The rapid development of workplace health protective and preventive services has been driven by government strategies\u00a0<\/span>and proposals\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>as by\u00a0<\/span>the ecu\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>Union legislation\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>areas of health and safety at work and by\u00a0<\/span>the ecu\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>Commission programme\u00a0<\/span>publicly\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>health. This was also largely\u00a0<\/span>thanks to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the new demands and expectations from employers, employees and their representative bodies as they recognize the economic, social and health benefits achieved by providing these services at the workplace, thus providing the available knowledge and evidence necessary for\u00a0<\/span>the continual\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>improvement of workplace health management. Comprehensive workplace health management\u00a0<\/span>may be a\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>process involving all stakeholders inside\u00a0<\/span>and out of doors\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>any business. It aims at empowering them\u00a0<\/span>to require\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>control over their own health and their family’s health considering environmental, lifestyle, occupational and social health determinants and quality of health care.\u00a0<\/span>it’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>supported\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>health promotion principles and it creates\u00a0<\/span>an excellent\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>challenge to health, environment and safety professionals providing services, advice, information and education to social partners at work. It involves also taking care of considerable socioeconomic interest of all involved stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span>it’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>been shown in several instances that the business utilizing a well managed research based occupational health service can gain a competitive advantage by:<\/span><\/p>\n

Protecting human health against health and safety hazards occurring\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>work environment.<\/span>
Promoting human health workplaces for all ages and healthy aging by appropriate work culture, work organization and support to social cohesion.<\/span>
Promoting\u00a0<\/span>psychological state\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, healthy lifestyle and preventing major non-communicable diseases using specific workplace health policies and management tools.<\/span>
Maintaining work ability thus also employability throughout working life.<\/span>
Reducing health care costs caused by employees’ and employers’ injuries, diseases, illnesses and premature retirement resulting from or influenced by occupational, environmental, life style and social health determinants<\/span>
Using resources effectively, protecting the natural environment and creating a health supportive environment.<\/span>
Improving social communication and literacy on health, environment and ethics.<\/span>
This article series describes the author’s observations\u00a0<\/span>of varied\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>roles undertaken by the occupational health nurse. Whilst recognizing the wide variation that exists in occupational health nursing practice between different industrial and blue collar environments this series reflects the standards that have already been achieved where occupational health nursing is at its most advanced. However\u00a0<\/span>it’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>to be recognized that\u00a0<\/span>the extent\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of education, professional skills\u00a0<\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>exiting national legislation determines what role\u00a0<\/span>are often\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>actually undertaken by occupational health nurses. Even more important is\u00a0<\/span>to recollect\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>nobody\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>professional out of the exiting workplace health professions is now capable to meeting all health needs of the working population. A multi-disciplinary approach\u00a0<\/span>is required\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>to effectively manage the growing workplace health and safety demands in business today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The workplace health services use\u00a0<\/span>the talents\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of the many\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>professionals\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>specialist occupational physicians, safety engineers, occupational hygienists, occupational health nurses, ergonomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, laboratory technicians, psychologists and other specialists. The role and tasks actually performed for\u00a0<\/span>the businesses\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>by representatives\u00a0<\/span>of various\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>health and safety professions vary greatly depending upon legislative needs, scope of the workplace health concept perceived by directors, enforcement practice,\u00a0<\/span>the extent\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of their education, position\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>occupational health infrastructure, actions undertaken by insurance institutions\u00a0<\/span>and lots of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>other factors. Occupational health nurses are\u00a0<\/span>the foremost\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>important\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>single group of health professionals involved in delivering health services at the workplace and have the most important role to play\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>workplace health management.\u00a0<\/span>they’re\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>at the frontline in helping\u00a0<\/span>to guard\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>and promote the health of the nations working population.<\/span><\/p>\n

The role of the occupational health nurse in workplace health management\u00a0<\/span>may be a\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>new and exciting concept\u00a0<\/span>that’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>designed\u00a0<\/span>to enhance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the management of health and health related problems\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>workplace. Specialist occupational health nurses can play\u00a0<\/span>a serious\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>role in protecting and improving the health of the working population as\u00a0<\/span>a part of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>this strategy. Occupational health nurses\u00a0<\/span>also can\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>make\u00a0<\/span>a serious\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>contribution to the sustainable development, improved competitiveness, job security and increased profitability\u00a0<\/span>of companies\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>and communities by addressing those factors which are\u00a0<\/span>associated with\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the health of the working population. By helping\u00a0<\/span>to scale back\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>occupational health nurses can contribute to the increased profitability and performance of organizations and reduce health care costs. Occupational health nurses\u00a0<\/span>also can\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>help\u00a0<\/span>to scale back\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the externalization of costs onto the taxpayer, by preventing disability and social exclusion, and by improving rehabilitation services at work. By protecting and promoting the health of the working population, and by promoting social inclusion, occupational health nurses\u00a0<\/span>also can\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>make\u00a0<\/span>a big\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>contribution towards building a caring social ethos within\u00a0<\/span>the united kingdom\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>this text\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>provides guidance to employers and employees on establishing workplace health management systems within their own organizations. On\u00a0<\/span>the way to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>determine and develop the role and functions of the occupational health nursing specialist within each enterprise and where\u00a0<\/span>to travel\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>for extra\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>help and advice in\u00a0<\/span>reference to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>occupational health nursing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Changing nature of working life\u00a0<\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>new challenges<\/span><\/p>\n

The world\u00a0<\/span>of labor\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>has undergone enormous change\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>last hundred years. To\u00a0<\/span>an outsized\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>extent the very heavy, dirty and dangerous industries have gone,\u00a0<\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>burden of disease, which came with them, in most European countries, has declined. However, the new working environments and conditions\u00a0<\/span>of labor\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>that have replaced them have given rise to new and different concerns about the health of the working population. Exposure to physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial risk factors at work are now\u00a0<\/span>far more\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>clearly linked to health outcomes\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>mind of\u00a0<\/span>the overall\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>public. Expectations of society in\u00a0<\/span>reference to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>health at work have also changed, with increasing demands for better standards of protection at work and for\u00a0<\/span>the development\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the standard\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of working life. Employers\u00a0<\/span>also are\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>recognizing that health-related issues,\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>sickness absence, litigation and compensation costs, increasing insurance premiums, are expensive; ignoring them can\u00a0<\/span>cause\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>serious economic consequences.\u00a0<\/span>the simplest\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>employers’ emphasize the important message that\u00a0<\/span>healthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>is sweet\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>business,\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>much\u00a0<\/span>are often\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>achieved\u00a0<\/span>during this\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>field\u00a0<\/span>just by\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>introducing good management practices.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Need for Workplace Management<\/span><\/p>\n

There are approximately 400 million\u00a0<\/span>people that\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>add\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the EU Member States.\u00a0<\/span>the bulk\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of whom spend\u00a0<\/span>quite\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>one\u00a0<\/span>half\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>their waking life at work. However, fatal accidents at work are still common. The standardized incident rates per 100,000 workers\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>European Union\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>show that the\u00a0<\/span>casualty\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>rate varies between 1.6\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>UK to 13.9 in Spain, with Austria, Greece, France, Italy and Portugal all above 5.0%.\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>entire European region there are approximately 200 to 7500 non-fatal accidents per 100,000 employees\u00a0<\/span>per annum\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, of which around 10% are severe\u00a0<\/span>resulting in\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>over 60 days absence from work, and up\u00a0<\/span>to five\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, per year,\u00a0<\/span>cause\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>permanent disability.\u00a0<\/span>it’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>been estimated that\u00a0<\/span>the entire\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>cost to society\u00a0<\/span>of labor\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>related injuries and\u00a0<\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>European Union\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>is between 185 billion and 270 billion ECU\u00a0<\/span>per annum\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, which represents between 2.6% to 3.8% of Gross National Product (GNP) in member states.\u00a0<\/span>the value\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of workplace accidents and\u00a0<\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, in both financial and human terms, remains\u00a0<\/span>a huge\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>, largely unrecognized burden in UK.\u00a0<\/span>the bulk\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of these\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>accidents and diseases could\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>prevented if appropriate action had been taken at the workplace. Many responsible employers have consistently demonstrated that by\u00a0<\/span>listening\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>to those\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>issues\u00a0<\/span>this sort\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>of harm\u00a0<\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>subsequent costs\u00a0<\/span>are often\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>avoided, to the\u00a0<\/span>advantage of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>everyone concerned. Increasing concern\u00a0<\/span>is that the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>growing awareness of occupational stress. Up to 42%\u00a0<\/span>of labor\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>ers\u00a0<\/span>during a\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>recent survey complained about the high pace of work. Job insecurity, fear of unemployment, lack of\u00a0<\/span>a daily\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>salary\u00a0<\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>potential loss\u00a0<\/span>of labor\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>ability are all additional sources of stress, even for those\u00a0<\/span>employed\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>.<\/span>
The wide ranging social and health effects of occupational stress on the health of the working population are well documented,\u00a0<\/span>for instance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>23% of workers surveyed claimed that\u00a0<\/span>that they had\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>been absent from work for work related health reasons\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>previous twelve months. The resulting cost of sickness absence in\u00a0<\/span>uk\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>is taken into account\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>to be substantial.\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>UK 177 million working days were lost in 1994 as a\u00a0<\/span>results of\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>sickness absence; this has been assessed at over 11 billion in lost productivity. HSE statistics are encouraging given in 2009; only 29.3 million days were lost overall, 24.6 million\u00a0<\/span>thanks to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>work-related\u00a0<\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>and 4.7 million\u00a0<\/span>thanks to\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>workplace injury. Much of this burden of\u00a0<\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>and therefore the\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>resulting sickness absence is caused, or\u00a0<\/span>is formed\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>worse by working conditions. Even where\u00a0<\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>isn’t\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>directly caused by work, but by other non-occupational factors\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>smoking, lifestyle, diet etc. Interventions designed\u00a0<\/span>to enhance\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the health of the working population, delivered at the workplace, may help\u00a0<\/span>to scale back\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>still further the burden of\u00a0<\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>at the present\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>the socioeconomic impact of environmental pollution caused by industrial processes on the working population is uncertain, but\u00a0<\/span>it’s\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>likely to contribute further to the burden of\u00a0<\/span>unhealthiness\u00a0<\/roshu><\/span>in some communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
