Oh so tired.<\/span><\/p>\n

If there is an award for \u201cnon-employee
\nstaying at a Five Guys restaurant for the longest period of time\u201d I most
\ncertainly won it today.\u00a0 <\/span>I was at Five
\nGuys from 1:55 pm to 8:20 pm.\u00a0 <\/span>Whew!!<\/span><\/p>\n

But what a grand event it
\nturned out to be! \u00a0<\/span>A neighbor who works
\nwith Five Guys corporate reached out a couple of months ago and asked if Kindness
\nActivist would like to hold a fundraising event at the new restaurant in
\nArlington.\u00a0 <\/span>It is a historic location
\nbecause they built it in the same location as the very first ever Five
\nGuys.\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, we said YES to a
\nfundraiser.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, we love finding
\ncreative ways to raise money to spread kindness, and who doesn\u2019t love Five Guys
\nfood??\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I have seen schools and
\nsports clubs advertise these events at restaurants but had no idea how it
\nworked.\u00a0 <\/span>I asked lots of questions \u2013
\ncould I bring cake to share with guests, what times could it be, how did the
\npercentage split work, would take-out orders count\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>We set a date for a Sunday afternoon in September,
\nthen the store emailed to apologize and explain that they learned the events
\nhad to be during the week.\u00a0 <\/span>We chose a
\ndate (September 25) and the hours stayed the same as we had arranged for the
\nweekend date \u2013 2:00 pm \u2013 6:00 pm.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the event grew closer,
\nI realized the times were not ideal\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>It
\nwas a THURSDAY, and most people would be at work during those times (or
\ncommuting).\u00a0 <\/span>Oops.\u00a0 <\/span>But I had asked so many questions already\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>I decided to just go with the flow, not rock
\nthe boat, and test it all out so I could better understand the whole concept.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today I put on my Kind is
\nCool shirt and packed a roller bag of things to do.\u00a0 <\/span>I told David, \u201cI don\u2019t think there will be
\nmany people.\u00a0 <\/span>I am looking at this event
\nas a day to learn the ropes, and to have 4 hours of free time<\/i> to sit and
\nget things done!!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only, I was wrong.\u00a0 <\/span>Oh so wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first person must\u2019ve
\nwalked in around 2:10. \u00a0<\/span>I saw her even
\nbefore she came in the door.\u00a0 <\/span>She peeked
\ninside, changed her mind, and started walking away.\u00a0 <\/span>But something made her turn back\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

I thought I may have
\nrecognized her as a pantry guest.\u00a0 <\/span>I gave
\nher a big smile, which she returned.\u00a0 <\/span>We exchanged
\npleasantries about how lovely the weather was and she made her way over to my
\ntable and sat down.\u00a0 <\/span>I realized I did not
\nknow her \u2013 but I would soon.\u00a0 <\/span>We talked
\nfor a good 20 minutes.\u00a0 <\/span>She told me
\nseveral sweet stories.\u00a0 <\/span>As we talked, I folded
\ncolorful sheets of paper I had brought. I planned to make LOTS of Daily Polls
\nfor our street corner today.\u00a0 <\/span>I thought
\nthat would be a fantastic use of time \u2013 getting ahead on that task.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I think I finally asked
\nher what she planned to eat.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI haven\u2019t
\nhad any food since breakfast!\u201d she declared.\u00a0
\n<\/span>\u201cDo you serve turkey burgers??\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahhh \u2013 she thought I worked
\nthere<\/u>!\u00a0 <\/span>It was quite funny.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI thought you were folding menus or something,\u201d
\nshe said.\u00a0 <\/span>I invited her to come sit back
\ndown as they prepared her meal and we continued our conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the first \u201cofficial\u201d
\nguest came, a very sweet neighbor.\u00a0 <\/span>She joined
\nmy new friend and I at the table.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I can confidently say \u2013
\nthere was not a moment of \u201csilence\u201d or slow time after that.\u00a0 <\/span>There was a steady stream of people \u2013 far more
\nthan I imagined.\u00a0 <\/span>It was fun seeing so
\nmany neighbors!\u00a0 <\/span>I got to talk to many,
\nmany people.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Two people who wanted to
\nattend but couldn\u2019t sent donations.\u00a0 <\/span>They
\nasked us to use the money to treat someone to a meal.\u00a0 <\/span>Challenge accepted!!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

At first, we thought we
\nshould use it to buy food for people experiencing homelessness.\u00a0 <\/span>Only, there didn\u2019t appear to be anyone in
\nthat situation around the restaurant at that time\u2026\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Then we thought treating
\nsomeone at the bus stop would be great \u2013 but if you were waiting for a bus, you
\nmight not want to go inside to order a meal\u2026\u00a0
\n<\/span>You might miss your bus!\u00a0 <\/span>We considered
\nbuying meals and walking down the street a bit to give them to people
\nexperiencing homelessness in another area where we felt they would certainly
\nbe.\u00a0 <\/span>But really \u2013 half the fun of eating
\nout is getting to pick what you want to eat, right??\u00a0 <\/span>It didn\u2019t feel \u201cright\u201d for us to choose and
\njust drop the food off.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

So, we got the great idea
\nto offer meals to people getting OFF the bus.\u00a0
\n<\/span>An intrepid crew of 3 kids and 1 adult went out to choose the first
\nperson!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take long for them
\nto walk back in.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe found someone!!\u201d
\nthey said.\u00a0 <\/span>And sure enough they
\nhad.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a woman who looked like she
\nwas probably coming home from a day in the office.\u00a0 <\/span>She was delighted to be treated to a tasty
\nmeal!!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

As we waited for her
\ndinner to be prepared we chatted about Kindness Activist and the work that we
\ndo.\u00a0 <\/span>She was very interested and hopes to
\nget involved in future events.\u00a0 <\/span>She asked
\nif she could take a selfie, because she wanted to post about her wild
\nexperience of getting off the bus and being surprised and delighted by
\nkindness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next up was 2 young men.\u00a0 <\/span>They were a bit confused about what was
\nhappening \u2013 why was Five Guys giving them free food?\u00a0 <\/span>We explained the fundraiser, and the generous
\ndonors who wanted to buy strangers meals.\u00a0
\n<\/span>They both ordered very carefully, not wanting to spend too much of the
\nmoney.\u00a0 <\/span>It was very sweet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next up was another
\nwoman.\u00a0 <\/span>She was so happy!!\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIs it my BIRTHDAY???\u201d she asked
\nincredulously.\u00a0 <\/span>Nooo \u2013 but it is<\/i>
\nyour lucky day!\u00a0 <\/span>That meal used up the
\ndonated funds and so we thought we were done with spreading kindness (while at
\na kindness fundraising event!).\u00a0 <\/span>But we
\nwere wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Because I looked out the
\nwindow and saw a man who looked exactly like the \u201ctarget audience\u201d that we had thought
\nwe wanted.\u00a0 <\/span>He was smiling in the sunshine.\u00a0 <\/span>He may have not had shelter.\u00a0 <\/span>And he looked hungry.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I rushed outside before he
\ncould leave and asked, \u201cHey \u2013 would you like a hamburger and fries??\u00a0 <\/span>They are really tasty\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>He gave me a big smile and said yes, yes he
\nwould.\u00a0 <\/span>So, in we went.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The line was a bit long at
\nthat point and I told him it would be a few minutes before his turn.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMind if I sit here while I wait?\u201d he
\nasked.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cSure.\u00a0 <\/span>I will hold the place in line,\u201d I told him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And he sat right down on a
\nseat.\u00a0 <\/span>A seat in that clean, air
\nconditioned, nice restaurant.\u00a0 <\/span>A seat that
\nhe probably usually would not be allowed to take.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Moments like that humble
\nme and make me consider my privilege.\u00a0 <\/span>I can
\npretty much walk into any establishment I like, order something \u2013 anything,
\nmaybe just a soda or cup of coffee.\u00a0 <\/span>I can
\ncool off.\u00a0 <\/span>Use the wifi.\u00a0 <\/span>Go to the bathroom\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I can<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>But many cannot.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

As he sat and rested, he
\ncalled me over.\u00a0 <\/span>He had been studying the
\nmenu.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cDo you think I could get a BLT
\ninstead?\u201d he asked.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYes sir, a BLT
\nsounds delicious!\u00a0 <\/span>What to drink?\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>He said he didn\u2019t want a drink.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNo drink???\u201d I asked.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHey, how about a SHAKE??\u201d I offered.\u00a0 <\/span>Ahhh – now a shake got his attention.\u00a0 <\/span>He examined the shake menu and decided
\nvanilla was in order.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWant whipped
\ncream on that?\u201d I asked with a grin.\u00a0 <\/span>He flashed
\na mischievous grin and declared, \u201cWhy yes!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

When it was almost my turn
\nto place his order, a neighbor came up and handed me a $20 bill.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cFor his food,\u201d she told me.\u00a0 <\/span>No \u2013 I explained that we would buy it with
\nkindness funds.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNo, no, I want to\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Kindness begets kindness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

When the man\u2019s food was
\nready he picked it up and headed out.\u00a0 <\/span>I was
\nin another conversation at the time so didn\u2019t get to say goodbye.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Another neighbor and her 2
\ndaughters came in a bit later and as I greeted them I explained that man
\noutdoors had just been treated to a delicious meal thanks to someone\u2019s
\ngenerosity.\u00a0 <\/span>The woman teared up.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter\u2026\u201d she said,
\npointing to her young girl.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMy daughter\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>We saw<\/i> that man outside, and my daughter
\nasked if we could buy him some food. \u00a0<\/span>But
\nit is so hard.\u00a0 <\/span>You know, to kind of
\nassume someone\u2019s situation and that they need food\u2026\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>She wiped away tears.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

What a beautiful
\nconnection.\u00a0 <\/span>And such a true
\nsentiment.\u00a0 <\/span>It is difficult to find a way
\nto ask that won\u2019t be offensive or belittling.\u00a0
\n<\/span>And sometimes the ask is not accepted.\u00a0
\n<\/span>In fact, that happened today.\u00a0 <\/span>One
\nbeautiful neighbor asked someone who looked hungry if she would like a free
\nmeal, and the person declined.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s
\nawkward when that happens, but that can\u2019t stop us from being open and kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Another person cried
\ntoday, too.\u00a0 <\/span>Who would\u2019ve thought that an
\nafternoon in a burger joint would bring tears, but it did.\u00a0 <\/span>A neighbor was standing looking at the menu
\nand I greeted her and asked how she was.\u00a0
\n<\/span>At first, she gave the usual, pat answer of being fine.\u00a0 <\/span>Then she confessed that actually she wasn\u2019t
\nfine.\u00a0 <\/span>That it had been a very hard
\nday.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHey, I had that kind of a day just
\nyesterday,\u201d I told her.\u00a0 <\/span>I don\u2019t know her
\nwell enough to know if she is the hugging type, but I couldn\u2019t help
\nmyself.\u00a0 <\/span>And as we hugged, I felt her
\ncry.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Some days are hard.\u00a0 <\/span>Hugs are good medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

All afternoon people came
\nand went.\u00a0 <\/span>They chatted.\u00a0 <\/span>Some drew pictures for the Five Guys bulletin
\nboard.\u00a0 <\/span>Some gave suggestions on how we
\ncould use the funds raised.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neighbors met neighbors.\u00a0 <\/span>They sat at tables and dined together.\u00a0 <\/span>They told life stories.\u00a0 <\/span>They shared the experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I thought it would be
\nquiet.\u00a0 <\/span>I thought I would \u201cget things
\ndone\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And I did get things
\ndone.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Not the things I packed
\ninto my little bag.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

But the things that NEEDED
\nto be done.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Laughing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Listening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Giggling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hugging.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caring.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Serving.<\/span><\/p>\n

And being kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of kind, the
\nrestaurant extended the event an additional hour.\u00a0 <\/span>I am not sure when we will find out how much
\nmoney we raised.\u00a0 <\/span>But I know one thing \u2013
\nhowever much it is, it is enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because the kindness shown
\ntoday was incredible.\u00a0 <\/span>People being
\npatient with lines.\u00a0 <\/span>Being patient with
\nnew restaurant employees.\u00a0 <\/span>Being open and
\nbrave enough to sit with strangers and talk.\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And people showing up<\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>Supporting this little thing called Kindness
\nActivist.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The work continues.\u00a0 <\/span>I came home to find a box of pantry donations
\non the porch, and the Amazon person delivered 5 more as I sat on the porch to
\nwrite this story.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The boxes can wait until
\nmorning.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Tonight – I will rest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And think about the beauty
\nof a community coming together for kindness.\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And burgers.<\/span><\/p>\n
