Pantone has announced the official color of the year for 2026: a shade of white called \u201cCloud Dancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also known as Pantone 11-4201, Cloud Dancer is \u201ca billowy white imbued with a feeling of serenity,\u201d according to a statement<\/a> from the company. The announcement features photos of a dancing woman wearing loose white clothing against a backdrop of puffy clouds.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cacophony that surrounds us has become overwhelming, making it harder to hear the voices of our inner selves,\u201d says Leatrice Eiseman<\/a>, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute<\/a>, in the statement. \u201cA conscious statement of simplification, Cloud Dancer enhances our focus, providing release from the distraction of external influences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company makes its selection by considering trends in the entertainment industry, travel, art, fashion, design, technology and social media, according to the company\u2019s website<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Pantone Color Institute has been announcing a color of the year since 1999, when it declared a muted blue called \u201cCerulean<\/a>\u201d as the hue of 2000. Its pick for 2025 was a light brown dubbed \u201cMocha Mousse<\/a>,\u201d the first shade of brown to receive the title. Cloud Dancer is Pantone\u2019s first white color of the year. \u201cThe closest they came before was \u2018Sand Dollar,\u2019 the color of the year for 2006, which was more beige,\u201d says the New York Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Vanessa Friedman in a conversation with fellow journalists.<\/p>\n

With its color of the year, Pantone aims to forecast design trends. Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said in 2022<\/a> that the color of the year \u201cis a color we see crossing all areas of design; a color that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude on the part of the consumers.\u201d This year, according to the company, consumers aspire to \u201ca future free from excess\u201d and desire \u201cfeelings of peace, unity and cohesiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pantone\u2019s latest selection has elicited a range of reactions. \u201cThis says a lot about the state of the world, how boring,\u201d commented one Instagram user on Pantone\u2019s announcement<\/a>. Another wrote, \u201cThe color of the year being colorless is a recession indicator.\u201d<\/p>\n

White is an enigmatic hue. White light is made of all colors<\/a> on the visible light spectrum, but no other pigments can be mixed to make it. Pantone compares Cloud Dancer to a \u201cblank canvas,\u201d signifying \u201cour desire for a fresh start.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a structural color that goes well with anything and everything,\u201d Pressman tells the Washington Post<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Rachel Kurzius. \u201cWhether you are including it with bright colors, whether you are including it with pastels, it works.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pantone has partnered with several other brands to create products that use Cloud Dancer. Consumers can now purchase Cloud Dancer Post-its<\/a>, Command hooks<\/a>, Play-Doh<\/a> and sofas<\/a>\u2014products that were all<\/a> previously<\/a> available<\/a> in<\/a> white.<\/p>\n

But officials at Pantone insist that the specific shade of white is important. Cloud Dancer has an \u201cequal balance of cool and warm undertones,\u201d Pressman tells CNN<\/a>\u2019s Issy Ronald. \u201cHad we gone for a white that was more optically bright, not only does it take away from the natural feeling and honesty and authenticity that we\u2019re looking for \u2026 it almost speaks to sterility and isolationism, because it\u2019s cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across different cultures, the color white has been connected with a variety of meanings<\/a>. \u201cThere are so many associations with white: the white dove of peace, the baptismal gown, the wedding dress, the white T-shirt,\u201d Friedman says in the Times<\/em>. \u201cIn some Asian countries, mourning. \u2026 So not really that blank at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
