The idea of a digital asset with no government backing, no physical form, and no established role as a medium of exchange felt at best speculative and, at worst, similar to a Ponzi-like financial scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Although my skepticism about crypto as a <em>true<\/em> currency hasn\u2019t changed, the market clearly disagrees. Prices have surged, collapsed, and surged again. Bitcoin alone jumped more than 35% this year to above $126,000 before erasing the gains just as quickly. Markets speak, even if we don\u2019t always agree with the message.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is Cryptocurrency Actually a Currency?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To determine whether cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin can truly be considered \u201ccurrency,\u201d you need to go back to the basic definition.<\/p>\n<h4>A <strong>currency<\/strong> is:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>An officially recognized method of payment<\/li>\n<li>A medium of exchange used to price goods and services<\/li>\n<li>Stable enough to facilitate everyday commerce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on this definition, does Bitcoin qualify?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><strong> It\u2019s Not Used to Price Goods and Services<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Very few businesses price their products in Bitcoin or any other crypto. How could they when the value can swing 10\u201320% within days? A shopkeeper or restaurant cannot operate with that kind of volatility.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong> It\u2019s Not Used in Traditional Financial Transactions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Loans, bonds, mortgages, stock purchases are priced in fiat currencies, not Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong> Bitcoin does not function as a practical currency. Instead, it acts more like a speculative asset or digital commodity.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>So Why Is Bitcoin in Demand? This stark contrast highlights that Bitcoin\u2019s safe-haven appeal is more narrative-driven than proven.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Has Bitcoin\u2019s Role Evolved?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yes.
