That theater is currently screening \u201cZootopia 2\u201d 27 times a day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"editor-intro row\">\n<h2 class=\"title text-center trinity-skip-it\">Why We Wrote This<\/h2>\n<p class=\"trinity-skip-it\"><span>Disney has struck gold with the \u201cZootopia\u201d franchise, breaking box-office records in one of the most profitable but challenging movie markets in the world: China. How did they do it?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAll my friends are going to see it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cZootopia 2\u201d craze has produced impressive box office numbers. Since opening on Nov. 26, the film has raked in more than $444 million, making it the highest-grossing imported animated film ever released in China. Over the past decade, domestic-made films have captured an increasing share of the market, edging out Hollywood offerings. That reflects Beijing\u2019s tight control over which foreign films are released in China and the government\u2019s promotion of patriotic blockbusters, such as the \u201cWolf Warrior\u201d action series and \u201cThe Battle at Lake Changjin,\u201d which depicts heroic Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the Korean War.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHollywood has not done well recently\u201d in China, says Stanley Rosen, professor of political science at the University of Southern California and an expert in Chinese film.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection anonymous\"\/>\n<p>Many Hollywood films are barred by Chinese film regulators, or censored \u2013 leading some in the U.S. film industry to rethink the Chinese market altogether. Makers of the U.S. films \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d (2022) and \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d (2021), for example, rejected Chinese censorship and still made $1.4 billion and $1.9 billion, respectively, in box-office sales globally outside China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce it was clear these films were not going to be accepted for China, they had a completely different marketing strategy &#8230; and did extremely well,\u201d Dr. Rosen says. \u201cThat helped to convince Hollywood they don\u2019t really need China so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beijing, for its part, remains eager to remind Hollywood of its status as the second-biggest film market in the world. The country currently accounts for about 45% of \u201cZootopia 2\u201d\u2019s worldwide box-office sales. <\/p>\n<div class=\"in_story_embed embed-object embed-image \">\n<figure class=\"embed ezc-image \">\n<picture>\n\t\t\t<!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;\"><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 40em)\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2025\/12\/1211_OZOOTOPIA_crowd.jpg?alias=standard_600x400 1x, https:https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2025\/12\/1211_OZOOTOPIA_crowd.jpg?alias=standard_900x600 2x\"\/><source media=\"(max-width: 64em)\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2025\/12\/1211_OZOOTOPIA_crowd.jpg?alias=standard_900x600\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 64em)\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2025\/12\/1211_OZOOTOPIA_crowd.jpg?alias=standard_1200x800\"\/><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2025\/12\/1211_OZOOTOPIA_crowd.jpg?alias=standard_1200x800\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\" lazyload\" data-ratio=\"cropped\" alt=\"\"\/>\n\t\t<\/picture>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"image-data\">\n<div class=\"caption-bar text-wrapper  \">\n<p>Moviegoers watch &#8220;Zootopia 2&#8221; on the film&#8217;s release day in Shanghai, Nov. 26, 2025.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Still, other Hollywood films will have a hard time matching the enthusiasm surrounding \u201cZootopia 2.\u201d Chinese moviegoers are even bringing their dogs and other pets to special showings in several cities \u2013 spurring social media posts featuring furry friends and their owners bouncing to the theme song \u201cZoo\u201d by Shakira.<\/p>\n<p>So why the frenzy over \u201cCrazy Animal Town\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>One reason is the popularity of the first \u201cZootopia,\u201d released in 2016.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection anonymous\"\/>\n<p>Mr. Li saw that film when he was about 7 years old and has never forgotten it. \u201cThe last time I was so excited, so happy,\u201d he raves, adding that \u201cthis one is a significant improvement in quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection\"\/>\n<p>Moreover, a generation of young people captivated by \u201cZootopia\u201d nearly a decade ago now have children of their own and want to bring them to see the sequel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really liked the first one, so when the second one came out, I wanted to bring my child,\u201d says Zhang Rui, a telecommunications company worker who saw the movie with her 6-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Capitalizing on that success, Disney opened the world\u2019s only \u201cZootopia land\u201d at the Shanghai Disney Resort in late 2023, attracting flocks of fans. \u201cEveryone watched the first movie, then went to Disneyland to play at [Zootopia], and is now watching the sequel,\u201d says Ms. Zhang.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection\"\/>\n<p>Disney is also marketing \u201cZootopia 2\u201d in China with special short preview films and a \u201cZootopia\u201d-themed aircraft \u2013 the Disney-Zootopia Express \u2013 unveiled as part of the China Eastern Airlines fleet.
