And with this year’s selection of best books about travel, we can experience it all simply by turning the pages.

This year’s picks take us through time and place, from the era of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the waters that still hold its stories to the iconic Europe-to-South Asia “Hippie Trail” of the 1970s. We embark on a circumnavigation of the globe at a time without cellphones, accompany a solo female motorcyclist on an epic journey across 25 countries, and set out on a 100-year history of the legendary Route 66. Brimming with practical tips, wondrous history and diverse perspectives, these works of writing deliver the world to us.

On the Hippie Trail by Rick Steves

Most people know guidebook author and travel TV host Rick Steves as one of America’s leading authorities on European travel. However, it was a transformative trip along the “Hippie Trail,” a legendary Europe-to-South Asia overland route popular among counterculture travelers between the mid-1950s and late 1970s, that transformed Steves into the person he is today. Steves’ On the Hippie Trail documents it all, complete with original journal entries and color photos from the 3,500-mile trek. His 1995 book, The Size of the World: Once Around Without Leaving the Ground, chronicles that journey. Now, 30 years later, a new updated anniversary edition serves as a sort-of time capsule to an era before cellphones were ubiquitous, when the internet was just coming into being and when travel itself was a lot more difficult to execute. Greenwald encountered obstacles that tested his physical and mental strength, but he also found ample time for self-reflection. At one point, his laptop, along with all of its journal entries, was stolen on an overnight bus to Nepal. At another, he found himself stranded in the desert in Mauritania.

Along the way, Greenwald sent dispatches back to the States via a dial-up modem, creating one of the very first online travel blogs. Sohini’s debut book, This Beautiful, Ridiculous City, is a love letter to New York, with all of its complexities and contradictions. It’s also a tale about forging a life of your own, despite the obstacles. Through comic-style images and blocks of text, Sohini contrasts her story of growing up in India with that of rebuilding her life in New York City, and she captures a sense of place through her colorful illustrations of food, landmarks and architecture. But it is between the images where her real story comes to life.

How to Win at Travel by Brian Kelly

Dubbed “The Man Who Turned Credit-Card Points Into an Empire” by the New York Times, Brian Kelly is best known as the founder of The Points Guy—a website that specializes in hands-on advice for maximizing travel. Although Kelly sold the site to Bankrate (later acquired by Red Ventures) in 2012, he kept the name as his moniker. Whether you’re a novice traveler or an airline platinum-status frequent flyer, How to Win at Travel can help you travel smarter. There are tips for traveling with kids; leveraging airline, hotel and credit card loyalty programs; dealing with delays and interruptions; and navigating the ins and outs of travel insurance. Kelly also tackles more personal issues, such as conquering your fear of flying and picking the right travel companions. The former IT recruiter breaks down complex topics in a way that’s easy to understand and apply, and in language that’s clear, engaging and straightforward. Travel aside, Kelly says the main goal of his book is for readers to make smarter financial decisions that will benefit them for life.
