Celebration was in the air. Friends overdue for a wine-tasting and the news that Whine and Cheers for Wine <\/a>had cracked the TOP 100 WINE BLOGS<\/strong><\/em> by Feedspot<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Best 100 Wine Blogs, Websites And Newsletters To Follow in 2019. \"Wine <\/em><\/p>\n

The stage set; wine glasses, note pads, decanters, Coravin<\/a>, glass identifiers etc. We were even ready for possible pairings; cheeses, charcuterie, nuts, and chocolates along with water crackers for palate cleansing. I say \u201cpossible\u201d pairings because as I told the parties involved: \u201cthis is all about the wine\u201d.\u00a0 We may pair, we may not. Eventually we did, but not before spending a long time getting to know the wines individually and comparatively.\u00a0\"Hesperian<\/p>\n

\"Note<\/em><\/p>\n

Hesperian Wines<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>come with quite the pedigree thanks to winemaker Philippe Langner<\/a> and his hands-on experiences from Bordeaux to South Africa and now California with a Rothschild<\/em> influence here or there.<\/p>\n

From Hesperian Wines:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

California\u2019s\u00a0 persistent\u00a0 call\u00a0 is\u00a0 an\u00a0 inspiration\u00a0 for\u00a0 the\u00a0 name\u00a0 for\u00a0 his\u00a0 domaine.\u00a0 Hesperian,\u00a0 or\u00a0 \u201cOne\u00a0 of\u00a0 The\u00a0 West,\u201d\u00a0 is\u00a0 a\u00a0 name\u00a0 that\u00a0 invokes\u00a0 the\u00a0 mythical\u00a0 garden\u00a0 of\u00a0 Hesperides,\u00a0 a\u00a0 blissful\u00a0 twilight\u00a0 orchard\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 west\u00a0 where\u00a0 Hercules\u00a0 once\u00a0 tricked\u00a0 Atlas\u00a0 into\u00a0 helping\u00a0 him\u00a0 complete\u00a0 his\u00a0 eleventh\u00a0 labor.Today\u00a0 Philippe\u00a0 has\u00a0 chosen\u00a0 to\u00a0 make\u00a0 his\u00a0 home\u00a0 and\u00a0 his\u00a0 life\u2019s\u00a0 work\u00a0 in\u00a0 one\u00a0 place:\u00a0 a\u00a0 steep,\u00a0 rocky,\u00a0 14-acre\u00a0 vineyard\u00a0 named\u00a0 \u201cKitoko\u201d,\u00a0 the\u00a0 Congolese\u00a0 Lingala\u00a0 word\u00a0 for\u00a0 \u201cbeautiful.\u201d\u00a0 This\u00a0 is\u00a0 the\u00a0 place\u00a0 he \u00a0has\u00a0 chosen\u00a0 to\u00a0 fulfill\u00a0 his\u00a0 vision,\u00a0 combining\u00a0 his\u00a0 exacting\u00a0 knowledge\u00a0 of\u00a0 viticulture\u00a0 and\u00a0 his\u00a0 constant\u00a0 quest\u00a0 for\u00a0 precision\u2014indeed\u00a0 perfection\u2014in\u00a0 winemaking.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Hesperian<\/em><\/p>\n

As some of my\u00a0Whine and Cheers<\/em> followers may know, I prefer to know as little as possible about a wine prior to a private tasting. In a way I enjoy the discovery aspect of the relationship we are about to build.\u00a0 With the history or backstory hopefully\u00a0 sealing the deal.\u00a0 Leaving me wanting more and looking forward to a second date.<\/p>\n

Hearing myself as I write about my passion and the romance behind it I have come to realize that there are wines you date and wines you marry. I have now learned:\u00a0\u00a0Hesperian Wines<\/strong>\u00a0are the marrying kind.<\/p>\n

Two wines. Both from Hesperian <\/strong>and wine-maker\u00a0Philippe Lagner<\/em>, both 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, and both from the 2015 vintage. Available through their web-site and via Club Membership.<\/a>\u00a0 How do the wines differ? The Hesperian Napa Valley ($100)\u00a0<\/strong>was created by combining wines (50\/50)\u00a0 from Coombsville<\/em> and Kitoko Vineyard<\/em> on Atlas Peak. The Hesperian Kitoko Vineyard<\/strong>\u00a0($150)<\/strong> is sourced entirely from the fourteen acre\u00a0Kitoko Vineyard<\/em>. Only 300 cases of each were produced.<\/p>\n\n

-Hesperian Napa Valley notes<\/strong>;<\/h3>\n

Bold nose with new wood [oak] at forefront and a dark fruit background. In addition on the palate our descriptors included; spices (black pepper),\u00a0 leather (even more so on the second pour),\u00a0 forest floor mossiness.\u00a0 This smooth,\u00a0 balanced, structured, elegant wine was all old-world style and the farthest from a fruit bomb a California wine could be.<\/p>\n\n

Vintner notes: 2015 Hesperian Cabernet Sauvignon ~ Napa Valley<\/span><\/h3>\n

With a toasty, Pauillac-like profile, this has plummy and sweet fruit, with aromas that are the essence of ripe Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, a distinctive leathery-fruity smell of its own. The Wine Advocate noted its notes of \u201clicorice, tar, black soil and saut\u00e9ed herbs over a core of cassis, plum preserves and espresso with a hint of bouquet garni.\u201d Rated 93 points James Suckling<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

-Our Hesperian Kitoko Vineyard notes:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A softer\/demure nose when compared to the Napa Valley above. New wood (oak) at the forefront with red fruit compote in background. In addition on the palate; chocolate, lilac, a peaty earthiness, concentrated dry fruit (fig), anise. This single vineyard wine came across as smoother, more delicate yet wilder. It was incredible to see it develop and\u00a0 come to life in a 20 minute time-span.<\/p>\n

Vintner notes: 2015 Hesperian Cabernet Sauvignon Kitoko Vineyard ~ Napa Valley<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

This wine has it all. Made from 10 tons of fruit from 14 acres, low yields caused by \u201cshatter from hell,\u201d according to Philippe -this flaunts notes of tiramisu, black cherry liqueur, spicy oak, and money ink. The Wine Advocate loved its \u201ccassis, crushed blackberries, cigar box and Marmite toast nose with hints of Chinese five spice and dried mint.\u201d Gorgeous red and black fruit aromas interplay effortlessly. Rated 94 points THE WINE ADVOCATE. Rated 93 points James Suckling.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As you can probably tell by my accolades thus far, these wines were both big hits. Each had its own character and yet some similarities and both can easily age for ten plus years for the collectors out there. The 100% Kitoko Vineyard<\/strong> wine seemed more focused and wilder while the Hesperian Napa Valley<\/strong> came across as bold, rounder with more nuances. Probably due to the blend of the two vineyards; Kitoko and Coombsville. We found both to be inspiring in their own way and considered ourselves lucky to not have to choose between them. Each of these old-world style wines took you on a journey that you did not want to end.<\/p>\n

As per Hesperian Wines<\/a><\/strong> web-site: Philippe\u00a0 lives\u00a0 and\u00a0 works\u00a0 at\u00a0 Kitoko\u00a0 Vineyard\u00a0 on\u00a0 Atlas\u00a0 Peak,\u00a0 and\u00a0 continues\u00a0 to\u00a0 consult\u00a0 on\u00a0 viticulture\u00a0 and\u00a0 winemaking\u00a0 matters\u00a0 for\u00a0 select\u00a0 Napa\u00a0 Valley\u00a0 wineries<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/em>I find myself now looking forward to trying other vintages, previous and future, from Hesperian Wines<\/strong> and other wines produced by Philippe Langner.<\/p>\n

How refreshing it is to have this kind of wine coming out of\u00a0 Napa Valley.\u00a0 How lucky are we to have someone of this caliber focused on celebrating the worthiness of individual varietals the way they were meant to be experienced. In this case, Life IS a Cabernet!<\/span><\/p>\n

Vintage 2017 Outlook<\/a><\/h4>\n

March 31st, 2019<\/em><\/p>\n

The 2017s were blended in February and put back to barrel. It takes a while for the various lots that went intothe three blends to really integrate well. The wines are coming along nicely. Get ready for very big wines with the \u201817s. This was the vintage of the fire, and I\u2019m very happy and relieved to report that there is no smoke taint in the wines. (I\u2019ve had others smell and taste Hesperian\u2019s \u201817s, and they tell me the same. Relief!)<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The 2018s are fantastic, perhaps the best wines I\u2019ve made so far.<\/strong>\u00a0We are almost done with the first racking; some wines were starting to reduce a bit and they needed some air. Alas, we have to be patient. We won\u2019t see these wines coming available until 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
