It effectively serves as the soundtrack to the internet. <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmsauce.com\/best-royalty-free-music-websites\/\" title=\"Royalty\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"415\">Royalty<\/a> free music is studio-quality soundscapes without the studio-sized legal fees. Though there are some things you must know.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Royalty_Free_Does_Not_Mean_Free\"\/><strong>1. Royalty Free Does Not Mean Free<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>The word \u201cfree\u201d in royalty free refers to the <em><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmsauce.com\/songs-about-freedom\/\" title=\"freedom\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"416\">freedom<\/a> from paying royalties<\/em>, not the freedom from cost.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmsauce.com\/2019\/12\/30\/best-music-industry-books\/\" title=\"music industry\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"417\">music industry<\/a>, if you wanted to use a Beyonc\u00e9 song in a commercial, you would have to pay a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmsauce.com\/syncresource\" title=\"Sync\" class=\"pretty-link-keyword\" rel=\"\">licensing<\/a> fee upfront (a hefty one), plus a royalty every time that commercial aired.<\/p>\n<p>Royalty free works differently:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You pay a one-time fee (or a monthly subscription) to purchase the license.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have paid that fee, you can use the music as many times as the license allows without ever paying another cent per view or per play.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You are buying the <em>right<\/em> to use the music, <em>not<\/em> the music itself.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_The_Three_Classes_of_Licensing\"\/><strong>2. (Music where copyright has expired, usually 70+ years after the artist\u2019s death).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Creative Commons (CC)<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>Free ($0)<\/td>\n<td>Medium<\/td>\n<td>Budget projects. You usually must credit the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmsauce.com\/artists\/\" title=\"artist\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"413\">artist<\/a> in the description. Read the fine print carefully.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Royalty-Free<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>Paid ($$)<\/td>\n<td>None<\/td>\n<td>Best for professional content. Platforms like Epidemic Sound, Artlist, or Musicbed ensure your rights are protected.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Beware_the_Content_ID_Kraken\"\/><strong><br \/>3. Beware the Content ID Kraken<br \/><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>You found a beat. It says \u201cNo Copyright\u201d in the YouTube title. You download it, edit your video, and upload it. Boom. You get a copyright claim.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube\u2019s Content ID system is a system that scans every second of uploaded video against a database of copyrighted <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmsauce.com\/best-ai-audio-tools\/\" title=\"audio\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"414\">audio<\/a>. However, many \u201cfree\u201d tracks found on random YouTube channels aren\u2019t actually cleared. If the artist later decides to register that song with a Content ID partner, you get claimed, and that hurts.<\/p>\n<p>You likely won\u2019t receive a strike, a formal infraction that puts your entire channel at risk of termination, but the rights holder can demonetize your video and retain all the ad revenue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. By sourcing from these professional libraries, you swap the risk for a guarantee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Canceling Your Subscription <br \/><\/strong>Since the royalty free industry has moved heavily toward subscription models, you must understand what happens when you hit cancel.<\/p>\n<p>There is a misconception that once you download a song during your subscription, you own it forever.<em> This is false.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>While Subscribed:<\/strong> Any video you publish during your active subscription is cleared forever (in perpetuity). Even if you cancel later, that specific video remains safe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>After Cancellation:<\/strong> You lose the right to use those downloaded tracks in <em>new<\/em> projects. You cannot hoard 500 songs, cancel your subscription, and use them for the next five years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The license is usually attached to the upload date of your video, not the download date of the song. If you upload a video with a track after your subscription expires, the Content ID system will flag it immediately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Keep Your Receipts<\/strong><br \/>Even when you do everything right, algorithms can make mistakes. YouTube\u2019s bots often flag legally licensed music simply because the waveform matches a copyrighted song. This is why you should always save your license certificate (usually a PDF provided at purchase or download).<\/p>\n<p>If you receive a false claim, this document is your \u201cGet Out of Jail Free\u201d card.
