I struggle with arguments in my head.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once again, I was shouting in my mind the verse\u00a0God revealed to me years ago:\u00a0\u201cWe demolish arguments and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to obey Christ.\u201d\u00a02<\/em>nd<\/sup><\/em>\u00a0Corinthians 10:4b-5 HCSB<\/em><\/p>\n

This spiritual warfare\u00a0happens when I\u00a0find myself in\u00a0strenuous situations involving others.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In my mind, I lash out with powerful pronouncements that\u00a0always leave\u00a0my opponent speechless.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I know who I am\u00a0pleasing\u00a0when I do this. It certainly isn\u2019t the One I want to please.\u00a0Yet, I found myself doing it again.<\/p>\n

I am the coordinator of our church\u2019s women\u2019s Bible studies.\u00a0When assigning leaders to our fall study, I prayed, \u201cLord,\u00a0You\u00a0are in charge of\u00a0this study.\u00a0Keep\u00a0me out of the way.\u00a0Only obedience to You.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

I then\u00a0practiced what\u00a0was done in many cases in the Bible to determine God\u2019s sovereignty\u00a0over\u00a0human choice. <\/p>\n

Some examples\u00a0are:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cand\u00a0Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord. And there Joshua apportioned the land to the people of Israel\u00a0to each his portion.\u201d(\u00a0Joshua 18:10\u00a0ESV)<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.\u201d\u00a0(Acts 1:26\u00a0ESV)<\/p>\n

I\u00a0cast lots.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My modern-day version of this was writing each leader\u2019s name on a separate piece of paper and placing them in a jar. <\/p>\n

After shaking it, I pulled out two,\u00a0and those were the two chosen to co-lead a small group. After viewing\u00a0the results,\u00a0I knew I needed to call one of the leaders,\u00a0Cathy.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0while back, she asked\u00a0not\u00a0to\u00a0be grouped with\u00a0Jane\u00a0because\u00a0Jane\u00a0got on her nerves. <\/p>\n

When\u00a0Cathy\u00a0found out this was the prayerful pick, she responded, \u201cOk, maybe this is something God wants me to work on.\u201d <\/p>\n

Little did I know\u00a0there was\u00a0trouble\u00a0brewing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jane\u00a0is suffering from\u00a0hearing\u00a0loss.\u00a0I discovered she would often repeat what someone else said. We had many discussions about this in the past. She said she could not afford hearing aides.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was Jane\u2019s\u00a0turn to lead the small group. <\/p>\n

The next day,\u00a0I received a long email from Cathy detailing how Jane spoke way too much without allowing adequate time for discussion. <\/p>\n

She also repeated, not\u00a0just\u00a0what others said, but her own comments\u00a0over and over. <\/p>\n

I contacted\u00a0a trusted\u00a0participant who confirmed this was true.\u00a0I shared this\u00a0with our pastor.\u00a0He agreed\u00a0we needed\u00a0to ask\u00a0Jane\u00a0to step away from leading.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also suggested we have a meeting with all involved.<\/p>\n

The next\u00a0day, I walked into\u00a0Jane and Cathy\u2019s\u00a0classroom. I needed to let Jane know I wanted to speak with her after our study.\u00a0They didn\u2019t notice me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cathy\u00a0was\u00a0snapping\u00a0at Jane because she\u00a0wasn\u2019t organizing the papers the way\u00a0Cathy\u00a0wanted. <\/p>\n

I was already a bit suspicious there were\u00a0adverse\u00a0issues on both sides.\u00a0This confirmed it.<\/p>\n

Hence,\u00a0my imagined\u00a0arguments started again.\u00a0I\u00a0spewed harsh words towards cruel Cathy who had the nerve to point her judgmental finger at Jane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And once again,\u00a0I\u00a0repeated\u00a0the\u00a02nd<\/sup> Corinthians\u00a0passage\u00a0over and over and over\u2026<\/p>\n

Only with God\u2019s help,\u00a0I\u00a0gathered my composure and\u00a0still met with Jane after the study.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She\u00a0was informed she\u00a0needed to step away until we could deal with the hearing issue. <\/p>\n

I\u00a0shared\u00a0I was concerned it was getting worse,\u00a0and it may\u00a0be affecting her cognitively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, she cried.\u00a0She also said she drew the line at it being a cognitive issue. <\/p>\n

She described how she may take a while to process something she didn\u2019t quite understand, and that was why she was missing some of the conversation. <\/p>\n

She agreed to meet with our pastor, Cathy, and me after\u00a0our next\u00a0Bible study.<\/p>\n

After prayer, I knew I\u00a0needed\u00a0to\u00a0carefully\u00a0confront Cathy about what I witnessed\u00a0the\u00a0previous study. <\/p>\n

She owned up to it and said she knew she needed to be more compassionate and patient. She also emailed an apology to Jane and\u00a0CC\u2019d\u00a0the pastor and me.<\/p>\n

Before the meeting, I\u00a0again<\/em>\u00a0contemplated potential scenarios. <\/p>\n

My imagination\u00a0kicked the angry arguments into full gear.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And each time\u00a0in my mind, I drew a powerful punch with\u00a0the last crushing\u00a0word. <\/p>\n

Thank God for His Holy Spirit who,\u00a0once again, placed\u00a0that verse\u00a0in my mind.\u00a0You can guess what I did driving to the meeting\u00a0\u2013 bellowing\u00a0this dependable verse\u00a0over and over.<\/p>\n

Only our Creator gets\u00a0the credit for how smoothly the meeting went. <\/p>\n

Our trusted pastor heard all sides. <\/p>\n

He thanked Cathy for her honesty\u00a0about\u00a0being impatient and acknowledged her genuine concern\u00a0for\u00a0Jane\u2019s ability to lead. <\/p>\n

He also certified Jane\u2019s sincere heart for teaching God\u2019s\u00a0Word while affirming she needed to step away for a while and deal with the hearing loss. <\/p>\n

Of course, Jane cried.\u00a0She\u00a0also\u00a0agreed\u00a0to it.<\/p>\n

In private, our\u00a0pastor\u00a0graciously\u00a0offered\u00a0that\u00a0the church\u00a0would\u00a0pay for the hearing aids.\u00a0Jane thanked him and made the appointment.<\/p>\n

For\u00a0our winter and spring\u00a0Bible studies, Jane\u00a0still participated even though she couldn\u2019t lead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She could have stayed away and allowed anger and hurt to fester. Her regular attendance\u00a0revealed her genuine trust in the One who guards us in our struggles. (Ps 91:11)\u00a0<\/p>\n

I am pleased to\u00a0share\u00a0she is\u00a0currently\u00a0one of our leaders.\u00a0In our evaluations, many shared how they love her sincerity and commitment.<\/p>\n

When I reflect on all of this,\u00a0I\u00a0am thankful God kept my mouth shut when it needed to stay shut. This is what God taught me:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Putting those two leaders together was\u00a0definitely\u00a0His\u00a0plan.\u00a0(Jer 29:11)\u00a0He knew there was potential\u00a0trouble\u00a0brewing. It needed to be addressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0If I\u00a0gave\u00a0in to the\u00a0temptations\u00a0to argue, it\u00a0would\u00a0have been ugly. Only God Himself destroyed those\u00a0\u201chigh-minded\u201d thoughts\u00a0that\u00a0stood against His great knowledge.\u00a0(2\u00a0<\/sup>Cor 10:5)<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0I was reminded when it comes to any area of ministry \u2013 witnessing, serving, leading, anddefinitely\u00a0writing-\u00a0God allows\u00a0struggle.\u00a0(Phil 1:29-30)<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Struggle\u00a0points to\u00a0the\u00a0powerful\u00a0potential for growth, compassion, healing,\u00a0and strength.\u00a0(Ps 46:1)<\/p>\n

What a blessing to have His\u00a0Word!\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is a reason we pray and read and put to\u00a0memory\u00a0some of the passages. <\/p>\n

God uses them to\u00a0grow us. <\/p>\n

We are no longer\u00a0captive to our\u00a0feelings or\u00a0thoughts. He\u00a0knows struggle\u00a0frees us to grow in obedience.<\/p>\n
