Version 8B28 and 8B30 merely tweak the wireless earbuds, but every AirPods update is worth installing.<\/p>\n<p>Apple recently explained exactly how to update your AirPods firmware. The process can happen automatically, in the background, but there is a way to speed things up. It\u2019s a good idea to manually check that you\u2019re running the latest version, which brings bug fixes and sometimes great new features.<\/p><!-- Ezoic - gen_under_page_title - under_page_title --><!-- End Ezoic - gen_under_page_title - under_page_title -->\n<p>Read on for more details, and find all current AirPods firmware versions, along with instructions for getting the AirPods update <a href=\"#force-update\">as quickly as possible<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to update AirPods firmware<\/h2>\n<p>Apple periodically releases new AirPods firmware with improvements and bug fixes. It\u2019s well worth installing these updates because they fix bugs and sometimes contain significant new features. There\u2019s no better example than the firmware update released in September.\u00a0<\/p><!-- Ezoic - gen_under_first_paragraph - under_first_paragraph --><!-- End Ezoic - gen_under_first_paragraph - under_first_paragraph -->\n<p>Apple typically doesn\u2019t bother to announce AirPods firmware updates. However, the company does publish <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/106340#latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"233608\">release notes<\/a> so users know what\u2019s changed. Apple\u2019s descriptions of the changes in 8B28 and 8B30 promise simply, \u201cBug fixes and other improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When you hear about an AirPods firmware update, you can force it to update by <a href=\"#force-update\">following the process described below<\/a>. When connected, your AirPods should be right at the top of settings, just below your Apple ID settings. Tap the name of your AirPods, and on the next screen scroll almost to the bottom where you\u2019ll see <strong>Version<\/strong>, which lists the current firmware number.<\/p>\n<p>For many AirPods models, look for <strong>Version<\/strong> to say\u00a0<strong>8B21<\/strong> or maybe <strong>6F21<\/strong>. The same is true for first-gen AirPods Pro. <span class=\"s1\">Your AirPods Pro should read <strong>8B28<\/strong> or <strong>8B30<\/strong>, and so on. For close to a decade, Apple resisted revealing the process, though users figured it out. But in early 2025 Apple finally explained \u2014 at long last \u2014 exactly what to do.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, you can\u2019t push a button or toggle a setting to immediately tell your AirPods to update. It\u2019s a bit more indirect. Apple says the process to update your AirPods or AirPods Pro firmware involves:<\/p><!-- Ezoic - gen_incontent_5 - incontent_5 --><!-- End Ezoic - gen_incontent_5 - incontent_5 -->\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure that your AirPods are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad or Mac that\u2019s connected to Wi-Fi.<\/li>\n<li>Put your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid.<\/li>\n<li>Plug the charging cable into your charging case, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the lid of the charging case closed, and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.<\/li>\n<li>Open the lid of the charging case to reconnect your AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#airpods-firmware\">Check the firmware version again.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you still can\u2019t update your firmware, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/118531\" data-lasso-id=\"1641684133\" target=\"_blank\">reset your AirPods<\/a>, then try to update your firmware again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0This is just what we\u2019ve said for years: the best you can do is put your AirPods or AirPods Pro in their case and plug the case into a power cable (Lightning or USB-C). Then make sure the iPhone or iPad they are paired with is close by, and wait. The firmware should update. Typically, the process takes five to 10 minutes, but it can take up to 30 minutes. Be patient! <\/span><\/p><!-- Ezoic - gen_incontent_6 - incontent_6 --><!-- End Ezoic - gen_incontent_6 - incontent_6 -->\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s worth the wait. AirPods just evolved into more than just wireless earbuds \u2014 they now a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/news\/live-translation-airpods\" data-lasso-id=\"1641731042\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pocket translator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, capable of real-time language conversion. And the more recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/news\/airpods-pro-as-hearing-aids-reviews-yes-it-works\" data-lasso-id=\"1641869165\">AirPods Pro models started acting as hearing aids<\/a> and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/reviews\/airpods-live-translation\" data-lasso-id=\"1641917388\">they\u2019re language translators<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Same thing goes for upgrading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/tag\/airpods-max\/\" data-lasso-id=\"1641562230\">AirPods Max<\/a>: Just plug the headphones into a charging cable. Or if you have a wireless charging case, put your AirPods on a wireless charger. Then put the headphones near your iPhone or iPad and wait.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, manually updating AirPods firmware is a problem only for people who get antsy and want the latest as soon as they can get it. For everyone else, just keep using your AirPods. The update will happen without you having to do a thing.<\/p><!-- Ezoic - gen_incontent_7 - incontent_7 --><!-- End Ezoic - gen_incontent_7 - incontent_7 -->\n<h3 id=\"mac\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to check AirPods\u2019 current firmware version on Mac<\/h3>\n<p>You also can check your AirPods firmware on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/tag\/mac\/\" data-lasso-id=\"1641562231\">Mac<\/a>. Your Mac will need to be running macOS Ventura or later.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Check it against the firmware numbers listed above, or against <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/106340\" data-lasso-id=\"1641562232\" target=\"_blank\">Apple\u2019s list<\/a> of current AirPod firmware updates.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Force an update<\/h4>\n<p>If the firmware version isn\u2019t up to date, pop your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/tag\/airpods\/\" data-lasso-id=\"1641562233\">AirPods<\/a> into their case, and plug them into a charging cable. You can put the other end of the charging cable into your Mac. The firmware should update itself. Again, it typically takes five to 10 minutes, but might take half a hour or longer. If your AirPods came with a wireless charging case, you can put them on a wireless charger.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"android-windows\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you update AirPods firmware on Android or Windows?<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n<p>Even though you can connect your AirPods to an Android device or a Windows computer, you cannot update the firmware on Android or Windows. You can only update AirPods firmware on iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
