The ambient category is our most competitive, as we receive an average of five ambient albums <em>every day<\/em>, which is only the tip of the ambient iceberg! \u00a0To make this year-end chart, one really has to stand out, which seems counter-intuitive for an otherwise unassuming genre. \u00a0Some artists do so with unified themes; others use field recordings or uncommon sounds; and others simply make memorable music that demands repeat listens. \u00a0All of this proves that there is great power in the <em>right amount of calm:\u00a0<\/em>not music for sleeping, but music to soothe the savage breast. \u00a0We hope that you are inspired by this year\u2019s inaugural staff list!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coco Francavilla ~\u00a0<em>re-oceaning<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>(Music and the Sea)<br \/>While much ambient music views oceanic music as peaceful, Coco Francavilla takes this a step further. \u00a0<em>re-oceaning\u00a0<\/em>is part of a larger project that hopes to challenge and inspire. \u00a0Like a womb, the ocean gave life to civilization, and now civilization is called upon to protect and preserve this primordial resource. \u00a0It\u2019s one thing to hear and enjoy the sound of seagrass; it\u2019s another to realize that it is endangered. \u00a0Proceeds benefit marine conservation and acoustic research via the artist-founded Music for the Sea; Francavilla\u2019s TED Talk reveals even deeper layers. \u00a0<strong>(Richard Allen)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"120\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/album=1600423197\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=0f91ff\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/acloserlisten.com\/2025\/06\/11\/coco-francavilla-re-oceaning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Original Review<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hammock ~\u00a0<em>Nevertheless\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Hammockmusic)<br \/>This is a truly ambient work from Hammock, who have historically strayed into heavier post-rock on past albums. In comparison, their latest is floatier and more delicate. Nevertheless, it is thickly laden with the same emotional intensity fans of the artist are familiar with. The two have been releasing music under various monikers, both separately and together, for years. Harbors is their latest project. <em>When We Are Free<\/em> layers fuzzy piano chords over airy instrumentals that morph and fade in slow motion. The result is a cozy haven from life\u2019s pressures and challenges whatever they may be, where listeners can\u2013 if only for 33 minutes and 12 seconds\u2013 be\u00a0free. <strong>(Maya Merberg)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"120\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/album=1662235798\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=2ebd35\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/acloserlisten.com\/2025\/08\/18\/harbors-hollie-kenniff-goldmund-when-we-are-free\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Original Review<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kieran Hebden + William Tyler ~\u00a0<em>41 Longfield Street Late 80s\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Eat Your Own Ears\/Temporary Residence)<br \/>Those who know Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) know that he is not afraid to collaborate, remix, and bend genres in weird and wild ways. Those who\u2019ve listened to the other William Tyler album on this list will have noticed that this artist, too\u2013 though a Nashville based Americana guitarist\u2013 has a penchant for exploring new musical territory. That said, the pairing of these two is wholly unexpected. Crafted at home without her signature cello, the album offers ten short pieces of looping melodies that occupy a graceful space between ambient minimalism and baroque. This is music designed for passive listening\u2014an intimate companion for cooking, walking, or resting that imbues the everyday with quiet wonder. The title means <em>invincible or unconquered. \u00a0<\/em>Track by track, the artist kneads her losses until they become like bread. \u00a0The album unfolds like a suite; guest appearances by soprano Ana San Mart\u00edn, cellist Oliver Coates and others enhance the emotional impact. \u00a0By the end, artist and listener are standing upright, not defined by their losses, but <em>refined. \u00a0<\/em><strong>(Richard Allen)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"120\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/album=2898348161\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=0f91ff\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/acloserlisten.com\/2025\/04\/08\/olivia-font-invictam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Original Review<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sontag Shogun x Lau Nau ~ <em>P\u00e4iv\u00e4kahvit<\/em><\/strong> (Beacon Sound)<br \/>An instinctive collaboration continues on this sublime record, whose title means\u00a0<em>afternoon coffee. <\/em>Culled from the same sessions as <em>Valo Siroutuu<\/em>, these tracks have always deserved to see the light of day, while the reworks enhance the original material like pleasant reminiscences of a vacation on a tropical island. \u00a0\u201cCan you stay with a memory too long?\u201d the artists asked in the initial press release. \u00a0Not if the memory is idyllic, filled with laughing children and the sounds of the sea. <strong>(Richard Allen)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"120\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/album=145411757\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=2ebd35\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/acloserlisten.com\/2025\/06\/17\/sontag-shogun-x-lau-nau-paivakahvit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Original Review<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>unitr\u0394_\u0394udio ~\u00a0<em>summer somewhere\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Onionwave)<br \/><em>summer somewhere <\/em>was released right around the summer solstice earlier this year. There\u2019s no better time than now, six months later, to revisit it, because this album is all about remembering the fact that summer is a feeling one can evoke no matter what month it is or where one is in the world. unitr\u0394_\u0394udio translates that summer feeling to sound. The guitar remains the central focus, but on <em>Time Indefinite<\/em>, he embraces uncertainty, tape loops, drones and ghosts in the machine. This is music out of time, haunted by people and places from decades \u2013 probably centuries \u2013 previous. It\u2019s not as straightforward or accessible as most of his other work, but that is its strength.
