But today\u2019s note is personal.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about a different kind of return\u2026 not just from stocks or bonds, but from a mindset shift that I believe can serve people for a lifetime. One that came full circle this past weekend when my daughter, Isabel, got engaged and drove off in her first \u201cnew\u201d car (a gently used 2024 Ford Escape). As a newly minted TCU graduate about to begin work as a NICU nurse in Fort Worth, Texas, she\u2019s stepping into adulthood with independence, purpose\u2026 and a financial hack I hope will serve her for decades to come.<\/p>\n

Let me back up a bit.<\/p>\n

When Isabel was two, she rode a big wheel around the driveway. Yesterday, she drove off in a real car with her fianc\u00e9 James\u2026 also a TCU grad and former Horned Frog football player, who helped her secure it. But long before either of them knew what an interest rate was, I promised Isabel I\u2019d get her a \u201cnew\u201d car after college graduation.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve planned for this moment for years.<\/p>\n

But instead of buying the car outright and calling it done, I encouraged her to do something that\u2026 in my view, is far more powerful:\u00a0continue making \u201ccar payments\u201d \u2014 but to herself.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Car Payment Hack<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The average car payment in America today is about a whopping\u00a0$736\/month<\/strong>, and most of that money goes toward a depreciating asset that loses 20\u201330% of its value the minute you drive it off the lot! <\/p>\n

Worse, many people cycle through this process every few years \u2014 refinancing, leasing, trading in\u2026basically handing over thousands to banks, credit unions, or dealership financing departments year after year. And at the end of it? Nothing. No equity. No return. No payoff.<\/p>\n

So what if you flipped the script?<\/p>\n

Isabel is now investing\u00a0$300\/month into a low-cost target date fund<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 SWYFX<\/strong><\/a> (Schwab Target 2035 Index Fund) \u2014 and she plans to drive this car for at least\u00a010 years<\/strong>.
