampment for Palestine<br \/>\nin the university square,<br \/>\nmy hands reach for other hands<br \/>\nfor the first time in a long, long while<\/p>\n<h3>Listen<\/h3>\n<p><audio song<br \/>\ncelebrating unity in diversity<br \/>\nconceived by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting,<br \/>\nfirst telecast in 1988<br \/>\non the 41st Independence Day<br \/>\n\u2014an anthem to rising India<\/p>\n<p>A year later in Kashmir,<br \/>\nsubterranean songs gushed forth<br \/>\nrefusing a coerced collective melody<br \/>\nnationalist unisonance\u2014<\/p>\n<p>In the backs\u2014<br \/>\nit is the usual scenery:<br \/>\nlistening on loop<br \/>\nto a recording you made<br \/>\nwalking home<br \/>\n(the last time I walked home<br \/>\nwas one hundred thirty-eight million, one hundred thirty-two thousand, eight hundred sixty-four seconds ago)<\/p>\n<p>one-minute chorus<br \/>\ncradling my homelessness<br \/>\ntongues in rhythmic recitation<br \/>\nthroats soaring<br \/>\nbodies oscillating<br \/>\nburning<br \/>\nin<br \/>\nwait<br \/>\nhomebound<\/p>\n<p>Inside my bones,<br \/>\nI listen to frequencies<br \/>\nescaping the Noise Controller\u2019s
