Last week, that story came to life as <em>The Lost Chapter: Yuki\u2019s Revenge<\/em>, for the first time inside <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awn.com\/tag\/fortnite\" rel=\"external\">Fortnite<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awn.com\/tag\/epic-games\" rel=\"external\">Epic Games<\/a><\/strong> has pulled back the curtain to show how the team employed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awn.com\/tag\/unreal-engine\" rel=\"external\">Unreal Engine<\/a><\/strong> to make a first of its kind cinematic experience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Tarantino and starring Uma Thurman, <em>The Lost Chapter: Yuki\u2019s Revenge<\/em> used Unreal Engine\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awn.com\/tag\/virtual-production\" rel=\"external\">virtual production<\/a><\/strong> tools to bring his vision to life, letting him direct the actors and see their performances inside Fortnite in real time.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the BTS video <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4aDvaIj\" rel=\"external\">here<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awn.com\/tag\/third-floor\" rel=\"external\">The Third Floor<\/a><\/strong> and Epic Games then merged those performances with stylized animation, using MetaHuman technology to craft the actors\u2019 likenesses. By drawing on Unreal Engine\u2019s MetaHuman technology and virtual production tools, filmmakers were able to experience the immediacy of live-action in a flexible, integrated system.<\/p>\n<p>The team used a high-fidelity MetaHuman facial rig, trained on 4D scans, to achieve more nuanced facial expressions and emotions within Fortnite\u2019s style. Using MetaHuman Animator with standard mono cameras \u2014 webcams and smartphones \u2014 as well as stereo HMC\u2019s, the team captured real-time, high-fidelity animation on set.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"colorbox colorbox-insert-image\" data-colorbox-gallery=\"gallery-all\" href=\"https:\/\/www.awn.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/original\/public\/image\/attached\/1080367-makingofbtsimage05-1280.jpg?itok=bQ2KtW99\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"caption image-inline\" src=\"https:\/\/www.awn.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline\/public\/image\/attached\/1080367-makingofbtsimage05-1280.jpg?itok=NwV-ZhBL\" style=\"height:349px; width:620px\"\/> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>To enhance actor interactivity, the team developed MuzzleReport, a prototype hardware attachment for Airsoft prop guns that detects when shots are fired, and sends those events directly into Unreal Engine. This enabled the team to see real-time muzzle flashes, tracers, and bullet impacts in the virtual scene, giving the actors instantaneous visual and haptic feedback.<\/p>\n<p>The production also incorporated real-time destruction, making it possible for physics-driven breakage and impact effects to play out live in engine during capture.
