The Arabic Staircase (Escalera \u00c1rabe) hike in El Chorro is one of the most beautiful hikes I\u2019ve taken in Andalusia. Perhaps because I didn\u2019t expect it to be such an amazing trail, or perhaps because it\u2019s simply wonderfully peaceful compared to the busy Caminito del Rey. The ancient staircase leads high into the mountains and offers stunning views of the valley and El Chorro\u2019s reservoirs. In this article, I\u2019ll tell you everything you need to know about the Escalera \u00c1rabe, or Arabic Stairs, hiking trail in Andalusia.<\/p>\n

What are the Arabic Stairs<\/h5>\n<\/p>\n

The Arabic Stairs are steps carved into the rocks above El Chorro, believed to have been constructed during the Moorish period (between the 8th and 15th centuries). They served as a connecting route between Andalusian villages and fields in the rugged landscape. Today, they form a unique hiking trail, part of longer trails in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes nature reserve.<\/p>\n

The Arabic Stairs hike isn\u2019t long, but it is challenging due to the elevation gain. Expect to hike for about 2-3 hours, depending on your pace and how much time you take to enjoy the views and take photos.<\/p>\n

    Along the way, you\u2019ll walk along trails with loose stones, through coniferous forests, and, of course, over the historic steps themselves. The highlight of the hike is the viewpoint at the top, where you have a panoramic view of the Ardales-El Chorro reservoirs and the village of El Chorro below.<\/p>\n

    How to get to the trailhead<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s best to park your car in the village of El Chorro. There\u2019s not much parking, so make sure you choose a spot where you\u2019re legally allowed to park.<\/p>\n

    Follow the paved road uphill, which eventually turns into a wide dirt track. Along the way, you\u2019ll likely pass many campers and climbers who came to climb the the El Chorro walls. Once you reach the rock face, you\u2019ll see a sign saying \u201cEscaleras \u00c1rabes\u201d (unfortunately, it\u2019s covered in graffiti, as the photo below shows).<\/p>\n

    Along the way on the Arabic Stairs<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/p>\n

    From the moment you enter the trail here, it becomes a real hike. The gravel road becomes a hiking trail here, and on a sunny day there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll see climbers. Follow this trail all the way to the top, where you\u2019ll enjoy stunning views. With a bit of luck, you\u2019ll see vultures circling overhead.<\/p>\n

    Once at the top, you descend towards the hinterland of El Chorro, past an old estate and through coniferous forests. After the initial descent, the path widens and becomes less steep, eventually returning to the gravel road, which you follow back to El Chorro.<\/p>\n

    What to bring on your walk<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/p>\n

    Absolutely essential are plenty of water, snacks, and sturdy walking shoes. I hiked this trail twice, both times in January, when it was still relatively cool. In summer, there\u2019s little protection from the sun, so be sure to bring plenty of drinking water and try not to hike during the hottest part of the day.<\/p>\n
