Bao Li, a male, is <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/how-can-you-tell-giant-pandas-apart\">unusually talkative<\/a>, often greeting keepers in the morning with a series of bleats. Qing Bao, a female, used to spend much of her time surveying her surroundings from atop a tree, but nowadays, she\u2019s more often found <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/bao-li-qing-bao-and-secrets-summer-panda-life-smithsonians-national-zoo\">roaming between<\/a> her habitat\u2019s indoor and outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p>This year was an eventful one for the duo, who <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/giant-pandas-arrive-smithsonians-national-zoo-and-conservation-biology-institute-china\">arrived<\/a> in Washington, D.C. in October 2024. The Zoo\u2019s previous panda family\u2014mother Mei Xiang, father Tian Tian and son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/help-name-national-zoos-new-panda-cub-180976304\/\">Xiao Qi Ji<\/a>\u2014bid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/the-national-zoos-giant-pandas-bid-washington-dc-farewell-180983209\/\">nation\u2019s capital farewell<\/a> in November 2023, leaving Washington without the beloved black-and-white bears for the first time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/why-the-national-zoo-is-saying-goodbye-to-its-giant-pandas-180982927\/\">23 years<\/a>. Under a new agreement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/smithsonians-national-zoo-and-conservation-biology-institute-extends-giant-panda-agreement\">China Wildlife Conservation Association<\/a> (CWCA), which owns the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-mexico-diplomacy-pandas--f386f8b13bd7bb12c918239f38fcedda\">vast majority<\/a> of pandas held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/26\/china\/china-us-ya-ya-panda-diplomacy-intl-hnk\/index.html\">in captivity<\/a>, Bao Li and Qing Bao will remain at NZCBI <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/two-new-giant-pandas-coming-smithsonians-national-zoo-and-conservation-biology-institute-china\">through April 2034<\/a> in exchange for an annual fee of $1 million. The history of giant pandas at the National Zoo<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/revisit-51-years-of-giant-pandas-at-the-national-zoo-from-beloved-babies-to-fun-snow-180982940\/\">past 53 years<\/a>, the Zoo has hosted ten <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/history-giant-pandas-zoo\">giant pandas<\/a> (not counting cubs that died before being named or shortly after birth).<\/li>\n<li>The Zoo\u2019s first pandas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/local\/daily\/june99\/lingdies92.htm\">Ling-Ling<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/11\/29\/us\/hsing-hsing-the-panda-a-gift-from-mao-dies.html\">Hsing-Hsing<\/a>, arrived in Washington in 1972. After their deaths, the Panda House briefly stood empty before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/local\/2001\/01\/05\/pandas-debut-wednesday\/c638ad8e-c84d-4c7d-9f60-b029e1c99113\/\">welcoming<\/a> Mei Xiang and Tian Tian in 2000.<\/li>\n<li>Mei Xiang gave birth to four cubs who survived past infancy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/learning-from-tai-shan-117770450\/\">Tai Shan<\/a> in 2005, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/keepers-favorite-memories-bao-bao\">Bao Bao<\/a> in 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/bei-beis-most-memorable-moments-zoo\">Bei Bei<\/a> in 2015 and <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonian.com\/2020\/12\/28\/panda-babys-adorable-moments-during-2020\/\">Xiao Qi Ji<\/a> in 2020.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Giant pandas reach <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/giant-panda\">sexual maturity<\/a> between the ages of 4 and 7 but generally don\u2019t breed <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/dcpandas-preparing-pseudopregnancy\">before age 5<\/a>, so 4-year-old Bao Li and Qing Bao won\u2019t be mating anytime soon. If they do have a cub down the road, it will return to China by age 4 to participate in the CWCA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panda.org.cn\/en\/about\/introduction\/\">panda breeding program<\/a>, just like its predecessors.<\/p>\n<p>Whether they\u2019re welcoming visitors in person or captivating animal enthusiasts tuning in via the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/webcams\/panda-cam\">Giant Panda Cam<\/a>, the latest pandas to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/revisit-51-years-of-giant-pandas-at-the-national-zoo-from-beloved-babies-to-fun-snow-180982940\/\">call the Zoo home<\/a> have already left an indelible impact. To celebrate the pair\u2019s first year in Washington, <em>Smithsonian <\/em>magazine has rounded up 14<strong> <\/strong>of the most adorable photos of Bao Li and Qing Bao. As NZCBI\u2019s director, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/about\/staff\/brandie-smith\">Brandie Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/smithsonian-national-zoo-giant-panda-make-public-debut-january-24-180985263\/?no-cache\">told the magazine<\/a> last year, \u201cThere are pandas in other zoos around the world, but they are iconic with the National Zoo. (Once the pair are old enough to begin breeding, they\u2019ll start spending more time together, albeit only during a brief window in the spring when Qing Bao is <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/giant-panda-estrus-faqs\">in heat, or estrus<\/a>.) It can be tricky to tell the two apart, but keeper Mariel Lally has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/blogs\/national-zoo-conservation-biology-institute\/2025\/01\/14\/how-can-you-tell-the-national-zoos-giant-pandas-apart\/\">shared some advice<\/a> for distinguishing the bears.<\/p>\n<p>Qing Bao is smaller than Bao Li. \u201cShe\u2019s petite for a panda her age,\u201d Lally said earlier this year. Her cheeks are fluffier than her male counterpart\u2019s, and she has two dark patches that stand out against the white fur on her left hip. Bao Li, meanwhile, has wider eye patches than Qing Bao. The band of black fur on his back is thicker than his future mate\u2019s, and it pinches in the middle. Though Bao Li tried to catch her attention by calling out through a set of mesh screens known as \u201chowdy\u201d windows, Qing Bao \u201cpaid little attention to the panda next door,\u201d as Lally and assistant curator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/the-end-of-an-era-as-a-zookeeper-and-her-giant-panda-say-goodbye\/2019\/11\/12\/e935a962-0499-11ea-ac12-3325d49eacaa_story.html\">Laurie Thompson<\/a> wrote in a May <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/bleats-bonds-early-signs-affection-between-dcs-giant-pandas\">blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That changed in mid-March, when Qing Bao started exhibiting behaviors associated with estrus, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2351989420309732\">marking her scent<\/a> around her habitat, splashing in pools to cool down and playing with toys more frequently. \u201cShe seemed more restless, energetic and aloof,\u201d Lally and Thompson recalled. Bao Li responded gleefully, and over the next several weeks, the pair became all but inseparable. Though they couldn\u2019t physically touch each other through the mesh, they both held their paws up against the screen and displayed clear signs of interest in each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe placed bamboo and shoots next to the windows so they could watch each other while they ate,\u201d wrote Lally and Thompson. \u201cIf one of them walked away, the other ran over and called for them. As Lally <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/bao-li-qing-bao-and-secrets-summer-panda-life-smithsonians-national-zoo\">said in July<\/a>, the pandas\u2019 ideal temperature is \u201c65 degrees Fahrenheit, with a breeze\u201d\u2014far lower than the <a href=\"https:\/\/weatherspark.com\/y\/20957\/Average-Weather-in-Washington-D.C.;-United-States-Year-Round\">typical temperature<\/a> in Washington during the summer.<\/p>\n<p>During these sweltering months, Bao Li stuck to a routine that was heavy on social interaction and playtime. On September 12, she feasted on a tiered birthday cake made from diluted beet, pineapple and apple juices. Topped with a giant numeral \u201c4,\u201d the cake featured shredded carrots, sweet potato pur\u00e9e, blueberries, strawberries and peaches as decoration. Qing Bao also played with a new navy blue ball and examined a series of pink, purple and yellow enrichment boxes. Tuckered out from the excitement, she then retreated to a tree and took a nap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been really fun to see her personality emerge,\u201d Thompson said in September. \u201cShe was very reserved and cautious when she arrived, but now she is much more confident. She\u2019s also become more interested in interacting with keepers. During the closure, NZCBI staff <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/news\/government-shutdown-faqs\">continued to care<\/a> for more than <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/about\">2,200 animals<\/a>, including Qing Bao, who underwent a routine checkup on October 22. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/giant-panda-qing-bao-gets-checkup\">November blog post<\/a> from the Zoo, the bear is \u201cin very good health,\u201d with a nutritionist determining that she\u2019s \u201cin ideal body condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During panda checkups, NZCBI veterinarians measure the animal\u2019s blood pressure, take a blood sample, and collect radiographs and other scans. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HQZ3-OD0ml0\">Bao Bao<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/watch-giant-pandas-other-zoo-animals-frolic-snow-180976899\/\">Xiao Qi Ji<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vj9ra-IHtxg\">Mei Xiang and Tian Tian<\/a>, the bears love to slide down snow-covered hills and stomp through the powdery landscape. Bao Li and Qing Bao are no exception to this trend: When they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/blogs\/national-zoo-conservation-biology-institute\/2025\/01\/08\/see-how-the-pandas-and-other-animals-enjoyed-a-chilly-snow-day\/\">first experienced snow<\/a> in their new home in January, the pair \u201ctook the opportunity to climb, dive and somersault across their wintry habitats,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/news\/see-how-pandas-and-other-animals-enjoyed-chilly-snow-day\">blog post<\/a>. After 7 p.m., the feed plays a prerecorded video of the previous 12 hours, drawing on footage captured by <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/giant-panda-faqs\">40 separate cameras<\/a>.
