Two amateur publishers from Dassel, Minnesota, Allison C. Brokaw and Reno L. Hayford, grew tired of the critical nature of amateur journalism and wanted publishers to focus their efforts on literary pursuits. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In April 1897, they published the first issue of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><em>Roasts<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.mwa.org\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?bibId=623106\">Catalog Record<\/a>)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an amateur newspaper that promised to print only \u201chonest criticisms.\u201d They wrote, \u201c\u2018roasts\u2019 are becoming so numerous as to appear in nearly every single representative of the cause. Hayford worked as an editor and reporter for several Minnesota papers while Brokaw worked for the Minneapolis Tribune for seventeen years before becoming the advertising director at a telephone company. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The American Antiquarian Society\u2019s April 1897 issue of volume 1, number 1, is the only known copy of <em>Roasts<\/em>.\u00a0 Given the often-fleeting nature of amateur newspapers, it\u2019s possible that this first issue was the only one ever published.
