<\/figure>\nMatthew Green posted on Facebook<\/a>:<\/p>\n I can now confirm that that I have been selected by South Shropshire Liberal Democrats to stand again in the next general election (probably 2029).<\/p>\n I was very much encouraged to stand again by the response I received from South Shropshire voters in last year\u2019s General Election. In July 2024 despite becoming the candidate at very short notice, the fabulous team around me help produce a stunning 23.4% swing from Conservative to Liberal Democrat, almost regaining the seat. Short by only 1,624 votes.<\/p>\n The next general election, although probably in 2029, already seems likely to be the most important of my lifetime. With the rise of Reform and their politics of division, distrust and dishonesty, the very essence of what the UK stands for is at stake.<\/p>\n In South Shropshire with the continued rapid collapse of the Conservative Party, at the moment it appears the next general election will be between the Liberal Democrats and Reform. We need to help stop the UK descending into a very dark place. This is the strongest motivation for me to stand and win in South Shropshire. I want to be able to look my children in the eye and say I didn\u2019t stand back, and I played my part, to the fullest extent I could, in helping resist the rise of xenophobic populist nationalism in our country.<\/p>\n Many have already contacted me with messages of support and offers of help in order to fight off the threat of Reform in South Shropshire, and I believe it\u2019s our patriotic duty to do so. If you want to help, please comment on this post or message me.<\/p>\n In last year\u2019s general election, the Conservatives\u2019 vote almost halved in South Shropshire, finishing on 34.1%, whilst the LibDem\u2019s share almost doubled to finish on 31.0%. Labour and the Greens received a combined 17.1% between them, they aren\u2019t in the fight here. Since the general election the poll ratings for the Conservatives have fallen further, whilst Reform\u2019s have risen, leaving many pollsters predicting that on current polling the general election in South Shropshire Constituency would be a tight finish between Liberal Democrats and Reform.<\/p>\n It\u2019s going to be a busy three years but I\u2019m confident I\u2019ll still find the time for walking South Shropshire\u2019s beautiful hills, visiting castles and abbeys, and if my knees permit, still playing a game or two of cricket for Much Wenlock.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
