{"id":339629,"date":"2025-12-11T20:05:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T20:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/teams-that-perform-part-i-voltage-leadership-consulting\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T20:05:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T20:05:12","slug":"teams-that-perform-part-i-voltage-leadership-consulting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=339629","title":{"rendered":"Teams That Perform Part I \u2014 Voltage Leadership Consulting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/55b8ede6e4b038d8ae70a83e\/1594002625986-JMLIGWNVL5V9G0S578VM\/man-wearing-white-long-sleeved-shirt-holding-black-pen-3182781.jpg?format=1500w\" \/><\/p>\n<div data-sqsp-text-block-content=\"\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When a team does not perform, it is usually the coach that is held accountable. \u00a0What do successful coaches do to drive to successful team performance?\u00a0 What are the factors that distinguish teams that perform well from those that don\u2019t? <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As a leadership consultant, I have found that <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">balancing the four variables<\/span> of time, energy, people, and communication well is often the key to successful team performance. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>1)<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>Time<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 We all get 168 hours a week. \u00a0That&#8217;s it. \u00a0How a leader chooses to invest that time and with whom often spells the difference between mediocrity and success. \u00a0Understanding the importance of where their time goes is the first variable that a leader must pay attention to.\u00a0 For the team, nothing replaces meaningful, uninterrupted 1:1 time with the leader. \u00a0You spend time <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">with<\/span> them, and they will spend time <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">for<\/span> you. \u00a0New leaders often make the mistake of getting sucked into the transactional spin cycle versus strategic re-purposing of time on their calendars to lead. \u00a0Invest time <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">in<\/span> the team and you will reap the rewards <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">as<\/span> a team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>2) <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>Energy<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; In addition to managing time, the leader must be aware of their own personal energy clock in order to show up at their best. \u00a0We are not all wired the same way. \u00a0I have a friend who we affectionately refer to as the Energizer Bunny. \u00a0We are not all Energizer Bunnies. \u00a0Fundamental to leadership is understanding when our energy reserves are at their highest and applying those reserves appropriately to the situation at hand. \u00a0Don&#8217;t make the mistake of showing up depleted to something that requires energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>3) <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>People<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; <em>Relationships are the conduit by which we do business and trust is the currency<\/em>. \u00a0As we are working with and through people, trusting relationships are instruments of exchange, and like currency exchanges, the \u2018exchange rate\u2019 can fluctuate. \u00a0<em>Trust<\/em> may be defined as the level of confidence a person has in the leader\u2019s future actions. \u00a0Remember, nothing replaces meaningful uninterrupted 1:1 time with the leader to build trusting relationships within your team. \u00a0Give your team the tools to do their job, set realistic expectations, trust them to do their jobs, and then get out of their way.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>4) <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>Communication<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; It has been said that communication is the cause of and solution to all managerial issues. \u00a0When communication flows freely and with integrity good things tend to happen. \u00a0This includes times when the leader must deliver challenging feedback. \u00a0Many times leaders will refrain from delivering needed course corrections which can result in continued poor performance.\u00a0 A good way to learn how to communicate well includes thinking about ourselves less and thinking about others more. \u00a0This builds transparency. \u00a0Courage plus transparency equals genuineness &#8212; a key ingredient of success. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Many times leaders will develop a sort of managerial writer\u2019s block. \u00a0It can be frustrating not to know <br \/>intuitively the best way to handle certain individuals or situations.\u00a0 When this happens <strong>try the opposite of your initial \u201cgo to\u201d response<\/strong>. \u00a0If you are the sort of leader that has concerns or anxiety about how to deal with a particular person try doing the opposite &#8212; if you tend to become reactive, pause before you say anything, count to 10, breathe deeply before jumping into a response; if you tend to clam up, continue or initiate the conversation by asking generous questions instead;
