Could you please tell us about your background and connection to the startup world?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hi there, thanks for having me. I have a diploma in Political Economics from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goethe-university-frankfurt.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goethe University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Frankfurt. From 1998 to 2000, I worked on the interaction between weather, climate, and economy at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pik-potsdam.de\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From 2011 to 2017, I worked at the Centre for Entrepreneurship TU Berlin, and I was the head of the Technology Transfer Unit and Programme Director at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tu.berlin\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berlin Institute for Technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>2. Now, you work at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/sen\/wirtschaft\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy, and Public Enterprises<\/a>. Tell us about your mission.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am an \u201cAPI\u201d between administration and the startup world. I am part of the Berlin Startup Unit with the Chamber of Commerce, the Governing Mayor\u2019s office, Investment Bank Berlin, and the Berlin-Partner Business support agency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I coordinate the work on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/startup-map.berlin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Startup Map Berlin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a database that tries to raise transparency in the Berlin Startup ecosystem and helps us create <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/StartupReport23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the ecosystem. Operationally, I\u2019m in charge of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/BerlinStartupAgenda_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berlin Startup Agenda 2022-2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Writing this agenda was a cooperation between public and private players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of my focus goes to impact startups, diversity, talent, enablement, and cooperation. I believe small steps are possible, and with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/sen\/wirtschaft\/en\/business-support\/start-up-funding\/funding-and-financing\/funding\/artikel.819310.en.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berlin Startup Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a grant program for pre-seed founders, even more significant steps are possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>3. What\u2019s going well in the startup ecosystem in Berlin at the moment? What\u2019s the ecosystem lacking?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ecosystem is very welcoming. There are great entry points for any newcomers. It\u2019s an open ecosystem full of tolerance. People are learning from one another, and there are so many sub-ecosystems that are all interconnected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we lack talent, innovation, labs, and investment. Fostering cooperation between KMU, startups, research Institutes, and public administration could further unfold additional potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>4. How do you feel you\u2019re contributing to the startup scene in Berlin?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My biggest strength is bringing people together \u2013 specifically, I\u2019m the entry point into the ecosystem for young teams and teams from abroad. But I try to also be an entry point into the government and administration for any startup idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m both a listener and a translator \u2013 from the state side and vice versa. I provide an overview of the ecosystem at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/startup-map.berlin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Startup Map Berlin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and showcase several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/StartupReport23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">startup reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>5. What do you predict for the startup ecosystem in Berlin in the near future?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact and purpose-driven startups are rising, overcoming the green marketing phase. And Berlin keeps being attractive to young people, which is one of the main drivers for the startup ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m noticing that startups are merging with the SME ecosystem, which will bring more agility and dynamics.
