Gingerbread is an old-fashioned dessert bread made with ginger, spices, black treacle, and golden syrup, in the European style.<\/p>\n
Gingerbread is my recipe of the day with the blogging group Bread Bakers. We group together monthly to post on a common theme. This month our topic is dessert breads. Glad you could join us!<\/p>\n You may be familiar with gingerbread as cookies, which can be done in crisp, or chewy styles. These are a European tradition, especially in Sweden and also in Poland and Germany.<\/p>\n It\u2019s believed to have been brought to Europe by monks in the Tenth Century and over time gained much popularity, to eventually becoming a Court favorite in Elizabethan times.<\/p>\n This version is more of a quick bread like a casual cake, which you may top with whipped cream, lemon curd, or vanilla custard, whichever you like. It\u2019s often served at Christmas and gives a feel of British Christmas time, Dickens, and a Christmas Carol. It can make quick work of holiday dessert instead of a more elaborate and involved English pudding or fancy torte or layer cake.<\/p>\n Pumpkin Gingerbread combines two of the best holiday flavors into one moist and flavorful spiced Bundt cake.<\/p>\n Sugarplum Muffins are filled with holiday spice, a hint of brandy, and a dollop of fruity jam for a Christmas themed breakfast treat.<\/p>\n Lemon Cranberry Scones are light, airy, fully of zesty lemon and dried cranberries, topped with crystal sugar for that bit of extra crunch.<\/p>\n Pumpkin Spice Pull-Apart Loaf bakes up cinnamon rolls with a sticky caramelized pumpkin sauce and crunchy pecans in a naughty breakfast treat.<\/p>\n This makes the perfect snack or simple dessert for those watching calories.
