In 2023, a team proposed one possible explanation: They used a “hot-mixing” technique to produce self-healing concrete, which could repair cracks on its own.

Now, researchers say they’ve confirmed that earlier hunch. They share their latest conclusions in a new paper published December 9 in the journal Nature Communications.

For the study, scientists took samples from an intact ancient construction site discovered at Pompeii, the ancient Roman city preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E. A comparison of materials from finished walls, in-progress walls and nearby piles of dry, raw material at the site “unequivocally” support the hot-mixing theory, the researchers write in the paper.

“Unlike finished structures that have undergone centuries of repair or weathering, this site captures construction processes as they happened,” study co-author Admir Masic, an engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tells Reuters’ Will Dunham. “For studying ancient technologies, there is simply no parallel. Its exceptional preservation offers a true ‘snapshot’ of Roman building practice in action.”

The Romans’ hot-mixing method entailed blending volcanic ash and other dry ingredients with “quicklime,” a form of highly reactive, dry limestone. Adding water set off a chain reaction that produced heat—hence the name. The resulting mixture was full of chunks of calcium that gave the concrete its self-healing properties: As water trickles into cracked or damaged Roman concrete, it encounters and dissolves the calcium. When those deposits later recrystallize or react with other materials, they help fill in the cracks.

At one point, while analyzing ancient Roman concrete, researchers wondered whether the calcium deposits—known as lime clasts—were simply the result of sloppy mixing. But that explanation never sat well with Masic, who told CNN’s Katie Hunt in 2023 it was “really difficult to believe that ancient Roman [engineers] would not do a good job, because they really made careful effort when choosing and processing materials.” Now, as seen through the lens of hot mixing, the calcium deposits’ presence makes sense.

The ancient Romans made self-healing concrete by mixing ingredients in a specific way.

Vaserman et al. / Nature Communications, 2025

The new discoveries contradict the concrete manufacturing process described in historic texts—specifically, an influential treatise called De Architectura written by famed Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius in the first century B.C.E.

Since they have “a lot of respect for Vitruvius,” it was difficult for the researchers to “suggest that his description may be inaccurate,” Masic says in a statement. However, the results from the research at Pompeii suggest Vitruvius’ writings were wrong—or, perhaps, “misinterpreted,” according to the statement.

It’s also possible that Vitruvius was simply describing an earlier method and that concrete manufacturing evolved as time went on. “A good analogy could be the early telephones,” Masic tells Reuters. “In the 1920s-30s: rotary dialing, long-distance copper lines. In the 2020s: smartphones using packet-switched digital signals and wireless networks.”

Looking ahead, the findings could help improve modern construction techniques, informing the development of next-generation durable, low-carbon concrete. Additionally, they could have implications for modern restoration practices—especially those used on ancient Roman buildings—ensuring that repairs are both “historically authentic and structurally sound,” the researchers write in the paper.

“This material can heal itself over thousands of years, it is reactive and it is highly dynamic,” Masic says in the statement. “It has survived earthquakes and volcanoes. It has endured under the sea and survived degradation from the elements. We don’t want to completely copy Roman concrete today. We just want to translate a few sentences from this book of knowledge into our modern construction practices.”

Meanwhile, the new paper is garnering praise from outside experts—including Tom Brughmans, an archaeologist at Aarhus University in Denmark, who describes it as “simply a beautiful observation, an archaeologist’s dream.”

“Few topics in Roman archaeology are more worth our attention than the development of concrete,” Brughmans, who was not involved with the research, tells Scientific American’s Humberto Basilio.

Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.

New research suggests the Romans used a method known as “hot mixing” to produce self-healing concrete, which allowed them to build structures that endured for centuries Sarah Kuta – Daily Correspondent December 12, 2025 5:09 p.m. The researchers based their conclusions on an intact ancient construction site found at Pompeii.
