In 1971, Love It To Death<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>the 3rd\u00a0Alice Cooper LP, was released. Many things transpired between the band\u2019s time with Frank Zappa and the release of their first two LPs. While grateful for the exposure, they knew that if they were going to make it, something more was needed\u2026 enter Bob Ezrin.<\/p>\n

Ezrin worked with the band to create what would inevitably become a unique \u201cAlice Cooper\u201d sound. In turn, Love It To Death <\/em>became quintessential Alice Cooper. Even the album cover tells a story, perhaps without the listener noticing. Much of who and what Alice Cooper is stems from that LP.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea, as it struck us, was black and white. That\u2019s why the front of the album is dark, and the back is light. We had songs like\u2026 the white part of it would be songs like \u201cCaught In A Dream,\u201d it\u2019s an uplifting song \u2013 it\u2019s not a dark character song. But we also had \u201cBlack Juju,\u201d so the set was like that. It started out bright, and then it got very dark, shifted gears after about four rockers, then it shifted gears and got very moody and very dark, and then it became uplifting at the end after Alice got killed (laughs).\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Dennis Dunaway (founding member and bassist, Alice Cooper)<\/p>\n

Love It To Death <\/em>opens with Michael Bruce\u2019s \u201cCaught In A Dream<\/a>.\u201d The song is uplifting and light-hearted, as Dunaway suggests. The song is a narration of a \u201cDream\u201d \u2013 The American Dream: the chase, the glory, and the deception unfolding line after line.<\/p>\n

Well, I\u2019m runnin\u2019 through the world
with a gun in my back<\/em><\/strong>
tryin\u2019 to catch a ride in a Cadillac
Thought that I was livin\u2019
but you can\u2019t really tell<\/strong>
been tryin\u2019 to get a whiff of that success smell<\/em><\/p>\n

You know I need a houseboat, and I need a plane
I need a butler and a trip to Spain
I need everything
the world owes me
I tell that to myself
and I agree<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m caught in a dream
So What!<\/em><\/strong>
You don\u2019t know what I\u2019m goin\u2019 through<\/strong>
I\u2019m right in between
So I\u2019ll
I\u2019ll just play along with you<\/em><\/p>\n

The song and lyrics seem jovial and celebratory, but underneath that, there\u2019s a hint of poignant reflection. It\u2019s almost as if to say the song\u2019s subject is hesitant about what they\u2019re doing or where they\u2019re going. Yet, they remain driven by the \u201cwhiff of that success smell.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The truth is, the world owes us nothing, and if the world is offering us something, you can bet there\u2019s an extra price to pay \u2013 a tax, a fee, or a penalty. Is it worth the cost?<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.<\/em> 16\u00a0For everything in the world\u2014the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life\u2014comes not from the Father but from the world. 17\u00a0The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 <\/em>1 John 2:15-17<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the surface, it may seem as if we aren\u2019t meant to enjoy <\/em>this life or partake in nice <\/em>things, but is that really what these verses are saying? It seems the enemy\u2019s primary goals are distraction and deception \u2013 detours to keep us from focusing on God and His Love.<\/p>\n

Notice the three things John lists in those verses and what they represent:<\/p>\n

The lust of the flesh<\/em> \u2013 the preoccupation with physical desires
The lust of the eyes <\/em>\u2013 the craving and accumulation of things \u2013 materialism
The pride of life <\/em>\u2013 an obsession with status and importance<\/p>\n

While the enemy may be crafty, he\u2019s not very original. The same lies have been used to entice humanity for thousands of years. In fact, he used the same tactics to try to tempt Christ as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.<\/em> 2\u00a0After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. 3\u00a0The tempter came to him and said, \u201cIf you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

4\u00a0Jesus answered, <\/em>\u201cIt is written: \u2018Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

5\u00a0Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.<\/em> 6\u00a0\u201cIf you are the Son of God,\u201d he said, \u201cthrow yourself down.\u201d For it is written:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018He will command his angels concerning you,<\/em>
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

7\u00a0Jesus answered him, <\/em>\u201cIt is also written: \u2018Do not put the Lord your God to the test.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

8\u00a0Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.<\/em> 9\u00a0\u201cAll this I will give you,\u201d he said, \u201cif you will bow down and worship me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

10\u00a0Jesus said to him, <\/em>\u201cAway from me, Satan! For it is written: \u2018Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

11\u00a0Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Matthew 4:1-11<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let us notice these temptations in the above-listed verses.<\/p>\n

The enemy focused on needs \u2013 food, security, protection, significance, and achievement. These things are not inherently wrong or evil. The condition of the heart and mind while pursuing them is what matters.<\/p>\n

For instance, some of God\u2019s chosen were wealthy individuals. Here is a brief list of examples:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Abraham was rich in gold, silver, and cattle (Gen. 13:2<\/strong>)
\u2013 Isaac\u2019s wealth remained even through uncertainty (Gen. 26:17-32<\/strong>)
\u2013 Joseph became second in command of Egypt (Gen. 47<\/strong>)
\u2013 David enjoyed a life of prosperity, wealth, and honor (1 Chron. 29:28<\/strong>)
\u2013 Solomon was so rich in gold that silver had no value (2 Chron. 9:20<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

Their wealth didn\u2019t prevent them from knowing God and being accepted by Him. While each of these men struggled and failed on several occasions, it was their state of heart and willingness to serve God that defined them.<\/p>\n

The same is true for each of us. We must ask ourselves what we are pursuing most \u2013 God or earthly prosperity?<\/p>\n

Our journey will NOT be perfect, and we will most assuredly slip up and face trials and troubles along the way. However, seeking God and surrendering to Him are essential in our daily walks.<\/p>\n

The bottom line is this: are we \u201ccaught in a dream?\u201d Are we living lives focused on gaining everything this world has to offer? Even if that means losing our souls? Or are we focused on God\u2019s Word and His will?<\/p>\n

Wrapping up this week\u2019s post, it seems \u201cCaught In A Dream\u201d defines life \u2013 not just the life of an aspiring Rock Star but life in general. It perfectly lays out the desire to live life to its fullest, but also comes with a warning.<\/p>\n

The line \u201cwhat I thought was heaven turned out to be hell\u201d carries a \u201cbe careful what you wish for\u201d <\/em>connotation. As if to say, \u201cdon\u2019t let the dream become a Nightmare\u201d \u2013 <\/em>an all too familiar Alice Cooper scenario.<\/p>\n

Life is a journey. As we chase our dreams, aspirations, and passions, we must also ask ourselves about our motives and hearts. What is it that drives us?<\/p>\n

Is it an earthly ambition, or is it spiritual direction from our Creator? Both carry significance, yet only one comes with eternal purpose and meaning. We must choose wisely.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, Love It To Death <\/em>is iconic. What would the world of Rock look like without this LP? Honestly, it would be pretty dull. Alice and the crew brought something exciting to the stage and combined that with incredible musical talent.<\/p>\n

The product of their genius and madness forever changed the scope and direction of music. Before long, most musicians discovered the audience doesn\u2019t just want a concert \u2013 they want a show!<\/p>\n

Alice Cooper continues to deliver just that \u2013 the show. A mixture of theater and Rock \u2013 a dream and a nightmare. A combination of the things that scare us and the things that bring us joy. A narrative of good and evil \u2013 the story of life.<\/p>\n

On this journey, may we all choose wisely. May we all find a way to interlace our dreams with His Will \u2013 seeking to find and serve Him with our hearts and minds.<\/p>\n
