Like many people, our
\nholiday season is filled with cheer.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And
\nit is filled with the <\/span>sounds<\/u> of the holidays – the sounds of giggles and
\nexcitement, the sounds of wrapping paper ripping\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

But unlike<\/i> most
\npeople, our season is also filled with different sounds. It is filled with:<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The sounds of
\nfootsteps going up and down our wooden steps <\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The sounds of
\nadults patiently explaining colors and shapes and numbers\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 to\u00a0<\/span>children<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>And last but most
\ncommon \u2013 the sounds of small, oddly shaped wooden doors opening and closing and
\nopening and closing and opening and closing\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Those are the sounds of our
\n<\/i>season, because everyday between December 1st<\/sup> \u2013 December 24th<\/sup>,
\nour porch is filled with visitors for a special event.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

From morning til
\nnighttime, people stream onto our porch to make their daily visit to the life-size
\nCOUNTDOWN CALENDAR.\u00a0 <\/span>And each day, behind
\na brightly colored numbered door, they find a special treat.\u00a0 <\/span>Some days it is candy, other days a small
\ntoy.\u00a0 <\/span>But every day it is something<\/u>,
\nand every day is filled with the anticipation of what they will find.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The Countdown Calendar has
\nbecome a tradition in our neighborhood.\u00a0 <\/span>Like
\nso many of our projects, it started with a wild idea and has become a community
\nstaple.\u00a0 <\/span>I envisioned the calendar and David
\ndesigned and built it with love (measuring many, many times to get it just
\nright). We are not sure how many Christmases we have celebrated with it, but we
\nhave also used the calendar to count down to other special events \u2013 an election,
\nValentine\u2019s Day, an inauguration, Eid Al-Fitr\u2026\u00a0
\n<\/span>At Kindness Activist we believe you can countdown to anything<\/i>!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

And it is so FUN!\u00a0 <\/span>Many visitors come every day<\/u> to make
\nsure they don\u2019t miss a treat.\u00a0 <\/span>We average
\n55 \u2013 65 visitors a day.\u00a0 <\/span>Some days the
\ngifts are wrapped, making them extra special!!\u00a0
\n<\/span>This year 13 neighbors volunteered to wrap gifts ranging from movie
\ntheater size boxes of candy to balls filled with slime to honey sticks to wind
\nup walking toys and more.\u00a0 <\/span>We have at
\nleast 50 \u201cmain treats\u201d per day and plenty of back-up treats for overflow,
\nbecause on nice weather days upwards of 70 people come.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The Countdown Calendar is
\ngood for the community in so many ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Seeing the
\nbrightly colored contraption on our porch signals the start of the holiday
\nseason<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>It gives kids and
\nfamilies a destination to go to every day<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>It helps teach
\nshapes, numbers, and colors!\u00a0 <\/span>I can\u2019t
\ncount the number of times in December I found myself out on the porch talking
\nto toddlers saying things like, \u201cOh!\u00a0
\n<\/span>Today is day 5.\u00a0 <\/span>It is a YELLOW
\ndoor with a RED handle.\u00a0 <\/span>It is shaped
\nlike a TRIANGLE (gesturing drawing a triangle in the air).\u00a0 <\/span>With enough patience and time those kids can
\nfind it independently.<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>It is an excuse
\nfor visitors to get out into the fresh air each day<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>It provides a
\nbuild up to the \u201cmain events\u201d of the month<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>It provides
\nexercise for many guests who bike or walk over<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>It introduces
\npassersby to Kindness Activist and our work (it often draws in curious strangers,
\nespecially at night when the light is shining on the bright colors)<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>It is a reward
\nfor some families \u2013 if the child has good behavior for the day, they get to
\ncome to the calendar<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>And finally, the
\nmost obvious \u2013 it gives people a special treat each day<\/i>!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Countdown Calendar
\nmight look like an easy task, but it is actually a huge undertaking.\u00a0 <\/span>Because it happens at the same time as the
\nSanta Project, I have learned to prepare way in advance!\u00a0 <\/span>This year we started shopping for treats just
\nbefore Halloween, and kind neighbors wrapped and returned gifts to be used
\nmid-November. <\/span><\/p>\n

The hardest part of the project
\nis keeping the calendar stocked<\/u>.\u00a0
\n<\/span>We only put out a few treats at a time for fear a visitor will break the
\ngolden rule and take more than one (I am looking at you<\/u>, middle school
\nkids walking past after school\u2026).\u00a0 <\/span>Each
\ntime the treats run out we need to put in more.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Repeat.\u00a0 <\/span>Repeat.\u00a0 <\/span>Repeat.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Repeat from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed.\u00a0 <\/span>Kids who come every year know that if they find
\nthe cubby of the day empty, they are welcome to knock on the door and let us
\nknow (let\u2019s just say we get a lot of knocks and doorbell rings during those 24
\ndays\u2026).\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

But even though it is a
\nlot of work, I love<\/b> doing this project!\u00a0
\n<\/span>Kids are so happy<\/i> to get a little treat!!\u00a0 <\/span>One special friend is a lover of chocolate
\nand young enough to be delighted by everything in life.\u00a0 <\/span>To see his eyes shine and hear him squeal, \u201cIT
\nIS CHOCOLATE!\u201d when opening a Hershey kiss one night was hilariously
\nmagical.\u00a0 <\/span>And the manners<\/i>!\u00a0 <\/span>Oh my goodness, we hear so many, \u201cThank you
\nMr. David!\u201d and \u201cThank you Miss Susan\u201d s all month \u2013 so sweet. <\/span><\/p>\n
