{"id":338416,"date":"2025-12-11T00:11:29","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T00:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/alumni-nonprofit-raises-funds-to-support-student-journalists-at-suspended-ua-magazines\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T00:11:29","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T00:11:29","slug":"alumni-nonprofit-raises-funds-to-support-student-journalists-at-suspended-ua-magazines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=338416","title":{"rendered":"Alumni nonprofit raises funds to support student journalists at suspended UA magazines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Since launching earlier this week, a <a href=\"https:\/\/givebutter.com\/F0LNOA\">fundraiser<\/a> meant to help publish two more magazine issues by the University of Alabama students who worked on <em>Alice<\/em> and <em>Nineteen Fifty-Six<\/em> before those publications\u2019 suspension has raised over $22,000 out of a $25,000 goal.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the two student run magazines were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/12\/03\/university-of-alabama-suspends-two-student-magazines-over-dei\/\">suspended<\/a> over what the university administration described as \u201clegal obligations\u201d stemming from a July memo issued by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. Editors of the publications told APR and the University of Alabama\u2019s student paper, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thecrimsonwhite.com\/125358\/news\/university-suspends-alice-nineteen-fifty-six-student-magazines\/\">The Crimson White<\/a><\/em>, that they had not used so-called \u201cunlawful proxies\u201d and thought the decision was farcical.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on the suspensions, a University of Alabama spokesperson announced that the university would be replacing both magazines with a single general audience magazine set to begin publication in the fall semester of 2026. Gabrielle Gunter, the editor-in-chief of <em>Alice<\/em>, and Leslie Klein, Alice\u2019s managing editor, both expressed their belief that this new planned publication would be unable to adequately replace the lost ones.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the suspension of <em>Alice<\/em> and<em> Nineteen Fifty-Six<\/em> being effective immediately, and the new magazine only launching next year, the administration\u2019s plan would also leave the university without any student run magazines being published in the upcoming spring semester.<\/p>\n<p>The fundraiser launched earlier this week is intended to \u201cpublish print magazines created by the student journalists from <em>Alice<\/em> and <em>Nineteen Fifty-Six<\/em> in spring 2026,\u201d with funds raised to be used to cover students\u2019 pay, printing expenses and possibly office space.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with APR on Tuesday, Victor Luckerson described how the fundraiser came to be and why people from across the state should be concerned about the suspensions of <em>Alice<\/em> and <em>Nineteen Fifty-Six<\/em>. He said that as of that evening, the effort had received donations from over 220 individual donors, \u201cas small as $5 and as large as $500.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A freelance journalist who served as the editor-in-chief of <em>The Crimson White<\/em> between 2010 and 2012, Luckerson is the president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamamasthead.org\/\">MASTHEAD<\/a>, a nonprofit he co-founded in 2020 to help encourage more diversity and better coverage amongst UA student journalists.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shortly after the suspensions were announced last Monday, Luckerson explained, \u201cwe started talking as a board about some strategies, about fundraising. We quickly engaged with Kendal Wright and Gabrielle Gunter, the editors of the two magazines, and we tried to talk to them about whether they were interested in going independent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they talked with their staffs a little bit over the course of last week and found that they had a lot of people on their staff who really wanted to be able to continue writing with the same spirit they have been with their previous publications,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Wright told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thecrimsonwhite.com\/125500\/news\/ua-alumni-nonprofit-launches-fundraising-campaign-to-replace-suspended-magazines\/\">The Crimson White<\/a><\/em> that going independent this spring would provide \u201cinvaluable experience.\u201d Gunter similarly said she, and her fellow staff at <em>Alice<\/em>, were \u201cfired up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about why Alabamians should care that two student magazines have been shut down, Luckerson told APR that \u201cfirst of all, student journalism is real journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents are putting in the same time and effort and manhours that professional journalists do,\u201d Luckerson stated. \u201cI know because I used to be a student journalist and so on that level, it is truly a free speech issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also think we have to really look at what\u2019s going on in UA as an institution right now, and how many opportunities are being cut off,\u201d he added. \u201cWe saw the Black Student Union losing their access to space in recent times, and there\u2019s also been this legal battle over SB129 and how it might be impacting curricula at UA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Free speech organizations have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/12\/05\/free-speech-media-rights-groups-decry-university-of-alabama-magazine-closures\/\">vociferously criticized<\/a> the administration\u2019s decision to shutter <em>Alice<\/em> and <em>Nineteen Fifty-Six<\/em>. Marie McMullan, the student press counsel for the nonprofit FIRE, wrote in a letter to the UA vice president of student life stating that the decision was \u201c\u200aa violation of their clearly established First Amendment rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The senior legal counsel for the Student Press Law Center, Mike Hiestand, similarly stated that \u201cby shutting down only the magazines that primarily serve women and Black students\u2014while leaving other publications alone\u2014it looks a lot like they are targeting a particular point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aI think it\u2019s important for us as alumni and as Alabamians to care about when anyone\u2019s free speech rights are being taken away from them,\u201d Luckerson told APR. \u201c\u200aWe have to support each other in a moment like this.
