I
\nmiss a custom I created for myself when living in Southern California. New
\nYear\u2019s Eve parties left me wanting some more meaningful way of observing the
\npassing of an old year and the welcome of a new year. I did not want to \u201cpray
\nin\u201d the new year as we did in my Baptist church with us kids keeping one eye
\nopen to see the sanctuary clock silently clap its hands together on the number
\n12.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But
\nthe ticking of a clock or the descent of a ball in Times Square felt
\nartificial, so I began watching the sun set as I walked along the beach in
\nSanta Monica every New Year\u2019s Eve. I would spend the time revisiting the events
\nof the past year and imagining what the new year might bring, thanking God for
\nthe good and the bad as well as the possibilities. It was something I could do
\nalone, well before the parties. And it felt more natural.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This
\nbit of shoreline is the sanctuary where, in college, I ruminated on my
\nsexuality, spirituality, and call to ministry. This is where I thought I\u2019d like
\nto be reincarnated as a seagull so I could stay near the shore and see my
\nfriends on the beach occasionally! This is where I stumbled onto a gay meeting
\nplace long before I knew about gay bars. This is where, on a day off from my
\nchurch work, I would do a long run and work out on the outdoor gymnastic bars.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This
\nis a walk I\u2019ve shared with many friends, including some of you, and others you
\nmight know, such as John Boswell, Isabel Rogers, and Malcolm Boyd. This is the walk
\nthat Henri Nouwen declined, insisting instead that we sit down on my sofa and
\n\u201chave a really good talk\u201d!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This
\nis where I walked weekly on Thursday evenings with a partner to share whatever
\nwas on our minds and hearts. This is where we walked one Easter after worship,
\nending up at Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy\u2019s hangout, the S. S.
\nFriendship, bumping into an old friend there whose partner we learned had died
\nthe previous week, who gave me the Easter message I needed to hear, \u201cHe died in
\nmy arms. I felt him leave his body. That\u2019s why I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll see him again.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This
\nis where I took my mom and her dog for her last walk along the shore a few
\nweeks before she died, where she mischievously chose an ice cream cone over
\nlunch. And this is where at least some of my ashes will be scattered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though
\nI live far from that shore now, I go there often.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There
\nis no lighthouse there, but in college I composed this poem using the metaphor,
\nwhich feels all the more apt in later life:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>To Be the Sea<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The sea beside, I stand alone,<\/span><\/p>\n

By seasons, wait and search<\/span><\/p>\n

To be discovered and to discover <\/span><\/p>\n

In boundless quest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sea has all at any time\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

No search nor wait.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At most a lighthouse<\/span><\/p>\n

Can beam an instant<\/span><\/p>\n

Before bowing to the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nparticular post. FeedBurner has announced it will discontinue all subscription
\nservices sometime in July, the occasion for my timing. It has been a pleasure
\nwriting this blog, but now, I believe, is a time for silence, something I
\nconsidered when writing the Zen series<\/a>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I
\nassure you I am well, content, and thankful to God for this extension of my
\nministry. Thank you for your interest, comments, correspondence, and
\ncontributions. I am grateful to Metropolitan Community Churches for recognizing
\nthis blog as an \u201cEmerging Ministry\u201d and ProgressiveChristianity.org for
\nreposting many of my reflections<\/a>, as well as the dozens of Facebook pages that
\nallowed me to provide links to particular posts. I am grateful for the free
\nservices of Blogspot, Google, Facebook, and the delivery service, FeedBurner. I
\nam grateful for artist and friend Becki Jayne Harrelson and my husband Wade
\nJones for their technical and moral support.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

To date, the blog has had 512,000 visits, a count that does not
\ninclude almost 500 free weekly subscribers. Once donations were possible, the
\nhighest annual income ever was $2,000.<\/span>\u00a0<\/i>Subscriptions have always
