To protect American lives, America needed to take the fight to the traffickers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the Trump administration designated one of these cartels \u2014 Cartel de los Soles \u2014 a \u201cforeign terrorist organization,\u201d claiming that Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro was the cartel\u2019s de facto leader.<\/p>\n<p><span>The cartel \u201cis headed by Maduro and other high-ranking individuals of the illegitimate Maduro regime who have corrupted Venezuela\u2019s military, intelligence, legislature, and judiciary,\u201d reads a November 16 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2025\/11\/terrorist-designations-of-cartel-de-los-soles\" rel=\"\">statement<\/a><span> from Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But compare that with Trump\u2019s recent defense of his pardon of Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe was the president of the country, and they basically said he was a drug dealer because he was the president of the country,\u201d Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/203781\/donald-trump-pardon-drug-trafficker-honduras\" rel=\"\">told reporters<\/a><span> on Air Force One last week, claiming that the case against Hernandez was a \u201cBiden setup\u201d despite the fact the investigation into Hernandez began before Biden\u2019s tenure as president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>No one in the administration has explained this confounding discrepancy, but there are hints as to why Hernandez is receiving preferential treatment while Maduro \u2014 and the dead and dying people on boats in the ocean \u2014 is not.<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"DigestPostEmbed\" class=\"digestPostEmbed-flwiST\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicnotice.co\/p\/late-trumpism\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-16 pc-reset\">\n<div style=\"width:70px;height:70px;\" class=\"pencraft pc-reset\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!80hs!,w_140,h_140,c_fill,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep,g_auto\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8e6b1969-3802-4ec3-824a-97e13c2ef5b5_4278x2852.jpeg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!80hs!,w_140,h_140,c_fill,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep,g_auto\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8e6b1969-3802-4ec3-824a-97e13c2ef5b5_4278x2852.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" alt=\"Republicans in the era of Late Trumpism\" width=\"140\" height=\"140\" class=\"img-OACg1c smSquare-NGbPBa pencraft pc-reset\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-flex pc-flexDirection-column pc-reset\">\n<h4 class=\"pencraft pc-reset color-pub-primary-text-NyXPlw line-height-24-jnGwiv font-display-nhmvtD size-20-P_cSRT weight-bold-DmI9lw reset-IxiVJZ\">Republicans in the era of Late Trumpism<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The reasons have less to do with American lives lost to drugs and more to do with US foreign policy and the business interests of tech titans \u2014 the exact type of neoconservative interventionism that Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica first\u201d supporters, including his vice president, have said they want nothing to do with.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps worse, Trump\u2019s hypocritical pardon of Hernandez and the deadly strikes could simply be more evidence of an administration that is being run by whomever has Trump\u2019s ear at a given moment as he slips further into senility and irrelevance.<\/p>\n<p data-attrs=\"{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.publicnotice.co\/subscribe&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;\ud83d\udee5\ufe0f Subscribe to PN \ud83d\udee5\ufe0f&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:&quot;button-wrapper&quot;}\" data-component-name=\"ButtonCreateButton\" class=\"button-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicnotice.co\/subscribe\" rel=\"\" class=\"button primary button-wrapper\"><span>\ud83d\udee5\ufe0f Subscribe to PN \ud83d\udee5\ufe0f<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration claims its strikes against drug boats from South America protect Americans \u2014 despite the fact that most drug overdoses are caused by fentanyl, which largely comes from China. But they\u2019ve coincided with a military buildup in the region that\u2019s aimed at regime change in Venezuela. <\/p>\n<p>The administration blames Maduro, who refused to step down after losing last year\u2019s presidential election and has overseen a devastating economic collapse in the country, for a flood of undocumented immigrants into the US. Trump\u2019s ulterior motive \u2014 showing off US military prowess in Maduro\u2019s territory as the administration pushes for regime change there \u2014 is clear, even while the reasoning behind the Hernandez pardon is murky. But there are clues as to what\u2019s really going on here.<\/p>\n<p><span>Longtime Trump associate and right-wing operative Roger Stone personally lobbied for Hernandez\u2019s release \u2014 free of charge, Stone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/02\/us\/politics\/hernandez-honduras-trump.html\" rel=\"\">claims<\/a><span>. Meanwhile, former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale has been working for the campaign of Nasry Asfura, the right-wing candidate for the Honduran presidency who is from the same political party as Hernandez. Trump endorsed Asfura in the election, whose results have not been finalized and are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/honduras-election-swings-again-conservative-asfura-takes-slim-lead-2025-12-04\/\" rel=\"\">being contested by Asfura\u2019s opponent<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible that Trump pardoned Hernandez as a sign of support for right-wing candidates like Hernandez and Asfura \u2014 and as retaliation against Honduran President Xiomara Castro, a leftist and Trump critic. In fact, Stone suggested this very tactic early this year.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA well-timed pardon of former President Hernandez by President Trump could be the final death blow to Castro with national elections set to take place later this year,\u201d Stone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonecoldtruth.com\/p\/how-president-trump-can-crush-socialism\" rel=\"\">wrote in January<\/a><span>. Back then, there was no favorite to win the presidential election in Honduras, but Castro backed a leftist who would have continued pushing Honduras toward a more socialist government. Prosp\u00e9ra is a so-called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jennycohn1\/status\/1995313313098645971\" rel=\"\">network state<\/a><span>\u201d funded by Trump-backing tech and finance figures Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, and Sam Altman. The city is billed by Stone and others as a haven for experimental libertarian government, with an emphasis on digital currency and biotech innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no plausible explanation for pardoning Hernandez that has anything to do with saving American lives. There is, however, an explanation for doing so based on the desire to secure cooperative leadership in Honduras, a country whose population represents a significant number of asylum claims and immigrants flowing into the US.<\/p>\n<p data-attrs=\"{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.publicnotice.co\/subscribe&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;\ud83d\udee5\ufe0f Subscribe to PN \ud83d\udee5\ufe0f&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:&quot;button-wrapper&quot;}\" data-component-name=\"ButtonCreateButton\" class=\"button-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicnotice.co\/subscribe\" rel=\"\" class=\"button primary button-wrapper\"><span>\ud83d\udee5\ufe0f Subscribe to PN \ud83d\udee5\ufe0f<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Protecting Americans from drugs has been at the center of the administration\u2019s case for the strikes being carried out by the US military, which have resulted in the killing of dozens of what appear to be low-level smugglers \u2014 or, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/13\/world\/americas\/trump-drug-boat-strikes-colombian-fisherman.html\" rel=\"\">reported<\/a><span> by the New York Times, Venezuelan fishermen. But the Hernandez pardon contradicts the rationale for the strikes, putting Republicans in a spot where they struggle to explain what Trump is doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you square that for us as you were talking about this objective of fighting this scourge of drugs?\u201d Rep. Derrick Van Orden, a vocal Trump backer, was asked about the Hernandez pardon on CNN last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, I don\u2019t know the specific details of this case and what happened, but I\u2019m a firm believer, if you are selling drugs or smuggling drugs into the United States you need to pay a very, very heavy price,\u201d Van Orden said. \u201cAnd my primary concern, and I will never apologize for it, is protecting American citizens and I know that Donald Trump is doing that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"bluesky-3m6zt3gyo6z26\" data-bluesky-id=\"2797917891296515\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.bsky.app\/embed\/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3m6zt3gyo6z26?id=2797917891296515\" width=\"100%\" style=\"display: block; flex-grow: 1;\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Republicans have also begun to break with Trump on the strikes themselves. Rep. Mike Turner noted on Thursday that the alleged crime being committed by the targets of the strikes \u2014 smuggling drugs \u2014 is not punishable by death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis activity that\u2019s happening in the Caribbean where they are hitting these boats \u2014 these individuals, if they were captured and tried and convicted, they would be guilty of criminal activity for which they\u2019re not subject to capital punishment,\u201d Turner said. \u201cThese people are being killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"bluesky-3m767n72fid2j\" data-bluesky-id=\"11297361978501574\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.bsky.app\/embed\/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3m767n72fid2j?id=11297361978501574\" width=\"100%\" style=\"display: block; flex-grow: 1;\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span>Questions about the strikes have become only more pointed as Democrats have described the disturbing details of the strike on September 2. After the first missiles split the boat in half and killed nine people, two men clung to the wreckage, \u201cmoments from slipping under the waves,\u201d Rep. The military then killed the survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The deadly strikes are in line, however, with Trump\u2019s longtime demand for the death penalty for drug dealers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"youtube2-wtgegU5vp64\" data-attrs=\"{&quot;videoId&quot;:&quot;wtgegU5vp64&quot;,&quot;startTime&quot;:null,&quot;endTime&quot;:null}\" data-component-name=\"Youtube2ToDOM\" class=\"youtube-wrap\">\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/wtgegU5vp64?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0\" frameborder=\"0\" loading=\"lazy\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowautoplay=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"728\" height=\"409\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>For years, Trump has claimed without evidence that an individual drug dealer is responsible for the deaths of as many as 5,000 people in their lifetime. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/11\/14\/debunked-claims-faux-facts-supporting-trumps-plan-execute-drug-dealers\/\" rel=\"\">No one knows<\/a><span> where the claim came from, and Trump nor anyone around him have ever explained its origin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trump hast claimed the ongoing strikes are saving even more Americans than his previous, un-cited, estimates.<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"bluesky-3m3srorp7af2g\" data-bluesky-id=\"08747950810103067\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.bsky.app\/embed\/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3m3srorp7af2g?id=08747950810103067\" width=\"100%\" style=\"display: block; flex-grow: 1;\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery boat we knock out we save 25,000 American lives,\u201d Trump said during last week\u2019s cabinet meeting. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem went even further during the same event.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou have saved hundreds of millions of lives with the cocaine you\u2019ve blown up in the Caribbean,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JustinWolfers\/status\/1996419862332399887\" rel=\"\">Noem claimed<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2023, the most recent year for which data is available, the Centers for Disease Control <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/trends-statistics\/overdose-death-rates#Fig2\" rel=\"\">reported 105,007 drug overdose deaths<\/a><span> in the US. About 70 percent of those deaths were caused by opioids, primarily fentanyl. Overdose deaths attributed to cocaine numbered 29,449.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The decision to pardon Hernandez has been nearly as inexplicable as the origin of Trump\u2019s claims about drug dealers killing 500 people a piece. It seems like there\u2019s a lot of inexplicable things these days.<\/p>\n<p>As the collection of authoritarian grifters and neoconservative leftovers take to television and social media each day to sell their various cons and schemes to the public, Trump appears more and more to be a passive actor, watching as the people around him run his administration as they please.<\/p>\n<p>This has resulted in erratic and contradictory policies, such siding with Russia in its war against Ukraine because Trump likes Putin but at the same time insisting on regime change in Venezuela. Similarly, the Trump administration has drastically reduced foreign aid but bailed out Argentina to the tune of $20 billion in American tax dollars. Who asked for all this?
