{"id":34032,"date":"2025-01-18T02:54:26","date_gmt":"2025-01-18T02:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/marketing\/how-to-find-clients-as-a-freelancer-coach-or-entrepreneur\/"},"modified":"2025-01-18T02:54:26","modified_gmt":"2025-01-18T02:54:26","slug":"how-to-find-clients-as-a-freelancer-coach-or-entrepreneur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=34032","title":{"rendered":"How To Find Clients As a Freelancer, Coach, or Entrepreneur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"text\">\n<p>You may have already tried \u2013 without success \u2013 many of the common strategies to find clients as a freelancer, coach, or entrepreneur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what <em>usually<\/em> happens when freelancers\/coaches\/entrepreneurs try the most commonly mentioned tips to find clients:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ask for referrals<\/strong>: <em>I\u2019m just starting out and don\u2019t have anyone to ask for a reference.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cold email<\/strong>: <em>I tried this, but nobody responds to my emails!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply to jobs on Upwork<\/strong>: <em>I applied to dozens, but winning a gig is impossible because there\u2019s so much competition.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Build a website<\/strong>:<em> I did that, but nobody knows it exists!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the end, you spend more time and effort trying to <em>find<\/em> clients than actually doing work.<\/p>\n<p>Yet these are the tactics many freelancers use to get jobs today. For example, Shaan Puri sold out his writing coaching program in days with a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShaanVP\/status\/1392238205362008064\">simple Tweet<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcKQiXtAirG3Fj5xYi5EfckH9vNC5N_mHNBY4wXzBYE-_1YWnxAQ3Aw_1Om-XOMMvV8VBd7EONnCM226T5TUbCQZPDyCxog48kSXpa1MzzSnAQwgektcA0O4uR_xArRhtfcvq6iKw?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:532px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here are just a few of the comments:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXd0ZHco_A-L2vZzIMgEsISm5D3NIJICbliAvwwdKxwPhRlkryWS8fmbPzbEPVnu260arhzi02dnWN92n_JuW4paIpsy4CzK67ZUbskrtPFD-tC7d1ZSkZwXvh1nLLandD76830x?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:476px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdEEbVT5HJEHhypu9CAS8c47q0cRoNSk73PbNkrBUCWMDRaVD9l_sRyrnjc_XcadSWtYJnruN2xzVrX3ps3fXyugUG99hALd3qTJBLAPMjWeFPcP_0YK841G8Nkn4Dj_oClGAA9sA?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:477px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, it\u2019s easy to earn clients if you have tens of thousands of followers who fit your ideal customer profile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The obvious problem is that<strong> most freelancers just getting started don\u2019t have tens of thousands of followers<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, if you publish a post on social media saying that you\u2019re taking on new clients, yet you only have a handful of followers, you probably won\u2019t generate any clients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, this person took the typical \u201cbest practice\u201d advice to searching for new clients by posting on social media:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXeSSyi441G9EcHgKDdQrykNBVyKJpGqBbYi2g1h6rWy4tybyzKzbfg5JXxntZqLncY6w1Akh4BtoKGnEAG6Q1Xlr_hgdXRyHwsVNQDrfl4kdPuu2FhB6t5ICJN2Wn9Cjy4VZ_Rd?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:430px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yet this person has less than 1,000 followers, and you can see that the post generated minimal engagement and likely didn\u2019t drive any sales.<\/p>\n<p>If you currently have zero followers on social media, here are two solutions to this problem (and I recommend you do both of them):<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>To close a new client in the next few weeks:<\/strong> Partner with someone who <strong>does<\/strong> have a social media following.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To generate endless client demand over the next several years<\/strong>: Build your own social media following by <a href=\"https:\/\/copyblogger.com\/solopreneur-personal-branding\/\">building a personal brand<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To partner with someone who already has a social media following, first identify your ideal customer (industry, title, characteristics, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Then, reach out to a person who fits that description and has a strong social media following (ideally, at least 10,000 \u2013 50,000 followers).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reach out on social media and ask if you can do your service for them for free, and in exchange, they will post about your work on social media.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a freelancer named Diego reached out to influencer Sam Parr and offered to make clips from his long-form content. In return, Sam posted about it on his social media, and demand for Diego\u2019s services blew up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXd-kj6MeMLdW0YWNr5gqWf-YmQJGetlEwLHja1FGU0uZ3ndOoEe5X5Aiiba2tD1GXT7kLuY3ruiLsIc9cZEaX6oj3X0js512O7iJ5x2yMMwjU-iwKz4WRkHtzSokOpRKpsO3LmHCA?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:551px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, start building your <a href=\"https:\/\/copyblogger.com\/solopreneur-personal-branding\/\">personal brand<\/a> on social media so that several years from now, you\u2019re the person with thousands of followers.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have thousands of followers and a strong reputation, you\u2019ll have people reaching out to <em>you<\/em> for your services, and you\u2019ll never have to do cold outreach again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To build a personal brand and attract thousands of followers, start posting about your journey working for free for some of these people. The subject line actually got me to open the email because it looked like it could be something from a friend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I\u2019m not interested in it and just deleted it.<\/p>\n<p>There are two reasons why this cold email was unsuccessful:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m not interested in cold email services.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s no proof that they are actually good at cold emailing.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfz-BnxL3KAb2OxaZGHgeWmXWwkYeuoV5R7KjNqm76qFnXkp9HyuZwTBg9glZYUJHETPDtskndZWBTv1B9hf69u5JUAMOk2awSuuZvVkEciE_eqgaSroj2Y4jy6W1MeOpWfGgZz?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>On the other hand, this cold email I sent ultimately turned into a client that paid me tens of thousands of dollars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcAh5Czef01ybHxW-TogLrBo5RMSNv0h0aYOyGinJLGykfzmY7i9dnkfF23KKvAqkrAn0vDN8Y0BbCKMI9zgZRgNf8Gk9MVJyoktwvp__10bDR4sNLsDWgX7Rykveeh1_yD4aiDTg?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:669px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>There are a few reasons why this pitch worked:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>I identified a company with demand for my service<\/strong>. I saw this company was already hiring a content writer on AngelList, so they clearly want the service I offer.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>I said why I\u2019m different<\/strong>. Instead of just writing blog posts, I\u2019ll interview their key team members and then track conversions \u2013 a very unique approach most freelance writers aren\u2019t pitching. Stating your process is even more compelling than just stating generic numbers or company names (e.g., \u201cwe helped X company drive X revenue\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, instead of pitching generic companies, find people\/companies that you know are interested in investing in your service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Note that it\u2019s important to invest in companies interested in your service that haven\u2019t invested in it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, if they just hired an SEO consultant, they probably won\u2019t hire another SEO consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Job boards are excellent for finding potential clients. I prefer to look at job boards for full-time hires as those companies are the most serious about investing in your service (and therefore have more money to spend!) and they tend to receive fewer freelance pitches than if you post on a traditional freelance job board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdKr8fvsmdF9lhv9dpHfZjjdMraTX3gdb6TJQ5WMM4f3ftrIVdVe_Ej7zeIdqs13SVqgBhp-S2iJF5R28iEx46ZxVQg8N_mwQ6puWMOA1IzmfMf1pxdxE_-zSxw96PieIppUCMnbQ?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-build-industry-partnerships\">Build Industry Partnerships<\/h2>\n<p>A great way to earn new clients is by partnering with other service providers offering parallel services.<\/p>\n<p>A client who needs a website also needs SEO.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A couple hiring a wedding planner also needs a wedding venue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The key to building partnerships is understanding how referring your services will benefit your potential partner.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that many of these companies receive pitches for partnership opportunities frequently, and many already have partnerships in place. Therefore, simply sending a cold email and telling them that you want to partner probably won\u2019t work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, use this strategy:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify companies or freelancers who already serve your ideal customer, but either don\u2019t currently offer your services or only work with clients at a higher price point.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For example, this person offers design services and, therefore, might be a great potential partner if you\u2019re an SEO who works with startups, as you both serve the same customer, and your services are parallel but don\u2019t overlap.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcDg2Vcw8SvZc0-IaP5hE4W1rOQnZSqFdkoGOKHUBLx1eUB_QhpH5eflJN4GaELMosZBw9Rl3hEnAy31oQIM09qtKnX7_uMoKRxaj0EAHHqPCXXNL2sUj76fE5nl4lGQyC4G8ucHw?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:576px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Alternatively, if you\u2019re trying to sell your SEO services, you could reach out to an enterprise SEO firm and ask if you could take the leads that don\u2019t have the budget to work with them. This strategy has helped me win clients in the past:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXf6WV8Dri7Zdg4rxEcvm8VqjHwqohh3gM3irl7R0HXdqOQyzbQYmoRdyrnFtSfkyF2lCbVkj-OIDJSMZ9BL4WCaSMeLlvsWMWUGWFs_edt_Q9ux3y6UHH5Pa4Ll5Cb6O4x7-HikGw?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:835px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you\u2019re pitching someone cold, offer to do a free sample for them and then give them a high percentage (over 50%) or ideally <em>all<\/em> of the profits for the first few months working together.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This pitch is compelling because the partner company\/freelancer makes significantly more money without any additional work. In fact, many of their clients are probably already looking for parallel services, so the partnership with you makes them more attractive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfV9xYzUgSzqGAr2Hs1nJfC0MVLTcdZCZZR6Q4YOR3ZXSFbljaLOQJRHqem9bbB3W-lf2qypoMqGw8_lYzK686tOowPQp7ism6HqbSVDrvc1iv1Uq9oVF-SCzelTO7HyVs4zbwV?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-network-nbsp\">Network\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Networking is a common tip for finding clients as a freelancer, coach, or entrepreneur, but attending local networking events and handing out business cards probably won\u2019t help you close new clients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unless you\u2019re specifically trying to win local clients, attending local events probably won\u2019t help you connect with your <em>dream<\/em> clients (unless you live in a major city like New York or Austin where major industry events happen regularly).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, try to attend the most popular events in your customers\u2019 industry. For example, attend an equine vet conference if you\u2019re trying to close equine veterinary clients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXc-WP66xL4747-Xv0Cqj_EF1WXV3X9u5N03bJcB-yWlOUi85j1eqBDC3N81Gpo4YeEftR_Z1o-gZvVi-WhJdTBrS6Aredrpm_blA3pl9UT6tDNxttkb2ZhCXPXEZ4laIB7PatTm?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>A quick Google search will show you the biggest events in your industry:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcmAdAsxUP-2Firekj4EQIsI0l2CnBdOnCQdpSBlPkgyTEt9-BqY2K9y1zQUJY36nMxdupXrOFQa0szYqtGqJvvZg-28OchGeBwUY71zdb6JPYjvVry5C-TUBgelZZzaw5SUs7VBg?key=V1VP44S1A52JlaYHiy5hfqO8\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once you\u2019re at the event, acknowledge that relationships take time to build, and people can tell when you\u2019re just trying to sell. So don\u2019t expect to close any deals on your first interaction with a person.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, use events as market research. Ask people questions like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What are you working on that you\u2019re most excited about?<\/li>\n<li>What have been the biggest challenges in achieving your goals? (You can also tailor this question to be relevant to the services you offer. You\u2019ll also be able to show off your knowledge if you speak at the workshop. Of course, if you\u2019re planning to speak at the event, you should have some genuine knowledge of the subject, so this isn\u2019t a great strategy if you\u2019re brand new to the service you\u2019re offering.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I once collaborated with a content marketing Slack Group (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=superpath&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\">Superpath<\/a>) and hosted weekly workshops. They have to think of people who may be interested in your services. It\u2019s also awkward for them to actively reach out and ask those friends if they\u2019d like to hire you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, most clients will say, \u201cSure, if anyone asks, I\u2019ll give them your contact info.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result, you won\u2019t get any business.<\/p>\n<p>A better strategy is to give them a specific request like this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Hi (client), I\u2019m currently expanding my business and looking to bring on a few more clients.
